If I’m not mistaken I believe that cave passage Gus was talking about leads to the Nope room in the Nevergonnagothere region of Screwthatastan!!! 😂

I’m a plumber who has never dived before and I love watching dive talk! It’s always good vibes on this channel
"What's this video about?" was my genuin reaction too. That story was great.
As a skinny guy with an overactive metabolism, I understand why Woody doesn’t think he can go without food for more than a day. We have pretty much no reserves. I’m willing to bet that Woody would get pretty hangry by the end of the first day. I know I would.
Woody contemplating the horror of being more than 3 hours away from a Burger King !
I love hearing things like 'gritting teeth against the pressure' just knowing Woody's about to get triggered so hard haha
I'm not going to lie, Gus talking about the hole and them both talking about the rule of 1/3 and fasting was more entertaining than the video they were reacting to! I was disappointed each time they went back to the video! 😂😂

31:45 there’s a difference between fasting at home relaxed, safe, and able to sleep….. versus fasting while in a life threatening situation, constantly using energy to keep yourself in a relatively safe position in the cave stuck underground. Although I agree they would probably be fine after a day… but the lack of sugar (low blood sugar) while in a life threatening situation would definitely put you at a higher risk of succumbing than someone who was able to eat to keep their strength up.

@dis8791
20 күн бұрын
Yep, plus the cold that Gus said they should be more worried about also takes energy to combat. Since I don't get hungry (autism powers /s), when I haven't eaten for a good while the first indicator of it is when I get way colder than I should be.
You guys misunderstood the pressure comment. It was referencing the pressure he felt from squeezing through a tight passage, not the actual water pressure. Seemed pretty obvious to me.
For reference, this accident was in 1988; most of the footage here is just generic B-roll stuff. No CCRs, no Sidekick, not even any sidemount, no RUVs, and no laptops even would have been used back then. 'Sanctum' (2011) may have been inspired by this incident but it's just a drama based on being trapped in a cave. For example, I don't think any of the guys involved in the real 1988 incident actually murdered each other. Food rationing: yeah you can go a day without food. My military survival training taught the same 30 days for food and 3 days for water, depending on climate and exertion.
guys please watch Null Arbor dreaming, not this AI slop! its a full documentary made using the actual footage they captured during the expedition, disaster and rescue!
You know it’s gonna be a good day when divetalk uploads!

Woody it's not Star Trek it's a clip from the movie "Sanctum". Most of the footage is from that film.❤ Edit: comment made before Gus mentioned it😂
Always good to see you guys! "Hey everyone, my name is Gus - Hi! I'm Woody!" :D
Love Spelunking as well! Rule is that if you can fit thru a metal clothes hanger you can go into restricted caves.
Truamatic experiences like this hit ppl in ways they never dreamed it would. I'm not a diver, but I've come close to death in a couple different situations, and I know from experience that it can make you not be able to put yourself back into risk of being in that same situation again. I had a really scary experience dry caving when I was about 18- and I developed claustrophobia as a result and to this day- many decades later- have never stepped foot into another cave- and never will. If you put me into a spot where I can't turn and see what's around me- I freak out, start feeling like I can't breathe, and then this unbelievable need to get out arises and I will start fighting and panicking. And it wasn't even that bad of an incident to be honest- we ran out of light about a mile underground. Long story short- we bought a bunch of cheapo Walmart flashlights and tried to explore a local cave- none of us being cavers or having any experience with it. And like I said- they all died, one by one- and left us in complete darkness in a place where we had zero hope of ever finding our way out. Luckily, another group came in and we walked out with them, but we had spent about an hour in the dark trying to figure out what to do. About the time we saw someone's light coming, things were starting to get ugly- ppl were starting to panic and blame one another. And this is not a high traffic cave, this is a cave hardly anyone even knows about- so the chances of another group coming in like that were so small it's insane that it happened and saved us. The group said they went to church nearby and had been talking about coming and checking out the cave after services for weeks- but for some reason, that Sunday- they did it. If they hadn't, I wouldn't be typing this- I'd be dead and no one would've even known where to look for us.
@TrappedinSLC

