This song was so popular and such a hit back in the 80s that once in a while a DJ at a dance club would throw it on. About 5 seconds in you would hear this chorus "AHHHH" from the crowd.

Amazing how changing the tempo totally changed the song. Not sure whose idea that was to slow it down but thankfully they did.

So good. It's funny how a song, a smell, a taste, a feeling will transport you back to a time and place when you first sensed it. This song always takes me to my high school years. Back then, we had this thing called the Columbia Record & Tape club. If you joined, you got 30 free cassettes of your choosing for 1 cent., then you bought one a month to fulfill your obligation. I must have filled out 10 of them and sent them in under different names and addresses, like my neighbors, family, vacant houses...they all came through at the same time. I had every Rush album produced up to that point. Whenever I hear this now, I think of laying on the floor with the stereo speakers on either side of my head, about six inches away and just marveling at the massive sound. Thanks for the memories Neil.

Neil bluntly said many times that Tom Sawyer always was a challenge to play correctly in concert. The time changes and complexity of so many Rush songs make them epic and timeless as time marches into the future.

It's a memorable earworm because it's infectious to listen to. There are effective changes in tempo, sweet sonic goodies, and this kind of free-wheeling style of playing that Rush really didn't do before. (Except The Spirit of Radio and Freewil) It's also a very visual kind of song. I listen to it and I can see the vast Mississippi River, grand steamboats, and all that imagery. It hits as a great song should.

I just thought of something. The line "the space he invades he gets by on you" could be a reference to the video game. hmmm...

What video is this, and what year is it from? Is this part of a longer video? I love anything I can find where Rush discusses their studio work! Are there other videos out there like this?

For me, at least, I consider the best Rush music to be the first 10 albums. In fact, if it doesn't say "Produced by Rush and Terry Brown" on the record sleeve, then I won't listen to it. Old Rush rules!
