Dispersed Camping in Colorado's Front Range

Rampart Range Road begins SW of Denver just outside of Sedalia.
The dirt road travels nearly 40 miles down to the Woodland Park area west of Colorado Springs. In this video, we'll show you a small portion of the nearly 100 designated dispersed campsites in the area around the USFS Flat Rocks Campground.

Stayed there this past weekend. Prices have gone up to $20 per night plus $10 per additional car. Management was nice, respectful and helpful. They were checking for OHV stickers on the trails. The site we were in was mostly clean and the fire pit and picnic tables were appreciated.

Something had to be done there, the lack of respect for public lands was taking it's toll. Been riding those trails for over 40 years. Wife and I went there this spring and was blown away that all the spots were were now reserved. We went down to Jackson Creek instead. Unless they changed the laws even with a OHV sticker stay off Rampart RD. Many years ago the trail I was on crossed Rampart road and required 500ft down the road to pick up the trail on other side, that's where the rangers were waiting to write tickets. And when I started license plating my bikes. There is a 'easy' trail that parallels Rampart rd if you don't have a plate. Another great video, thanks.

I agree with the fire rings. many wildfires are started by campfires. a big one happened in the area i like to go to, near the two hearted river in the upper peninsula of michigan. burned alot of homes, and really changed the landscape forever. great place to ride atvs as they have trails everywhere. the forest is greener and thicker then where your at here. i assume a easier climate and more rain is the cause, even though its farther north then you. great fishing, big pike.

The last couple summers I really enjoyed camping in this area. Views were amazing towards Pikes peak & I had wonderful cell service(sprint/T-Mobile). My brother who lives in the Springs would come join us with his family. There were times when it got a lil rowdy & campers sadly leaving some trash. Might head there in a couple days to checkout the changes. Appreciate it!!

I've been in several campsites in Colorado and I have noticed the locals coming out party and trashing up the place that's the reason right there the locals it's not the people that's out of town camping

I checked out the rampart range for camping this last spring and couldn’t find a single site that wasn’t littered with hundreds of shotgun, pistol, and rifle shells in addition to lots of other litter. Broken glass everywhere! One site had what looked like some hunter’s full camp abandoned from the previous hunting season. It’s a giant shooting range and apparently no one believes in policing their brass. There were also several people shooting all along the road. Not a peaceful site to be found. NOT my idea of a quiet, restful camping location. I’m a hunter and enjoy target shooting, but damn people, pick up after yourselves, respect the land and respect those who may follow you in using your site.

I would use Flat Rocks Campground as your destination for best directions. Most of these sites are within a couple of miles of it. You’ll pass dozens more on the way from WP.

Road trip from Michigan to visit my girlfriend in Castle Rock and camping in Rampart, is regular tent camping ok? I saw the bears signs.

Carry a 12 guage, rotate buck and slugs and you'll be fine, you're more likely to hear the traffic of woodland park than run into a bear with all the shooting that goes on recreationally

Ok, so $10-$15 fee. So is there a discount for senior pass and how does the contractor collect the money...a self pay tube at info boards, or in person..cash or checks, cc? Max stay length?

There wasn't good info last time I was up there. No self pay stations yet. I assume it is still 14-days for max stay. I've only seen longer stays allowed in the San Juan National Forest in SW Colorado.

Not true James Smith. I rode and camped the Rampart range area for 30 years before i finally aged out. There was NEVER any issues with trash until homeless meth heads figured out there were basically no cops and it was free to camp (and trash) the area.

Allowing people to stay more than 14-days and lack of patrols is a big part of the problem in the front range. I don't know that paying for a dispersed site will stop the weekend drinkers from tossing their bottles at rock formations unless somebody is collecting license plate info and following up when there is a mess left behind.

OHV registration sticker cost is what built and maintains the area. OHV registration revenue builds and maintains hiking trails, parks plus funds training programs for new families coming into the sport. Denverites looking for a cop-free party zone, combined with drug addicts and all the newcomers to Colorado who have no respect for our public lands. It's why they elect politicians who constantly push to close them down and turn it a National monuments with keep out signs.

please correct this title that this is about one specific campground. Also, "concessionaires" does not mean "management has changed" - it means who is hired to carry out the daily maintenance tasks. Also look at the USFS site always before believing a youtuber.

People good folks camp and clean up …. bad folks live and trash and destroy …. Sure looks like more bad folks are living in forest not camping … takes a ranger two minutes to look at five camps and determine if people are living & trashing …. It’s not rocket science do your job and people do your part… simple.
