Dissecting Al Ewing's Dissection of Loki

With the upcoming Disney+ show, I read the Al Ewing written Loki: Agent Of Asgard, a book set in the Marvel Now era that seems geared more for MCU fans and Tom Hiddleston's on-screen portrayal. With the upcoming Disney + show, I thought I'd give my verdict on this book (spoiler-free of course) and let you know if this series still holds up today now that Axis and Original Sin are a thing of the past.
I filmed this review a while ago, as you can probably tell from the background, so I hadn't refined my reviewing style and I wasn't using my current microphone. But hopefully this video is still enjoyable!

This was a great decade for Loki. First Journey Into Mystery and Young Avengers by by Kieron Gillen, then this book, and then the great mini in 2019 by Daniel Kibblesmith.

This was actually my first Marvel comic that I read (mainly due to the genderfluid aspects of Loki’s character, and I found I really really lobbied it and it was what lead me to find out more about the Young Avengers and their whole thing, a group that is without doubt one of my current favourites and one that really got me into the Marvel comics.

WOOF WOOF! It's review time, and we're looking at Loki: Agent of Asgard! I understand this might not be the most well-known run, so this is mostly spoiler free, besides the majority of the plot. If you liked this video, please remember to give it a thumbs up, and if you haven't already click that subscribe button and the bell notification! Hoping to have something a bit different for you next time! Doing some test footage later tonight! :)

I'm very new to comics and I loved Agent of Asgard but I'm honestly not really enjoying "events". I feel like they really interrupt the stories I'm reading (Thor and Loki from Stracynski's run onwards and Brubacker's Captain America) and make things really confusing because I'm only focusing on a few characters and don't know what is happening outside of that. It is really overwhelming at times.

I enjoyed this run a lot and I'm glad Al Ewing is getting the recognition he deserves from his Immortal Hulk run. It's a shame that there's so many great runs that get interrupted with crappy events. Another great Al Ewing run that I recommend to check out, besides Immortal Hulk, is his Ultimates run (it's not the "Ultimate Universe" team of The Ultimates, but rather a new team of heroes under the leadership of Captain Marvel in the main Marvel Universe that is formed after the events of Secret Wars).

I agree, but I'm thinking of maybe holding out for an Immortal Omni? Not sure haha. But I might check it out and see if it's for me, he seems to write really well :) I did overall enjoy Loki, I know I can often nitpick which can sway perspective haha. Thanks for checking out the video, Zak! :)

I recall really enjoying this run when I read it a few years ago. You get more mileage out of it if you did read Gillen's Journey Into Mystery run that preceded it, where Kid Loki came into the picture. Ewing has been slugging away at second string books like this for a few years before he got Hulk, and people have underestimated him. I agree it got bogged down by the events tying into it, but Ewing did what he could. It could have been much longer and probably more well known if they got longer to tell that opening arc and setup. I should eventually get this CC when i get the chance, it's gotten kinda scarce over here in the states.

Hey Dogg! I'm glad you liked this book, I did overall too, but yeah, maybe I should've read Gillen first, I've got the omni so I've got no excuse haha. Yeah, I feel sorry for writers that are trying to tell one story but have to chop and change because of an event (even though I can often enjoy the event). Ironically, had this been longer and got an Omni, it probably would have had more eyes on it, which is a bit of a shame. Thanks for watching mate :)

I echo your thoughts on event comics 100%. I'm just now reading Agent of Asgard for the first time in 2021 and the Axis/Original Sin stuff was the least interesting.

Hey Dogg! Thanks for watching :) It was definitely worth a read, but Complete Collections seem to be similar to Epics, so it may disappear and go OOP without warning :P And I know, I didn't expect this one to put the channel on the main page :P but at the end of the day, it's here for people who want to watch it, and I'll always be up for talking about a book :) as long as someone enjoys it, that's good enough for me :)

Sounds like a perfect example of the annoying side of event comics, and prioritising short-term sales figures over long-term story legibility :/ Not read this one, but I have been meaning to check out some Loki. I just got the Kieran Gillen stuff, have you read that? And if so how would this compare to that? Or if not, any plans to read it?

100% correct! But then again, I do often like events, maybe I'm just a hypocrite :P But with this book it just felt like switching from fifth gear back to first because someone else ran a red light haha. But I've got the Gillen omni, I haven't had chance to check it out yet, but it seems more steeped in Asgard, so it depends if you prefer Norse characters in their own setting, or on Earth. I normally prefer them being on Earth, but I do plan to read it (at some point haha) I just need a break from Ye Olde language for now :P What you reading at the moment? :)

@@MaddoggComics Haha it's ok to like them as long as you understand they are harmful... kind of like alcohol, or a deep fried battered Mars bar :P At the moment I'm paused on my read of Invincible maybe 2/3rds of the way through compendium 2... I don't want to get too much further since I don't yet have compendium 3 and it shot up in price on Amazon recently. I can play the waiting game for it to drop. I'm also half way through Doomsday Clock, and just started reading the New X-Men omni (I finally got it! :D So happy!)

Might pass on this one I like him more as a side character then a main focus driven character and I hate when marvel just clutter their comics with events most runs I’ve read from marvel have like 1 or 2 pointless tie ins they do it all the time so annoying

Hey Dogg! I think I'm the same tbh, the best part of this book were when he was within a team and seeing how he interacted with the wider universe :) For me, I prefer when the tie ins are kept seperate and storylines don't have to stop and adapt, I think that's why I liked Flashpoint because most of the tie-ins were kept under the Flashpoint name :) Thanks for watching mate!
