An AI that is designed to be fun seems to be one of the biggest hurdles in RTS games. Having an AI that just cheats with resources and/or map awareness, or one that has an APM of a Korean StarCraft player may be a way to make the game more challenging for MP sweaties, but it is nothing compared to an AI that can be tailored to be defensive, aggressive, flanky, reckless, etc.

The AI in the wargame series has full map vision, double your income, even when it holds no sectors in destruction, and no limit on the orders it gives per second, and I still regularly beat it with four to one points lost ratio in skirmish, despite being kinda shit at the game, because it doesnt follow even the most basic of tactical wisdom. If they bothered to have the AI not rush its units across exposed aightlines with fastmove all the time, to not have it leave its high value unots sitting in open fields awaiting airstrikes and artillery, if they had it know wben to retreat to a more adventageous position, and cover that retreat with smole and artillery, if they had it leave some security units in its spawn, if they had it occasionally flank with motorized units or airborne special forces, if they had it set up its ATGMs and heavy tanks in commanding concealed positions with good fields of fire, if they had it keep a reserve force it can use to reapond if you break through its line, if they did even a fraction of these things, it would be a lot more challanging to fight. But that would actually require dynamic heatmaps of the game, asessing enemy force disposition, viable cover and likely avenues of attack. Instead all the AI seems to rely on is where roads, towns and forests are, and using the former to rush units into the latter that counter what the player has spawned, that the AI knows not through its scouts, but magically and automatically. Its in truth just very fucking lazy.

@@egoalter1276 Exactly this. As soon as you know how to farm the AI in WarGame, it loses it's challenge entirely. I mean, they don't even have randomised maps so that's one less excuse for an AI that at least imitates thoughtful defensive positions and offensive pushes, by having it prioritise certain terrain features and giving it a protocol to sweep an sector for command vehicles. Eugen games have the worst AI for an RTS I have ever seen, and actually putting some effort into an AI might be challenging but it would be worth it, even if it only really works well up to a certain player count limit like up to 4v4 as an example. This would eliminate the need to map awareness and resource cheats, at least on "medium" and lower difficulties.

For me it's pretty much the fact that the Eugen games don't have proper singleplayer campaigns, that keeps them pretty low on my priority list. I just don't have the time to get into the multiplayer, and I suspect I'm not the only one. Hopefully, the Total War style singleplayer will turn out worthwhile. Also, "Warno" might be one of the least sexy titles ever.

Road Map looks promising, but early access launch should have been 2 weeks or so later with a bit more content, more QoL working etc. and yeah lack of a tutorial is rough. And yeah their outreach to CCs was super limited for that. Here is hoping that they will improve on that on full launch (planned in 6-8 month).

They need a proper community manager to maximize engagement and expand the audience. They also need more QoL improvements to help people ease into the complex nature. People aren't used to clicking a unit to move, then it taking 30 secs to get there. It's a slower pace.

Just found out about this game yesterday. Think i'll give it a try. Just not sure it's as addictive as Ruse for the long term. Maybe if they keep pumping out new content it could grow. "yeah so actually we're gonna make you like, a captain or colonel in a unit and you'll be given the option of some random stuff" huge part of the appeal of wargame was that I could basically make my own unit to mess up the enemy with. it was really unique and weird.

MW-1, sure, but we already had that in a mod. and it was cool. I added aircraft carriers in a sense a couple times, and that was REALLY funny. The kuznetsov even had a damaged version and would sink. it looked awesome. But nothing that funky is gonna happen in WARNO. I don't think Wargame can live in the cold war forever. My biggest gripe with Eugen's RTSs is I feel it is micro heavy. I like to position my troops and let them be a bit while I deal with other stuff, but this won't work as the units won't do much on there own, and get annihilated, especially in multiplayer. I don't like having to actively manage the troops to have even a remote chance of success, so I tend to play games with very low income settings and LCD (limited combat deck), otherwise I can't keep up with the amount of things to do.