Yeah, you can't predict in advance at all. You can even go through multiple experiences and not develop PTSD and then have something that doesn't even seem as bad happen and wham, PTSD. Our brains are just weird. (Also remember that it's *perception* of danger that is the issue, not objectively how much danger you are in. And danger to other people can also trigger the same sort of issues.) It's not associated with how calm you are at the moment, either. I have PTSD and during the incident that cause it I was completely fine.

@@wakingtheworld I would, if it really negatively affected my life- I don't really feel it does. I'm an old man now anyway- retired, live on a 60-acre farm- I'm good. They did close the cave I was talking about to the general public though- now you have to have a state permit- issued by the Tenn. Valley Authority to go in- and they only let researchers and certified cavers with experience inside. It's a miracle we made it out without need of rescue. Just one of the many stupid things we did as teenagers.

Unfortunately it isn't just the narration. It's gotten advanced enough that the ENTIRE process is automated. The voice is AI generated, the dialogue is AI generated and even the video editing is AI generated. The bot is fed a theme/information for the video and is supplied clips, then, when the video is edited together, it generates a narration for each edited bit of the video for it to plausibly fit together and be coherent. There may be some human editing and tweaking made to the final product but since the channel of this original video is terminated, I don't know how lazy this particular channel is. You'll see this notoriously with the current "movie recap channel" plague. The content farms using this tech is getting really atrocious and so long as they can profit off of it and people continue to watch it, this problem will only get worse.
When i was a kid and fun was still allowed a neighbor set up his crawlspace with gym mats to make cave restrictions for halloween, hearing bout the spelunking conferences reminds me a lot of that.
the lack of hunger while fasting is due to a bodily process called "autophagy" which literally means the body starts eating itself. Basically you start to metabolize energy stored in glycogen and fat, which is why fasting can be an effective way to lose weight if done correctly.
Thank all the gods that the falling debris didn't snap the guideline or alter it leading into the abyss!
I also went a couple of days without eating, just fluids, when I fell ill with a lung infection during a trip in Cuba. I was active everyday, even went hiking in Escambray Mountains. As long as you keep yourself active the hunger goes away. It's definitely a weird experience. You eventually have to force yourself to eat once you hit a certain stage. That's the hard part.
I've watched so many of your videos. So interesting. Thank you; I hope you do them forever! Looking forward to hearing the latest about DAN. Love to both
Haven’t laughed harder than I did at “we had to procure our own breakfast man” 😂😂😂😂
Wow Gus first time coming back to the channel after a year or so, you look incredible man. Congratulations on the weight loss, you look so much younger. God bless you.
You need to dive the Shaft with Mike and Edd.
with videos like this I feel the gain on your mic's is higher than the gain of the video you're reacting to. every time you guys speak my neighbours can hear :D
In order to "stay calm" while facing death, you have to have already come to terms with your own mortality, which most people have not. I think people who face danger and do things that entail high risk are more likely to have accepted the fact that they could die doing these things. They want to live, obviously, but when facing a life/death situation and reaching calmness... there is a level of detachment from survival that has been internalized. Overcoming desperation and panic for humans is extremely difficult and requires some intense mental and physical training.

I was a roofer for 15 years. What you described is exactly the techniques I used to put fear aside and do dangerous things day after day.
Hi Gus and Woody, last weekend I qualified with British Sub Aqua Club as an Ocean Diver (to 20m in a UK quarry) and am now on my Sport Diver (to 35-40m) training.. 1st June I'll do my first dive in the sea off the coast of Plymouth, UK, to a ship wreck at 20m. The dry suits are a major faff but fine once you get in the water (unless you hire one with a leaky neck collar like I did!). The only reason I even started was because of watching your reaction videos and Cozumel and live videos! You inspired me to try diving because of the way you explain everything so methodically and how chilled out and positive you both are.... so thank you both! Love your videos!!!
If I went without eating for 27 hours, I would request cheeseburgers over oxygen.

