    It’s officially midnight here in California and ends the last and final operating day of Splash Mountain. Despite it’s touchy politics and controversy. The ride represented a significant a piece in millions of children’s childhoods. And Disney has yet again stripped us of a little more of their magic. Doing exactly opposite of what they promise. I’m sure the princess and the frog ride will be great, but destroying such an incredible ride in the process isn’t just. Rest in peace Splash Mountain 1989-2023. I hope we can all still find our laughing place.

    A beautiful time capsule, when Eisner and Wells were at the height of their powers. The Disney Renaissance was right around the corner. The Second Generation of Imagineers was at the height of their powers. The parks were flourishing with a second wind of new ideas. It's all just a memory now

    Disney needs to take their music, more specifically this, and score it for an orchestra as "Splash Mountain Suite" so that the music and legacy isn't forgotten. I've noticed that Disney's music department is starting to market their music from movies and shows and turn them into suites for professional orchestras to play. I'm sure many have seen the "live to film" concerts where they play the movies and play the music live.

    The thing about Splash Mountain I will miss most is just hearing “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah” around the park. There wouldn’t have been anything wrong with keeping the song in the park’s music loops, at least. It’s such a fun and uplifting song that it should live on forever.

Just because we don’t want a change doesn’t mean you can call people racist and stop telling us to grow up when the people that made this change are just adults complaining and moping for absolutely no reason why didn’t you protest against this ride 31 years ago yeah they didn’t back then so what makes it racist now

    Haha. Thank you! I even watched the movie and found nothing wrong with it. It takes place during Reconstruction era and never once mentions slavery. It’s most likely gonna close within the next few months tho since it’ll take a while for them to redo the mountain, getting rid of all the current stuff in the ride, finish all the new scenes in the ride and installing the new animatronics; I’d say we have probably like 6 months left of the ride being open but who knows, hopefully Disney will tell up when it’s closing, 2024 is when the princess and the frog retheme is planned to open

    Cant imagine riding this and my first thought is to get super mad and triggered. But I guess some people are just built differently. Ironic that people who are sad that the ride is getting removed are being told to grow up, even though this happened bc a bunch of adults couldn’t find anything to do but complain. Is the movie racist? Unquestionably, but this ride transcends the movie and is in its own category.

    I agree, but the movie isn't racist. I watched it a few years back and found nothing wrong with it. It doesn't "glorify slavery" as some people say. The movie takes place during reconstruction era and does not mention slavery itself. Not only that, but it was progressive for its time, featuring a relationship between a white boy and a kindhearted black man. The voice of Brer Bear on the ride also uses the profit from splash mountain towards African American actors. The worst thing I can think of is the tar-baby, but that certainly doesn't deserve the meltdown it's gotten. Keep in mind that these were African-American slave folktales being told to and observed by Joel Chandler Harris.

  • @Robb1977

    @Robb1977

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@foxiewithamoxie oddly the tar baby is directly taken from folklore of certain African groups and was adapted by slaves in the Americas into English. Tar was originally sap from a rubber tree, and instead of the anthropomorphic animals, it was gods. Song of the south's greatest strength is that it could be used to bring attention to how African stories were passed down through slaves and became a huge part of American culture. But unfortunately, as a product of the 1940s, the song of the south suffered the rose-tinted glasses of the "old southern charm" with the plantation social structure being something depicted as unrealistically idyllic. Even in the reconstruction era, they weren't great places to work. I think the biggest issue with song of the south is Disney's desire to avoid confrontation and possibly being seen as bad. They have no problem working with genocidal governments to make propaganda or underpaying CGI artists, but they won't acknowledge or use their troubled past as a learning tool. By keeping the "forbidden" status, the film's positive merits are forgotten, and it's potential for teaching people about how African Americans shaped American folk tales and especially the Disney method of storytelling, they devalue the contributions of African Americans even more. The decision to change it to princess and the frog was extremely calculated to avoid this sort of accusation, but it still detracts from the potential message. When Song of the South was made (1946) James Baskett (Uncle Remus) wasn't allowed into the screening theater. Yet his work contributed to one of the most successful Disney movies ever, doing only slightly worse in its box office than snow white did. This and its re-releases have been extremely limited and edited, often removing all of the live-action segments and large portions of animation. Song of the south is multi-layered, with its literal story about a boy who learns moral lessons from uncle Remus, despite racial difference and tensions, the lessons themselves which are all stories about characters which were adapted from ancestral stories from Africa, and the meta-story about how that sort of thing shaped the company that Disney is today. Splash mountain could have used an update, but it didn't need a re-theming. Song of the South doesn't necessarily need a re-release, but out of any film in the Disney vault, that's the one that needed to be re-made. Remove the misinformed view of the old south, and make it a story about how people like uncle Remus shaped American thought, and how we shouldn't forget about that sort of thing just because it's uncomfortable at first. unfortunately, none of that will happen. handling such a heavy topic would be nearly impossible in Disney's current state, and there's no reason to believe it would make them the profit it desires because it doesn't have the nostalgia value. Song of the South in popular thought now is the epitome of "old racist Disney cartoons" and the reason and meta behind it are lost. I hate to sound pretentious like this, but I don't know how to explain it otherwise.
