It's so crazy to me. Would ANYONE go into the wilderness (make no mistake, the ocean is wilderness) & feed an apex predator like a grizzly bear? If you did, would you then mess with it? Literally, "poke the bear"?! Of course not. You'd watch em, extremely respectfully. Bring the same energy to the ocean & marine life.

I have to say the fact the shark was already so well behaved getting harassed as much as it was already, at a certain point touching and chasing is going to push these animals to the edge. I love that you two are educating on how the animals feel. How humans actions effectively took a docile animal to defensive and scared in an instant.

I do not think it was scared at all and do not agree that sharks would attack due to threat that easily it simply had an idiot right in front of him and it took a little nibble. Tigers attack with velocity and biting power, that was no attack just irritation. Generally if they are not comfortable they just swim off.....not like a cornered animal.

Problem also with this is that those sharks are associating the sound of that equipment and the humans with feeding, sharks are intelligent and even with my fish tank at home my Tiger Oscar Cichlids associate me with food, when they're hungry and they see me they start swimming back and forth erratically while looking at me and despite hand feeding them distinguishing me from the food, they can still bite me if they get too excited. Even Goldfish with their poor memories will follow your hand around if they associate you with food. I've also had an entire tank feed via an auto feeder, should come to no surprise that the fish in that tank never associated me with food and would completely ignore me or hide if they spotted me.

Did Woody really say “sharks just don’t attack humans, unless humans attack the sharks”? LMAO this guy is so ignorant!! Sharks are APEX PREDATORS. They (Great Whites and sometimes Tiger/Bull sharks) hunt us if they’re hungry or territorial. Sometimes, often times, even if the human has done nothing wrong except simply being in the water. Secondly- Threatening a shark (such as showing/holding a knife blade) will typically make it less likely to attack you, as sharks tend to want to attack defenseless prey and not a competitor. The only exception is if you aggressively chased the shark, then yes it would probably bite you for that

I think the shark "attacking" wasnt even attacking to get rid of the human attackers, it thought they were the damn food because they only were a couple meters away from huge amounts of guts released... It did not charge them at all, it slowly swam to the diver and started to nibble on it to see how it tastes.

Hi, I've recently graduated with a BS in Ecology and Environmental Biology. Shark 'frenzy' dives are a great example of why sharks are more economically valuable to us alive than dead. However, many ecologists have a problem with these particular dives because sharks that rely on supplemental feeding by humans have shown signs of altered activity and habitat use patterns.

Who cares if activity and habitat use patterns are altered? That’s the nature of evolution. Change is the default nature of living things and environments. No environment or form of life is static. Why would you base the morality of any choice on an expectation of static activity? It makes no sense. Environments always change. Life always adapts to its environment. Or it doesn’t. That is how evolution has progressed for two billion years. Also, Humans are living creatures. Never forget that biologically we are just another form of life on this planet. We are part of what is natural. There is to reason to separate us from other living creatures and call our activities unnatural. If a whale dies and sharks have abundant food for a week you would never advocate we get rid of the whale to avoid supplemental feeding. Every creature impacts and changes their environment. But if we do it it’s somehow wrong?

Knuckleheads always provoke the wrong one, and find out why it's a bad idea. Usually; those who provoke, are testing boundaries, trying to see how they compare. Those who don't and only act when they need to; is because they know exactly what they are capable of. Provoking isn't something they are interested in, because they don't have that inferiority complex. Provokers, usually do.

If I touched a cat and it scratched me, my parents wouldn't have ever thought about confronting the owners. They would have checked if I was hurt badly and would have reassured that I approach cats respectfully the next time. I mean... Cats sometimes go from laying on the ground begging to be pet to "get the f away"-mode in the blink of an eye but usually they show pretty recognizeable clues on that they don't like something and you should stop... As a surfer and a sailor (not yet a diver, but plan on getting my open water cert this summer.. hence why I am binging all your vids lol) I have a healthy respect for sharks. A shark will generally leave you alone unless they mistake you for food. Problem is, to a shark (which have horrible vision) a surfer paddling on a surfboard looks a lot like a wounded seal splashing around from underneath. Luckily, most sharks that attack surfers take one bite and realize fiberglass, foam, and neoprene don't taste good, so they spit you out.. unluckily for humans, they might spit you out, but those teeth do a LOT of damage with one bite before they do. Wetsuits save a lot of surfers lives because it acts like one big compression bandage, or you would bleed out immediately in the water. I have actually seen a Great White while surfing the Oregon coast.. and immediately caught the next wave all the way to shore, and didn't go back out for two weeks. Surfers despise people who chum for sharks in shallow water.. it brings them in close to the shoreline where humans are, and makes attacks much more likely. There is a special place in hell reserved for these people. Sharks and I have come to an understanding... I don't eat them in restaurants, and they don't eat me in the ocean.. it's worked so far 😅