I feel like Eugene Systems is making the guitar hero mistake in over saturating their audience with these niche title release (DJ hero anyone?). But if they focus their efforts one hammering down one engine, with one game play mechanic and make it modable and nurture the modding community that many other games that are far older yet still played, their releases would have more longevity to them. For example, if there was a campaign editor for Air Land Battle that lets you open up the wider European Landmass rather than just being locked to Scandinavia, or likewise Red Dragon that only has campaigns with chopped up sections of the eastern Asian coast, I for one would be spending hours building campaigns like that, not to mention modeling and texturing my units to push the era back to the 50's or forward to the 2020's.

This video made me realise Eugen, God bless them, might just horrible at marketing their games. I'd no idea there was a overworld map "Total War WW2" mode in Steel Division 2, so this video about why no one's playing Warno might have induced me to buy SD2 whilst it's on sale, ironically enough. I, personally, hope Warno takes it easy on the DLCs. I don't think devs and publishers understand how off-putting it can be to find a game that looks like you only buy half a game when you just get the base content. Paradox can get away with it because no one else really makes games like the ones they do (thankfully), Sega/Creative Assembly can get away with it too because Total War and Warhammer are two massive franchises with built in fanbases. However, Warno doesn't really have either of those luxuries. At least Eugen thought of a better name than "Wargame" this time around.

Geez! We're only a month out from Christmas and the last big game sale, and many of us are still paying off the bills and working through the games we got over the holidays. I also agree with the other comments about early access, the game's lack of content, and lack of a tutorial. As a rule I generally like to let any potential game I'm interested in simmer for a couple of months to work out the major bugs as like many of us I've been burned in the past and really don't appreciate being a pay-to-play beta tester. That said, I will be picking it up at some point in the near future.

Typically I would try getting into team games, and specifically focusing on a small portion of the map. That way you are able to really avoid getting a information overload. Later on when you get used to the mechanics you can do more single player games where you will be able to understand what the game is telling you rather than getting overwhelmed.

4:10 For the sake of realism, Infantry should be very hard to kill while they are in the forest or urban areas. The only way to get rid of them should be your own Infantry, or very intense artillery. For me, as someone who likes more realistic games, the fast pace and "arcadey" feel to the games is one aspect that is turning me off. It seems like Wargame/SD/Warno is on this middle ground where it tries to be a mix of arcade and realism, and just leaves both sides wanting for more. The other side is that these games mainly focus on mulitplayer and have, as you've mentioned, very small but extremely competetive communities. It's kinda like the Chivalry/Mordhau of RTS, but I guess this goes for all MP focused RTS games, which is probalby the reason this genre is pretty dead, and most successful RTS games focus on SP.

I think the best way to approach people who aren't so keen on the the RTS aspects is the campaign, for me it was a huge driving factor in Red dragon(played the 2nd Korean campaign about 7 times ) and even more in steel division, the AI isn't brain dead and for non-expirenced players, it is pretty nice to have, that's what keeps me with those two games Because of the lack of it (and my currently quite bad technical equipment), I have to pass on WARNO however I am confident that Eugene systems can make a lot of content, especially because it is very similar to previous games. I would definitely recommend it to other people interested in RTS or greater tactical military games, even tho it is a niche game, because it still deserves a look

I think they don't do enough to support modding and develop the games post launch, and release new games too frequently to build up a strong user base. They need to seriously build WARNO around the community, and incorporate real mod support because you know people could do amazing things with this platform with proper and accessible modding. Even if they don't dramatically expand their post launch dlc developments, I think true modding support would make the world of difference in getting a real community behind this game. The games as they stand often feel like DLC of each other, the same thing mostly repainted and repriced with slight differences. Not that there haven't been any improvements, there have, but that is just a general sentiment I think people have and the game developers should do more to bust that belief. As someone who has been pretty into all of the Eugen games developed as of late, and who absolutely loved the Wargame series, I only just discovered this game today as well. I think they could really improve the publicity efforts as well. These Wargame style games are all great but playing it at a serious level is mentally draining. Its so much fun and it requires a lot of you. I think they should also do some brainstorming to improve the casual experience while not taking away from the higher levels of gameplay. Maybe simpler game mods, maybe assistance tools, like delegating unit groups to AI control (around a user defined objective) while you focus on something else. There are a lot of opportunities to improve the user experience. I really hope they consider some of these things.

