Disney's Upscale Hollywood Restaurants

Ойын-сауық

I like to do the occasional video where I take a look at the history, not of an attraction, but rather behind it. Disney's lands, restaurants and attractions are strongest when they draw from real world history and culture and this can provide a lot of depth behind them. You're not just dining in the Hollywood Brown Derby in Hollywood Studios, but you're engaging with the traditions and Hollywood culture of the past that emanates throughout the restaurant. Join me today as we take a look at Disney's upscale Hollywood restaurants, tracing the history behind them and understanding their cultural significance, allowing their overall experience to be richer.

For as much as Disney is credited with bringing fantasy worlds to life, I find myself more impressed by how well they create real places from the past. It’s why world showcase was one of my favorite areas in Disney. However recently we are starting to see these areas removed and replaced with fantasy lands.

However, it’s a smart move for a quick buck not one for long term financial success

Another interesting video! I will say this is what I miss about current Disney is theming. When back in Eisner and Wells's time as CEO they can put that much effort into working with imagineers on theming when designing ( parks, upscale restaurants, shops and hotels) and now with Iger and Chapek it is all about slapping a IP on an existing ride and/or restaurant.

Because as I have stated before Bob Chapek has no creative vision (at least as far as Parks are concerned) and from what I have seen has no respect of Disney Imagineers. I miss imagineers for example like Joe Rohde who was a driving force between the authenticity and attention to detail that are everywhere in the Animal Kingdom.

I parked and walked through the Boardwalk on my way to Flying Fish the other night and I had never realized how interesting and well themed the hotel was until then. I had never approached it from the front, but to see the lobby propped up on a hill with the driveway symmetrically flanking the portes-cochère allowed it to feel grand and exciting when walking up. It had also been my first time exploring the lobby and I saw so much cultural context popping out from the props, paintings and architecture throughout, that it made me realize how much contemporary Disney hotels are missing. It would never be an interesting throwback to Coney Island, but would instead be a slightly more themed Hilton.

The immense care that they took recreating both spaces is honestly something to be praised. Right down to the wallpaper, color palletes, to the light fixtures. One of the last things I got to do with my grandma now over a decade ago was on our Disney trip just me and her went to eat at The Brown Derby while the rest of the group went to prime time because we wanted a GOOD meal and to take the chance to dress up a little bit. When we went in, my grandmother was taken back a little bit and started tearing up which o had no idea why. It was during that meal that I learned that during the war when we was in LA working with the military hospital, one of the girls she lived with was a seamstress working at Warner Bros and took my grandmother along to show her the sets at the studio and many nights at the Brown Derby. My grandmother was a troubled and somewhat complicated person, and sadly I don’t have all that many good memories of/with her. But that night will always be one of my favorites. Thank u for this video

Dining at Disney has always been one of my favorite parts of my trips, no matter the price range. Imagineering seems to know that since the sit down locations are simultaneously a place where you will be a captive audience to sit and look at details while also not having to make every space usable like a queue line is, they can cram it with so much atmosphere and fun references to the theme they’re going for. I had just as much fun sitting in the DCA Starbucks and picking up on the Silver Lake Sisters lore the other day as I did eating at the Carthay Circle restaurant a couple trips back and enjoying the pristine vibes of that. Not to mention that Disney is largely very good at food overall.

The Disney rocked during the Micheal Eisner and Frank Wells era. After that sadly not so much especially after Frank Wells was killed in a helicopter crash during a ski trip in 1994. That was until the death of Frank Wells, which set the Imagineering division back once again. As for Bob Iger while some will say he accelerated the company growth and made it into the absolute behemoth it is today. Acquisition is in some ways less difficult than creating new stuff and in doing so Iger has only wanted what is best for Iger and he has milked the Disney money vaults for about all their worth. So while some may say Iger was the better CEO, especially once the disastrous second half of Eisner’s tenure in factored. Eisner and Wells were by far the more important CEOs.