They can also tell the difference between different animals at the surface since they hunt them in different ways. What happens is sharks see you and don’t know exactly what you are and their sense of touch is through their mouth since they don’t have hands.

I don't know about unethical that's an opinion, it can certainly be dangerous because if you are injured underwater it increases your chance of drowning. I feel that sharks of any species should not be fed and should simply be kept at a distance. I don't agree with the tourist diving with sharks that has become so popular mainly because in my opinion the biggest benefit of scuba is the ability to see how the underwater ecosystem actually works independent of human manipulation. Luring animals to come closer certainly cheapens that and is not a real representatation of nature just like an aquarium isn't.

I am actually really amazed with the patience of the shark... Everything that I've seen these people do in this video just seems like a terrible idea. It all to me, seems extremely amateur, reckless, and dangerous, and absolutely seems like they are taunting the shark. They feed the shark then sorround it and touch and poke it with sticks! To me, that is just wanting to get bitten. I had no clue sharks could be so chill. Talk about poking a bull (tiger) shark.

I've done this very site, in Fiji. One thing I would say, and you touched on it not being black and white, is that (according to the locals) the tourism around this shark diving experience has massively boosted the marine life in the area. No fishing, lots of tourism, heaps of marine life. I remember the locals telling us that marine life had recovered massively once fishing stopped and dive tourism became the norm in the area. Much more fish quantities and varieties.

I respect that I have no right to say what a community does to make a living, and I agree that shark diving is better than shark fishing or shark by-catch in net fishing. I hope one day we do the right thing because its best for animals, not because it makes the most money.

I have also done this shark dive and the divemasters have done this feed for years and rarely will there be any incident. Sorry but there is not much to compare with a 14ft female coming up that rock wall and you see the actually size of her mouth and realizing if she or any shark that large wanted to actually bite down on you it would be all over.

Yep,completely disagree with it. I've had hundreds of shark encounters, none of them in a feeding situation.it is not necesarry. It might be more hit and miss but for me that's part of the excitement. sharks have value for tourism, it's typical in modern society and bad behaviour to expect immediate gratification.Talk about entitled. It does change their behaviour and has definitely led to attacks either during or after the shark feed.

I just finished a trip to Playa Del Carmen. One of the dives I do (every year since 2017) is a bull shark feeding. A big part of this dive is always a briefing on the shark population and behavior as well as the appropriate human behavior during the dive. This is always a VERY professional dive that will be cancelled at the first hint of a problem or inappropriate behavior. Shark conservation and education is always one of the main topics and respect towards them and the environment always comes first. Dive Balam at the Royal Hacienda is a top notch, professional group that always takes safety, professionalism, environmental protections and respect for the sport very seriously. This video made me cringe from beginning to end.

@@Peace-tk3gr These dives have been happening for years and have helped to keep the shark population from plunging due to overfishing by local fisherman. In the past, these local fisherman have killed the sharks to make money. As overfishing in general in Mexico has reduced the the entire population of marine life in this unregulated area, sharks, in particular, have suffered greatly. In an effort to save these sharks, money is raised from every dive to pay the fisherman not to kill sharks. Funds for educating people about the importance of these sharks is also helping to raise an awareness on both a local and an international level. I truly believe it is great idea. On these dives, the sharks we dive with are pregnant Bull sharks, No one is allowed to harass them in any way and the procedures to do this are done with the safety of the sharks and the divers being at the forefront of everyone’s consideration. We dive a line to the bottom down to about 90ft, follow another line over to a sandy ledge and lay still flat on the sand, shoulder to shoulder holding yet another line while the dive team oversees the operation. When we are ready to head to the surface, everyone goes up as one group and we can watch the sharks perfectly outlined against the sand below our fins as we ascend. It is, truly, a fantastic opportunity to see these magnificent creatures and i plan to continue to do this as long as I can.