Our desire to explore is universal. I have crawled thru and under and over collapsing timbers, one way in, one way out and sometimes, very little air. Def. scares the hell out of me that it could collapse. I did go back to try again and yep, was collapsed.

Aussie here! ☺️ Not a diver but love your videos, I've learnt so much!
As always, love your content. I've never been diving, but I enjoy learning about it from your talks. That said, I have a bit of an odd request: There's a new entry in a popular game series coming out in a few days that's all about diving. The game is called "Endless Ocean: Luminous." A lot of people are pretty excited about this release, and I personally would *love* to hear you guys react to it in any way. If you could do a fun livestream or video of the two of you playing (it has multiplayer), that would be insanely awesome, but even a reaction to one of the trailers or to someone else playing the game would be fun. I'd love to hear any insights you might have about the diving aspect of "Endless Ocean: Luminous," how realistic the gameplay feels, etc. It might bring in new viewers, too, since the game has a decent amount of hype built up around it, and some players might decide they're interested in diving in general as a result of playing the game. There are people who have gone into marine biology based on an interest sparked by playing previous entries in this series growing up, so I'm sure there are some divers who've emerged as a result as well. Just a thought. Regardless, love your videos and am looking forward to whatever you do next. Keep up the great work!
No its only dangerous here in Australia if you do something stupid if it looks like its going to bite you don't poke it

Almost every open water dive master I have worked with has had a ascent rule...I.E.At 500 psi begin your ascent, at deeper depths the amount can vary depending on number of decomp stops. But the ability of unrestricted direct ascent makes the rule of thirds very flexible for open water. Once again you guys are boss!
Cannot believe you mentioned Don I've been watching him a long time xD
I will probably never have the oppurtunity to scuba dive but i enjoy hearing yalls stories. Id be scared to death to disconnect a tank from my body.
I dived Pannakin's a few years ago. Spectacular dive but the dry entry section looks incredibly unstable still, and we take a lot of survival gear just in case the entry collapses.

I don't care what shape their head is, they're all "DeathAdderRattlerMambaCoralCobras" to me.
something I've been wondering while binging your episodes, and just truly curious, haven't dived yet, but really fascinated by the whole science of it.. but the question that I have been wondering, when you are in the ocean.. compared to being in a fresh water cave, due to the volume of water in the ocean is the pressure change more than if you are in cave? if the cave water isn't coming or going directly to the ocean? just something i have been wondering this whole time any info is appreciated :)
😂 " I'm to old to rough it like that anymore " I totally felt that Woody 😅 at 60 yrs old I find myself trying to make everything a little more comfortable 😂
"If you and your buddy are penetrating, and you are 1/3rd in, and worst case scenario you still have 1/4th left to go and your equipment fails"
So, no one is going to ask whats a "DiveTalk Go", the most amazing secret dive tank?
Woody you can easily go a day without eating. Once you get past a certain point you no longer feel hungry and you actually feel really good. I can feel my brain working better and I hate to mess it up by eating b/c I'll crash after. Its almost a euphoric feeling. At least for me.
Damn, right guy been working out
Ok, I beg another question. I’ll probably ask many but next one. Why don’t cave drivers carry some kind of strobe light? In cases of lost divers or body recovery would it make locating the missing easier?
The eating thing also depends on your level of activity. When I was younger, I got a really bad infection in my mouth and refused to eat for about 5 days because it was just uncomfortable to. I slept through most of it, and woke up on the 6th day feeling fine. My mother ended up getting me to sip on a fruit smoothie after begging me for about 2 hours. Best smoothie I've ever had to this day 😂
I believe he was talking about the pressure of the walls as he squeezed thru the restriction.
