Cave Diver Completely Lost and Left for Dead underwater, so they called Edd

Ойын-сауық

Four divers go into a cave system in North Florida and make the wrong turn into an extremely tight section of the cave where they quickly become trapped and lose all visibility.
Three out of the four divers barely manage to find their way out, the fourth diver is completely stuck and lost inside the cave. Luckily for these divers they were diving inside Jackson Blue Springs, a cave system only a couple of miles away from Cave Adventurers, the home of Edd Sorenson who is one of the world's greatest cave divers and an expert in underwater cave rescues and body recoveries.
Within less than an hour, Edd was inside the cave searching for the body of the missing cave diver...here's what he found.

Edd is the closest thing i can think of to a true legend. Man goes into the most impossible of situations and rescues people that should be dead and would be if it were anybody but him coming to help. I’d say this was even more significant than a firefighter entering an engulfed structure. Most people wouldn’t have attempted this rescue, they would have waited for him to expire and then brought out the corpse. The odds are so high that this person is going to panic and kill you both id almost call it suicide to attempt this rescue that Ed did. He’s a true hero in every sense of the word. He had zero regard for his own life.

Even though I appreciate what Edd has done, but firefighting and diving are ABSOLUTELY not equivalent...a firefighter faces an unknown building layout and conditions, highly probable deadly explosions due to backdrafts, explosions from fuels or chemicals, collapsing structure which can kill them or get them stuck, and above all, extreme and constant heat...all of that does not equal to the main issue here which is low visibility and getting lost.

I almost drowned 3 times as a child. Despite multiple lessons from the ARC and the Marines I just wasn't confident in deep water. So I got a book on how to swim and went to the pool and taught myself. Eventually worked my way up to rescue diver certification. People drown when they panic. Even seasoned swimmers and divers. You must learn to get past your fear on your own terms and how to maintain control of your emotions. Knowing what to do and how things happen helps with that. Good luck to you!

I don't know that Ed _can_ really teach someone to be what he is. He can pass along as much knowledge as possible and things like your channel raising awareness are huge, but I think it really has to just be that someone or hopefully several someones just step up and find that they have the instinct and the will necessary. I mean, how do you teach anyone to be another Ed, or Mike? Someone either has it or they don't. Making sure that training standards are constantly improved and that awareness is pushed as widely as possible os probably the best that can be done. Honestly, this may be one of those situations where most people that want to try and learn to do what Ed does probably don't have the right mindset to really be great. The best ones will probably be those that just train to be the best they can be and when they find themselves in a situation that nobody should want to be in, they discover that they are up to the task. Does that make sense?

Woody is right when he speaks about Edd’s 6th sense as an instinct, our brains register much more informations than we are conscious of (particularly when we do something we are expert in) and when they detect something unusual they send messages to our conscious part. I learned this a few years ago after a few months in my first wheelchair in a physical rehabilitation center, I unconsciously take note about everything who can be a potential danger or a problem for me because of my disability and act in seconds when facing it like someone keeping his bag on his shoulder and risking knocking me in the head with it, any cracks, rocks or other risks on the ground for my wheels even while speaking with someone, listening to music or else, etc.. My husband always laugh and call me Vision because I anticipate everything 😅😂

The instinct discussion reminded me of a line from a book I was listening to today. Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman, it's an excellent book so far. Edd's intuition is so strong because of the vast amount of information he processes subconsciously and incorporates into his decision making process. It's astounding. "A concise definition of skilled intuition: The situation has provided a cue, which has given the expert access to information stored in memory, and the information provides the answer"

I'm really late to commenting on this video, but 100% what Edd is saying about instinct is spot on. It isn't just with diving but with a lot of things in general. The greatest people in history who were the greatest in their crafts or fields, all have a certain instinct that can't simply be taught. It isn't something that is learned rather it is developed. Developed through experiences, knowledge, and your own life history. His idea about the rest coming naturally through extreme situational training is the closest you could come to "teaching" that instinct and I think is a wonderful idea. But to get another person exactly like Edd Sorenson would be very difficult.

Woody, thanks for sharing another great story from Edd. Definitely a true hero and pioneer. I took note of his comment regarding he doesn't know how to teach "instinct". While I agree that to him it is instinct, I think it actually boils down to his ability to think critically in stressful situations and do real time problem solving. This is why it is difficult to develop training for these types of rescues, as you can't simply follow a check list. I would offer that the training for cave rescues should focus on developing the student's abilities to think critically in different scenarios, rather than trying to teach them how to solve specific problems. That would likely be the most successful way to train the next generation of cave rescue divers. Perhaps generating a bunch of different scenarios you could choose at random to exercise with the students to see how they approach solving those problems. Really enjoy the show in general, keep up the great work.

The anxiety I feel just listening to the telling of this incident is pretty much unbearable, it's literally to the point that I can't finish listening to the conclusion of the story! I don't know how this man does this repeatedly but he's definitely the closest thing most of us will ever see to a angel in the flesh! The courage, bravery, and strength (both physically and mentally) are hard to imagine someone possessing, and all of that coupled together with a unimaginably high level of skill /experience is beyond impressive! I hope Mr. Ed has a long life and when his time comes he's warm in his bed sleeping, very old , and peaceful and not in a dark silted out cave! I'm blown away by his retelling of the many recovery / rescue of lost divers!

Way too many people go past their limits. When my kids became old enough to dive I made sure that we all became rescue certified. We did a lot of wreck dives but no cave dives. Safety is paramount. I made sure my kids understood this from day one.

It’s a sad fact that no one from our generation will be this badass. This dudes straight up hard as nails. Hero isn’t a strong enough word, what a privilege to hear him tell the story. Great job Woody!