War gaame red dragon does have an over-arching campaign set in Korea. It's quite fun to play through at least once from each side and whille it is somewhat scripted, it is super cool to see new divisions showing up from each side with realistic forces. They're going down the direction that their player base isn't intereasted in. The problem with Warno is that it's incomplete and doesn't seem to be changing much from the formula of Wargame Red Dragon, so the community isn't really enticed to buy in. For me personally a big red flag is that Warno doesn't seem to be getting any progressing in terms of realisim/simulation. Also, If you notice your player counts are going down vs a game that you released years ago - you probably shouldn't try to model the new title after the failing title. Ether way - I'm glad that stupid front line macanic isn't in Warno. Wargame Red Dragon Player counts are higher than Steel Division 2.. I won't go to far into detail..but I did write a review about this in 2018 for Steel Division 1 if you REALLY want to know more about my perspective - you can find it under the exact name I'm using here.

I kinda got sick of the Eugen Systems formula during Wargame Red Dragon, but I did get a good few hundred hours out of that trilogy. Looking at this game and Steel Divisions, these games just feel like they're more of the same but in a new coat of paint (and with a new price tag). Not enough innovation/progress to get me hooked again, and there is simply too much other shit to play. I think what the game truly needs is a fantastic single player mode if they ever want to expand their audience. Multiplayer personally wasn't that fun to me if I wasn't playing with friends over VoIP. The strategy game MP scene has always been rather niche, even with a massive series like Total War.

Infantry are not really too weak, they are just massively overpriced (most of their transports as well) and the availability is too low. Eugen wanted to move away from the cheap infantry spam of Red Dragon, which wasn't really possible without the sell mechanic and more price granularity (WARNO's unit pricing is supposed to be double that of RD on average, along with the income). But they have massively over compensated for most infantry and transports (this is typical with Eugen games, they had rely on the community heavily to balance Red Dragon). There is also a bug right now where right clicking a building is always an attack move order, so infantry will not enter a building and so they get caught out easily. Overall I think WARNO has very high potential, but it needs a lot of work and even for genuine early access they might have released it a bit too early.

Wargame Red Dragon thoroughly sucked the fun out of Eugen's games for me. The combination of meta chasing, "tactical play" (man it's so fun to play with 6 units on this massive map), and the massive disparity between classic units and new units for no reason (to me) other than to sell DLCs just left a sour taste in my mouth every time I thought of playing multiplayer. After that there were only so many single player skirmishes I could do before it got old.

Come in and get smashed be the army general-mode. People who are familiar with this timeperiod and military may have an advantage but thats it. I remeber on R.U.S.E. What a great campaign. Rendercutscenes. A story. And tactical gameplay as well. Would be cool they would go in this direction at least in relation to make the game more able for beginners. It's obvious why. Eugen games have a very specific community and they are the only ones that play their games, including my self. If they added the ability for the community to make campaign maps I would play the darn thing forever. I personally find the multiplayer and skirmish boring, I like the hybrid of needing to carefuly pick the divisions you deploy, the fact that you aren't guarenteed to get the exact equipment you want/need. A campaign editor lends itself to the deck editor that is already a really cool feature, designing the particular divisons that a player can use in your campaign.

