Disney XD's DuckTales: Lucky Gladstone Gander vs. Donald Duck

Фильм және анимация

Who gets stuck with all the bad luck? Not Donald's super lucky cousin, Gladstone. This is easily one of my favorite Ducktales side characters, and pretty much the opposite of Donald in every way.

I liked that they made Gladstone smug and selfish but not COMPLETELY heartless. When Scrooge hands over Donald to Liu Hai, Gladstone seems legitimately shocked that Scrooge would sell Donald out, and even asks how they're going to save him. It's a minor touch, and probably one that will get completely missed by a lot of people, but it does show that while his impossible good luck may have made him smug and entitled, he isn't evil or a completely bad person at heart.

I like the very end of the episode where Gladstone sees his relatives leaving with newfound/renewed disgust towards him and admiring Donald, and briefly having a moment of self-reflection where he considers trying to make something of himself rather than coasting on his luck, only to have a beautiful woman show up in a golden yacht she's offering to sell to him for 20 dollars as a tax write-off. That's Gladstone's entire life in a nutshell; he basically has no skills or experience besides living off his luck and enjoying himself, because the world is incapable of giving him a challenge. His luck actively makes him a worse person than he could be.

Mujtaba Walji Makes sense, Gladstone is clearly a foil to this version of Louie; getting success and fortune with near zero effort and all the time to enjoy it is, as mentioned, Louie's ideal life. And yet Louie sees how insufferable that makes Gladstone and how admirable Donald's tenacity in the face of misfortune is.

It's funny, but at the same time, the ending kinda infuriated me. Like, Donald both saved his life AND proved he was the better person for not having to rely on luck, and he still learns nothing?! What an asshole! The least Gladstone could've done was show a bit humility by declining the offer.

Nintendotron64 part of the point, everything is literally handed to gladstone, whether he wants it or not, it is nearly impossible for him to improve because he is never offered challenges to test his character. Men are built off of their efforts and accomplishments, but gladstone never had to try at anything. He is a hollow person because his life is hollow

I remember shortly after seeing this episode, someone had an observation I rather liked. Gladstone isn't blessed with Good Luck. He's cursed with Good Luck. The world just constantly gives him what ever he needs, and so he ends up never truly amounting to anything. Scrooge and Donald, OTOH, have to work hard for everything. Donald's bad luck keeps hitting him, but it's made him a better duck in the long run. One who never knows when to give up. And Scrooge learned to work hard from an early age, until he went from shining shoes for a dime he couldn't even spend, to the richest duck in the world.

Part of me wonders if someone linked Donald and Gladstones lucks when they were little. That maybe all the luck Donald should be getting is somehow being sent to Gladstone which is why he always has good things happen to him and why Donald always has bad things happen. Other than that, I liked the implication that Donald is Scrooges favorite nephew because of his work ethic. Scrooge is all about working hard for what you get and no one matches his drive the way Donald does. The poor guy gets little reward for his hard work but what he does get, he treasures. That is pretty sweet.

  • @Woodclaw

It depends on which version of the characters you consider. In the "Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck" it was implied that Gladstone's luck comes from his mom (the sister of Donald's dad) that was equally unbelievably lucky. Other versions implied that Gladstone is so lucky because Donald is so unlucky, that the two of them act as some kind of "universal balance system" of luck and bad luck. One of the most in depths idead, explored by a couple of Italian stories, is that Donald is in fact the luckier of the cousins, because despite all his failures he has been able to build some solid foundations to his own life, whereas Gladstone rely on an endless series of lucky strokes than might run dry in a heartbeat.

Francesco Castelli I have this notion that their common ancestor, Cornelius Coot, the founder of Duckburg, had some complicated relationship with a Native tribe, one where he eventually did something REALLY good for them, then another thing that was REALLY bad, like cheating them out of their land, but also saving their lives from potential bigoted murderers. For this, the shaman both blesses and Curses Coot, “there will be days of great fortune for you, and they will be good days, indeed. But for every good day, you will have a day of equally bad fortune, and they will be horrid days, indeed. And you will pass these through two separate lines, and there will always be a descendant who knows only good luck and one who knows only bad. But the bad will also be blessed with indomitable Willpower, and the good will be cursed with Meaningless existence”, thus ensuring neither suffers to the point of despair, or abuses his good fortune.

Fredrik Dunge The Mythology of the Toad God also suggests that he could offset Gladstone’s luck just enough to capture him by taking advantage of his naivety to start the feeding process. Normally he would only quit when all the victim’s luck was gone, but Gladstone’s seems to be bottomless, a feast that would last until he finally died of old age. It would be like a vampire who found someone with magical bone marrow that could make new corpuscles faster then the Vamp could fatally drain him.

I felt that Gladstone was underused in the original series. He's been in alot of comics, yet, he only appeared in TWO episodes, and while Rob Paulsen did an admirable job voicing him, he could've given him the kind of cockiness that he gave Raphael, or Yakko Warner. Also, I hope Gladstone appears in more than just two episodes this time.