My dream is to dive in the ocean one day and face my fears. :) I think it's possible for a shark to attack a human unprovoked, but I know that this is an incredibly rare event and typically something will have to be wrong with the shark or it's a case of mistaken identity. In the latter case, I believe diving is pretty safe because it's very obvious to the sharks that you are not food when you have all of that gear on and aren't floating at the surface (not to mention the noise). Basically, it's so unlikely so as to not be worth worrying about.

If anything goes wrong, you are going to have a very bad time as support infrastructure and qualified personnel in Fiji are either nonexistant or even better non functioning for the last X years (but they claim it works *khm* hyperbaric chamber *khm*). Sharks are by far my favourite animals, most of the time bites only occur for one of two reasons: 1. You're provoking it 2. It bites you once to feel you out. They're very much like dogs, they don't have hands to feel with so they rely on their mouth. Juvenile sharks tend to make that mistake more than any other. You can also read their body language if you know a bit about sharks. Again, they're like dogs. You can tell when they're agitated or calm. They just need to be respected. Edit: Threshers are absolutely gorgeous, 100% my favourite shark

I went thru pilot training at Tyndall AFB and when I wasn't flying, I worked at the Emerald Coast Divers on weekends as a divemaster. I would usually do a predive dive to make sure the anchor was set and to see what was swimming around. When I did the pre dive brief I would tell them what they could experience and if there was a shark in area I made sure they were okay. If there was a shaky diver he/she had the option to stay on board. Or I or the other DM would go down w/ said diver.

They have no fear of attacking anything in thier way. I've had bull sharks attack the boat when we weren't fishing or anything. Just enjoying time on the boat. Many stories of people being bit by smaller bull sharks, I've personally never seen it with my own eyes but I have seen video that a buddy took of a bull shark swinging up the Potomac river right where we nornally swim and snorkel if we are able. The water over here isn't the cleanest or clearest. But u can still see atleast 10 to 20 ft most times with calm currents.

This should be a great video for people to watch to show how gentle sharks can be. That Tiger shark could have went up,. put his jaws around that dude and shook him and ate him without even thinking. He was curious and since he does not have hands, he went up to see if that was food or not. I think with all the commotion, the shark got confused, tested and backed off. I dont have a problem with shark feeding, but WAY TOO CLOSE for me. Heck I have a couple of family members that I stay out of they way for when it comes to an all you can eat buffet. I trust these sharks more than them. Also, people think trained and coniditioned is the same thing and it is not. I can definetely go up to my dog's bowl and take it from them bc I trained it that I am alpha and I eat first. A shark is conditioned in knowing those entites bring food and thats it. There is no training or taming of a shark

The closest I've done to this was in the Maldives, where we did a night dive to a little jetty at a resort where they clean fish to serve at their restaurant. Lots of stingrays and nurse sharks, and they get really intimately close. I had sharks pass by less than an inch away from me, and stingrays try to climb me. Nobody in the group reached out to touch anything though, maybe it's to do with culture, I think I was the only one in the dive group that wasn't German, or German speaking Swiss. I have touched a nurse shark, but I think it would be more fair to say that the nurse shark touched me, as I was stationary and filming it, and it swam into me(touching the hand holding the camera), but that was in Cozumel, Mexico.

The cameraman needs to bring a red filter next time he films a shark attack.

Thanks for this one, sharks are misunderstood, it’s never the sharks fault, we’re in they’re world!! Well delivered, I dove with tigers, hammerheads and bull sharks in Hawaii and Bahamas, incredible! Wonderful experience, sharks are incredible, humans are hideous at times 😞

Sharks are just so incredible. I had the amazing experience of cage diving with sharks off Stewart island in New Zealand and they are just so phenomenal. What were these people thinking 🤔

Seems like this entire thing could just be fixed with a simple law that says you have to stay 50 feet away when feeding the shark or something like this. Obviously companies would break but you have to enforce it