Not everyone likes multiplayer, and I hope this time the campaigns are more fleshed out. Out of the RD campaigns Mount Narodnaya and 2nd Korean War are the only ones to really feel extensive enough to warrant multiple play-throughs. Barrier of entry is extremely high. So many units for WG Red Dragon. I bought it and all the DLCS but when I actually tried to play on "very slow" it was still daunting for my first game after I downloaded community made starter decks. I ended up in bullet time most of the time. This looks simlar speed... it's completely overwhelming wall of information with very little in game help. To be competent at Red Dragon, I imagine you would have to play enough to recognize things like the relative strength of the (Alphabet soup version of the abrams tank, vs the alphabet soup version of the abrams tank vs the Alphabet soup of some chinese tank vs the Alphabet soup of some other chinese tank.) There were 4 different M1 abrams tanks when I played. They have drastically different power. The first abrams I deployed wasn't even willing to fire on a later REDFOR tank until it turned to the side because that model abrams had no prayer of penetrating the front armor. However, once I spent some time looking at enemy ai and my own unit stats... in a RTS.. at near paused speed, I realized I could deploy the M1AH2 abrams or some shit like that at higher cost that had twice the firepower. There are hundreds of different units. You can deploy riflemen in like 6 or seven different vehicles. This is still red dragon I'm talking about. That's why no one plays this. It's a fucking spread sheet RTS that requires significant time investment to even understand why you are losing. I'll probably keep trying since I've already spent the money, but WARNO is early access and far from finished....

I didn't even know this was a Eugen systems game. I heard some people talk about it and comparing it red dragon but that was it. From looking at this video, it looks like they combined the best elements from wargame and steel divisions together. So IMO it looks promising. Disclaimer, I never really played their games before, mostly just watch videos of said gameplay. But I always wanted to give RTS a try and this piqued my interest.

Something I noticed he mentioned was that Red Dragon doesn't have Turn Based Campaigns. Idk what he was thinking but I'm pretty sure you click an END TURN button during the campaign lol. I could be wrong tho

The thing I didn't like about Steel Division 2 is that it's essentially rush mode. You rush to capture the flags in which you hold on to until the timer runs out. I wanted battles having a limited number of units you recruit on the campaign map and unlimited timer so it amounts to using tactics rather than a capture the flag mode

I started with Eugen games with Red Dragon and played the living crap out of it, like 5000+ mp games. Was super excited for warno but it just feels weird to me. Seems like there are less units on the field but they are difficult to manage, like everything is happening too fast. I'll give it time tho, I'm sure it will get better. Right now Regiments is hitting my military rts cravings right now

Have you played wargame or steel division 2? Its basically the same as that. If youve played eu4 this game is waaaay easier to pick up than eu4 or any paradox game.

For newbies now would be good time to jump in, so you don't have to learn 600+ different units, but learn it little by little, as they add stuff. May look complicated, but currently there's so little units in the game, that it's pretty simple actually. Compared to Red Dragon which had over 1000 units. All there's to these games, is learning what role each unit type (AA, recon, tanks etc.) do, and how to position them. Terrain types are very limited, it's all about the units. After you know how recon works, you can apply that roughly into any recon unit from any nation/faction, you don't have to know all of them by heart.

I've played Red Dragon quite a bit and I still get pounded in multiplayer. Even in the single player games I try as hard as I can to not save/load scum my way through it. I sort of do a dry run of the campaigns before I attempt to stick to a single save. It is a really nice game but it takes a fair amount of trial and error to get the hang of things.

So few players, just now when I played it was 188 players online. Sad because it is a really good game. I agree it is hard for new players to start MP as they ends up beeing stomped, which might discourage many. Also: something is off with air power. As a pact player every game with a competent NATO player I end up beeing dominated in the air, even though I have tons of AA and AA-planes. But they will tweak it I’m sure. Anyways: it is a good game, you won’t regret it.

Now this was 2 years ago where the major issue was the lack of diversity in maps and units. This is fixed by now but another issue is the timeframe I think. While there are some changes its not all that different from Wargame as far as mechanics are concerned which is good imo but its set in the same time as Wargame European Escalation. My buddies and me were rather surprised when we heard that cause we thought theyd go forward in time as they did in Airland Battle and Red Dragon.

All everyone wanted with Steel Div was Wargame but WWII, however they change everything from how capture zones work to no longer just being nations so no one wanted to play either of them. And now, the same stuff no one wanted in Steel Div they added to Warno.