You have to be careful with that kind of plot, it has to make sense why they need to pretend to be that stupid and they can't have actually caused any real problems for the main characters from doing it. Then of course after its revealed you either have to completely change the character or give a very good reason why they still have to play the part.

This is currently my favorite episode in the new DuckTales, partly because it's Donald-centric, partly because I feel the writers nailed Gladstone, and partly because I loved the villain in this. Totally a villain I could see show up in the Disney Duck comics. But also because the climax could be a great level for a videogame DuckTales modeled after this DuckTales, and I'd love to be playing as Donald racing against Gladstone Gander on a Super Mario Bros.-esque obstacle course.

akane saotome “Life and Times Of Scrooge McDuck” contradicts that. We meet his mother in 1905, who just barely avoids getting run over by a little motor car that Scrooge and his sisters were taking to the top of “Kill Mule Hill”, where he planned on building his money bin. Hortense Meets (and falls for), Quackmore for the first time, while the future Mrs. Gander finds a diamond ring in one of the broken eggs the near miss caused her to drop. She has Gladstone’s curly downy ‘hair’, only long locks, and fantastic luck.

I own this comics, so yes, i know that. But this don't contradicts anything. When his mother Daphne Gander die, it was Matilda MCDuck who adopted him, she is even listed on Disney wiki as his adoptive mother. I'm not sure why Rosa never show that relation on his Family Tree but it was Carl Barks idea. Also, Luke the Goose was at first Gladstone father, but that was later change and his father name is Goosetave Gander now. Some version of the Tree (non Barks or Rosa) even make ludwig von drake Matilda's husband And on unrelated note, Rosa seems to dislike new DT, so please don't count on his canon too much, I don't think it's relevant to this show. According to Rosa Scrooge die in 1967, so...

@Sergio Andrade Hmmmm... I guess this was all BEFORE Scrooge McDuck was created because Walt said that Donald took his mother's name, but his mother's last name wasn't "Duck" but "McDuck." So I don't know. Walt Disney was the original creator of Donald Duck and Ludwig von Drake, but Carl Barks was the creator of Scrooge McDuck and created most of the rest of Duckburg and the Donald Duck universe so I don't really know which would be considered "canon" since Ludwig wasn't included in Don Rosa's family tree (which took most of its inspiration from Barks): www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=imgres&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwj187TgxPvfAhUPZd8KHcynCcIQjRx6BAgBEAU&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.retroist.com%2F2009%2F04%2F01%2Fdonald-duck-family-tree%2F&psig=AOvVaw3YYTvwQG7WUihNzMqrdGmd&ust=1548045428392260 Hmm...didn't know that about the European comics, but I did know that Carl Barks and Don Rosa stated that Gladstone's birth parents were Daphne (I didn't know about Luke Goose being Gladstone's father since Don Rosa showed him only to be Gus' father). I think your analysis of Gadstone as a foil to Donald is spot on. Might I add that Gadstone is also a big foil to Scrooge. Gadstone never had to work for a penny in his life where as Scrooge had to work harder than anyone else since he was 13 to make his fortune. There was no luck involved which is why Scrooge gets offended when he is called lucky; it implies he didn't earn the money of his own merits. It shows the difference between Gadstone and Scrooge which makes us respect Scrooge more while at the same time showing how little real character Gadstone has; he is the opposite to Scrooge in every way in terms of personality and outlook on life.

Maybe someone already said this but when the kids lean against the window, that too is a reference to Vegas's Strip; the Stratosphere hotel. Even is as adults, we lean against the slanted windows at the top of the hotel. It's trippy and takes your breath away.

Seaniccus, just spotted. Gladstone was bad guy in two comics I went through across 150-250 comic compilations I had. Not in none. Still, he used his luck to provide Donald with lucky day/week at least four times.

I love this episode. It's honestly my favorite thus far. Because of that bit at the climax. I struggle sometimes with feeling like things are pointless. I think back to this scene sometimes. "You never had the common sense to give up before, why start now?" It has honestly helped me push on. Thanks Donald Duck. I never really cared about you until this show, but I've become a huge fan of you now.

i have a small collection of Barks comics and in one of the ones i have, Donald the kids and Scrooge discover Gladstone having a dark secret, his own number one dime, a dime he earned by his own hard labor. and i remember getting a comic on my first day doing free comic book day when there was a duck comic where Gladstone had a curse where he was unlucky on his birthday. both are pretty funny, and i have other Gladstone comics in the collection too, but those two were always my favorite, because both made him seem like someone who still has his own secrets.

Finally got to see this episode air on Disney Channel. In Sweden he is called Alexander Lucas. Don´t know the history to why, I guess it was a fancy name. I have read some stories with him. I really despise him. I like the old Ducktales episode with him. Incase you want to see it spoilers ahead but it´s a good twist. Alright here I go. So Magica uses Gladstone to steal Scrooge Lucky Dime but when he does all his luck goes away and suddenly Scrooge business goes down. It´s kind of funny and ironic.

2017 Toad Liu collaborated with 1987 Magica Despell in Mulan, fun fact. Speaking of, it seems that Magica was not the only Villain left out of the Intro after all, Toad Liu wasn’t there either, of all the villains seen in the Reboot.
