    Just a FYI for future reference, but the solder in those sleeves did not melt. When it does, it completely loses its shape and flows into the wires. I've used those types of sleeves thousands of times in the avionics world. Right now, those wires are just squeezed together by the slightly deformed solder ring. The heat has to be applied consistently until you see the ring fully melt. The cool thing in the video is seeing how insanely well bonded the tile with the Ditra.

    Yeah, those air heated solder splices are rubbish, and I very much doubt they are approved for avionics repairs which normally stipulate a crimped, non soldered connection. There's not enough solder in them to flow through the joint at the best of times, plus the solder isn't the best either. I can see this failing again at some point, high resistance, and because the original joint wasn't done correctly, there'll be no coverage for the costs of redoing it again.

  • @kenhoward127

    @kenhoward127

    They are not used for avionics repairs. There is a specific type used to solder a lead from the ground of shielded cable. Some even come with the wire already in place. You are correct regarding repairs... a high quality crimp connecter is used that has a heat shrink sleeve melted over it, which completely shields the crimp connection from the environment.@@thegrimreaper7777

    You do a better job at being electricians, than electricians would do at tiling! We JUST put our ditra heat and sensors in so I’m glad I saw this repair video, just in case. Cutting the wires different lengths so the two splice/crimps are staggered and don't align can help reduce the overall bulk of the repair (if you have sufficient length of course).

    You should have tested if the sensor was reading well before trying to melt the solder, which I don't think actually melted. So I have used those in the past and what I have done was actually twist the wired together, test the connectivity, then pull the solder tube over, test again, and then shrink wrap it. Maybe it's just me being stupidly cautious.

    Had the same issue with bad readings from both of the sensors we installed. One was reading too high and didn’t heat up and the other too low and was constantly trying to heat the floor. Schluter reached back out to me and will do a diagnosis in 2 weeks. Said I’d be reimbursed for my time for demo and replacing the tile. I was told there was a known issue with some sensors being faulty.

    @@TileCoach I posted a separate comment with the list of effected wire kits, to my understanding the major tell is if the sensors are packaged with red tape tabs instead of the usual black wire ties (schluter bought a run from a dif supplier I would guess?) I think their hope was that most got pulled from distribution before it became a widespread issue.

    It does not appear that you actually melted the solder ring (21:26). If the solder melted properly it would have blended in with the wires just as if you used a soldering iron. But given that this application will be set in mortar and not subject to movement, and that the two wires are touching, the circuit will likely work as expected. If this was done for a harsher environment (aircraft or marine) where there would be a lot of vibration, you would have a problem.

    That butt joint isn't complete. The ring of solder MUST MELT. This will fail again because the heat wasn't high enough. These type of connectors need a heat gun with a curved shield on the nozzle to direct heat back toward the gun heating the connector from both sides, and you need to get it to close to 1,000 degrees F so the solder melts. You might have a connection since both wires fill the connector most of the way, but over time there could be corrosion buildup between the wires causing increased resistance and another failure. You might get lucky, we'll see over time, but next time watch someone on KZread demonstrate how to use these solder connectors! Really poor connection and you need to post another video explaining how this isn't right, and show the right way to do this. Again, the SOLDER MUST MELT, if it doesn't it isn't doing anything at all.
