Ever wonder what life underwater is like for a commercial Geoduck Diver?
Here is some POV footage that was taken over the course of a few days working with a shellfish farm in the Puget Sound in Washington State. During these few days, I had the opportunity to learn and experience the job as a Geoduck dive harvester. This line of work is far different than underwater welding, playing with underwater chainsaws, or recreational SCUBA diving. Although you will learn these skills at schools such as the Divers Institute of Technology or Commercial Diving Academy, it is a completely different world and almost nothing learned there, will translate into the commercial dive harvester world. Ironically, my experience underwater treasure hunting and searching and recovering items underwater helped quite a bit to help locate the geoducks siphons and holes in the sea floor. How much money does a commercial diver make while harvesting Geoduck or shellfish? This all depends on how much product you bring up from the sea floor and what condition it is in. You can make as little as $100/ day or more than $1,000 per day. It’s very similar to commercial fishing, the good thing is, everyday is different and it sure beats your average 9 to 5.
Pronounced Gooey-Duck, the name Geoduck comes from the Nisqually tribe in Washington State and means simply, “Dig Deep”. Geoduck seed starts on top of the sea floor and over years will use it’s “digger” (pretty much a foot) to dig deeper and settle in typically 3 feet below the mud line. Typical Geoducks weigh around two to three pounds. Geoduck can be found in the wild in Alaska, Canada, Washington State, California, and even in Mexico! The Geoduck clam has also earned the nickname “King Clam” for it’s huge size. All of the Geoducks in this video landed in China, Japan, & Asia within 48 hours of them being removed from the sea bed.

Reach out to hoodsport n dive. They work with a lot of harvest Diver’s specifically. They provide SSA surface supplied air, diver, tender, first aid, safety, and nitrox training. There is Diver’s institute in Seattle also but not geared specifically for harvest Diver’s.

I think you need a geoduck harvester license if you are harvesting wild ducks but this was for a farm on private property. Hoodsport n dive is a great place to reach out to with specific questions.

Great video. How much work is it to harvest these ducks while SCUBA diving without the water pressure pipe? Not sure if there’s enough thrust from my dive scooter to make the digging easier or not? Cheers, #SeattleRingHunter

Are you just talking recreational? There's a video of two guys using a manual bilge pump in reverse to liquify the sand and pull out the geoduck. I've been wanting to try it!

@@SSPDIVING Thanks!! so according to the OSHA regs. a chamber is required on the dive site while using nitrox. Responding to the comment below, some guy hacked off.

Yes! OSHA recognizes nitrox or “enriched air” as a mixed gas. Which is really unfortunate actually. It’s not like heliox or breathing other true mixed gases. Makes the scopes of work more limited for smaller companies because who can afford to pay to have a chamber on site for something say... like an anchor recovery in 100’ of water? Which will be a short dive but not by any means something that should require a chamber. If diving air and there is in water decompression is required, they also require a chamber on site. There are some regs that are simply overkill in my opinion.

Grab the head of that duck and don’t let it go while you run the wand down along it. Pulling gently until it pops loose. Cant screw around or it’ll disappear on ya. Good video though

Thanks man, the water pressure seemed to be too low, the seafloor was a few inches of sand and then pea gravel the rest of the way. These suckers we stuck in there pretty good. First time trying ducks though, was a fun experience. Would only do it again if I owned the property lol
