Distinguished Alumni Award 2024 | Cliff Christian

Dr. Clifford Christians pursued an education in linguistics. He received a BA in Greek Classics from Calvin College in 1961, and a BD in Greek from Calvin Theological Seminary in 1964. His studies of the Greek language continued at Fuller Theological Seminary, where he received his ThM in 1966 and completed a thesis on urban culture in Antioch. While at Fuller Seminary, Clifford simultaneously pursued an MA in Linguistics at the University of Southern California, which he completed in 1968.
Following the completion of his studies at Fuller Seminary and the University of Southern California, Clifford began his PhD in Communications at the University of Illinois, finishing in 1974. After completing his PhD, the University of Illinois offered him a position in the Communications Research department. For thirty-five years, Clifford held positions as department chair, head of the PhD in Communications program, and director of the Institute of Communications Research. Over those thirty-five years, Clifford was awarded two honorary doctorates from Marquette University (LittD) and Emerson College (Doctor of Humane Letters).
The Distinguished Alumni Award is given annually to recipients who have brought unusual credit to their alma mater by their distinction in Christian ministry.
