    Cautiously optimistic. DSW2 definitely streamlined some of the things that needed to be streamlined, but I'm not 100% sold on the UI. Then again, DSW1 had a horrid UI and I loved it anyway :). Just like the original, I'm seeing and expecting lots of flaws, but I'm also seeing something special that makes it all worth it. And, if I'm being completely honest with myself, the biggest thing I hope for is pretty space battles that doesn't drag me away from the spectacle with constant macro/micro. For new viewers, TortugaPower is normally a lot more collected, but he is trying to push these videos out quickly (as he says himself). After the rush of the first week or two, you can expect much more cohesive explanations, strategy analysis, critique, etc. A lot can change in the early balance patches, as well. It's going to be a little while until the game mechanics are set in stone and the technical aspects of strategy can get properly analyzed by the community.

    Wow! I _absolutely_ agree with you about the pre-warp start - at least when playing the original game. I can't even imagine playing it any other way. So I'm really glad that's what you're doing here. PS. I think you're the 4th KZreadr I've watched with a preview of Distant Worlds 2. A few other things, while I'm watching: 1) I really like that you can randomize the research options a bit. I was _such_ a fan of that in the original Master of Orion. It meant that I couldn't find an optimal way to play the game and then just do that in _every_ game. It didn't make _much_ of a difference, I suppose, but just enough to keep things interesting. So that's a really good addition here! 2) I think it's weird that luxuries help your population grow. In our reality, it's poor cultures with _few_ luxuries which typically have the highest population growth. I could see medical care influencing that, but luxuries? Well, it's just a game. I thought the economic system in the original game was pretty silly, too, but it was still fun to play. 3) I see that Democracy gives you a 20% bonus to tourist income! I don't know how it is in this game, but I was a huge fan of tourism in the original. It really seemed to bring in lots of money. OK, I'm going to stop commenting now. I'll never finish the video if I don't. :)

    I also really like the Pre-Warp start. Imagine a mod that delays the beginning of the interstellar era and gives you more gameplay in the home system, so you can really take your time to grow to an interstellar species. You mentioned The Expanse, a setting like that for the beginning would be quite cool. Like you actually start with a few space missions (basically our phase today, but more advanced) to explore near astronomical bodies and your scientists have to learn how to survey them, maybe you build a first space station which is only slightly more advanced than the ISS and is mainly used as a hub for space missions, but new spacecraft is still build on the planet. Or a cool alternative would be to build the first station on some near moon. Kurzgesagt has a cool video about the idea of having a moon base as the operational basis for space colonization. And maybe some country or the private sector on your planet actually begins to colonize some near body without your permission and becomes independent later and you get a situation similar to the Mars vs Earth conflict in The Expanse (or All Tomorrows). There should probably multiple options of early events. So you would basically have a small game before the actual gameplay. Maybe you build first mining outposts, but your workers start to rebel and establish themselves as a new republic (Beltalowda!)

    Yes I like this idea, and I want to try to create it (maybe mod the first hyperspace module to be very expensive). It depends a bit on your galaxy roll and stuff, but there's issues with material surplus once you're past the early game, and monopolies/general rare resource dominance are too strong. I checked one of the late games out in one of your let's plays and you were lucky with a certain monopoly, and there's also certain things to consider regarding population, because they're the money generators. But yeah, you very easily get big problems there, which makes a game just go into the bin. I don't mind losing a good game at all, but when my time is wasted on some grief, that just makes me lose all respect.

  • @BlueTemplar15

    @BlueTemplar15

    @@TortugaPower It's the difficulty of making a private/state economy (still, big props for that !). - For instance you can just transfer the private money to the state coffers at any time, by ordering the building of a mining station (or the scrapping of private ships, but I don't remember if they get to keep the resources ?) Which means that there's no penalty of running your empire at 0% taxes (at least early on (?) - when it's the most important), which has a big impact on population growth and which trivializes a big chunk of the game. - Sometimes the game seems to be half stuck in the typical game economy systems. The mere fact, for instance, that money is something that matters at this scale (compared to our postmodern states where the government has total control over how much money it wants to print). But then it seems to be another precious resource instead, since you can exchange that money with other empires (or pirates) and everyone has the same money. But then there seems to have been a waste of opportunity to make money just another resource (think gold in pre-postmodern times), which could have allowed interesting gameplay, with freighters having to carry it to settle deals, and pirate (or state) attacks on money convoys...

    I highly suspect it is to save on processing power. Graphically it is likely easy on a zoomed in system, but keeping a log of the 2000 stars and up to 12 odd planets each system so when you zoom they are where they're supposed to be, will use quite a bit of calc power. I suppose an easier way would be to have a the types have a fixed speed so one could use ratios and then just utilise one planets position to map the rest whenever someone zooms in. That way it only has to keep track of 1 planet as a global process and do the calc realtime whenever zoomed with 1 simple ratio. It is a shame though as static systems are not immersive at all. I do prefer the moving planets. It may also be to fix the patrol AI systems too, or AI movement in general, to save on compute power. In DW U 1 you try to patrol or station warships they'd eventually get confused, never refuel, sometimes stop following the planet orbit etc in later game as the load gets super heavy. Also this is technically 3D whereas DW U 1 was 2D. A lot more data and vectors to process. Though today's tech should handle it well.

    The scale of time is just as impressive as the scale of size here. If you run the game at normal speed (avoiding 2x 4x speeds) for the preWarp era (up to Bubble Drives) you get the sense of how massive the playing field of the game actually is. And with this in mind, I thank the God of Automation in helping to deal with it all. LOL But you're right. Automation definitely feels more comfortable in DW2.