The next time we go to Disney in September will be the last time until they learn to shape themselves, but we will totally be going to the Brown Derby when we go to Hollywood. It sounds like a fun dining experience! While they are really declining in ride and land quality, Disney is really good in terms of food. On the topic of nicely themed restaurants, I really love the visuals and atmosphere of Be Our Guest, though I will definitely say it’s a very overpriced restaurant. I remember in my last time to Islands of Adventure, I walked into the circus restaurant in Seuss Landing. Not for the food (I’ve heard bad things about it), but for the theming and the interesting circus antics on the ceiling. I’m not sure if it’s a good thing or bad thing…

The theming in Be Our Guest is great, but I agree that it's far over-priced for what you're getting. I haven't been since before they introduced the prix fixe menu though, and I've only heard the value has gone down since. To me, Islands of Adventure has the worst theme park food in Florida. Mythos and Confiscos are alright if you order the right dish and the Three Broomsticks is decent, but otherwise the place is a minefield. Circus McGurkus, Cafe 4, and Comic Strip Cafe are abysmal. I would genuinely say that the City Walk Burger King is a better alternative. I can't speak for Burger Digs or Thunder Falls Terrace, but I'm inclined to think that those aren't much better either.

It isn't really a legend, it's fairly well-documented as dozens of them survived and were able to tell the story afterward. There's a lovely museum up in Donner Pass if you ever get to visit that has a lot of great info on it.

Muppet Vision is great, probably one of my favorite attractions in all of Disney. Disney needs to integrate the Muppets more, imagine if we got the Muppet Movie Ride today as a tribute to the GMR lol

I really don't see much more of the Muppets coming to the parks, at least not through attractions. Maybe a show here or there, but I think that the Regal Eagle Smokehouse is the last we're going to see for a while.

I've been to Brown Derby a couple of times....while I love the atmosphere, the food and service have been just "average". People also don't dress up, (flip flops and oversized grubby t shirts and even pajamas!) so it really doesn't confer the experience I was hoping for given the price. Topolino's is a bit better , in terms of service and food, but many of the patrons look like they should be dining in McDonald's....so that's a bummer. I wish these restaurants enforced some kind of dress code. It's probably hard, with one of them being in a theme park. People just don't seem to have respect for the eyeballs of other diners these days!

A dress code would be impractical and quite uncomfortable in a park, so I think it more than makes sense why there isn't one. If I'm going to Flying Fish or California Grill, I'll definitely dress up a bit though.

I’ve stopped eating at Carthay because of their menu changes post-panini. They used to serve classics like steak, duck, chicken, fish, etc. Now it’s a strange Asian Latin fusion with really lackluster options. :(

I don't understand the disdain for Runaway Railway. It's a fun ride and I think it does fit thematically with the park. They used the retro look of Mickey and Minnie and the cartoon story. And I was one who did ride The Great Movie Ride as a teen and really can't recall a thing about it. When I watch the videos of it, most of the movies are movies I have never seen, don't have a desire to see, or have watched and didn't enjoy. So as the target audience of those movies age and eventually die, there's less appeal. Could they have updated it with newer movies? Sure, but I'm sure many would complain about IP.

Though I agree Runaway Railway is a very fun family ride and definitely captures the feel of the cartoons; I think we could have had space for both rides. Hollywood Studios was about celebrating the golden age of movies and TGMR did just that, along with a ride format I'd argue is on par with Jungle Cruise if not better. RR doesn't really have any thematic reason to be in the Chinese Theater though.

  • @NinthShinigami

    @NinthShinigami

MMRR has no thematic sense in the park. It doesn’t fit in a park that’s about experiencing the movies. MM wouldn’t even fit the old Hollywood Studios theme. Most of those films that were in GMR are films that have been highly praised and believe it or not are still talked about to this day and are referenced in many movies and even used as lessons in filmmaking by college professors and film enthusiasts on KZread. Like you, I sometimes find myself not enjoying some of these older films like I would enjoy a modern action film, but I could certainly respect and admire their effects on the film industry and the art of film in general. I’d say there would still be many people that love those movies like Mary Poppins, Wizard of Oz, Alien, films that have gone down as classics and are favorites among many people. I agree that maybe GMR could’ve used new scenes at some point. It would have maybe helped it give a longer lifespan. However, MMRR, while not necessarily a bad ride, I think is semi decent. It really is just bland tacky cartoon wackiness that is not fulfilling in any substantial way. I guess MMRR got the whacky part right but it follows no clear narrative and never really feels like a runaway train. Just a sightseeing tour in different areas of the Mickey Mouse cartoons. The transitions in between scenes is very jarring (you go from the Old West, to a carnival? And then to a sewer? And then to Daisy’s dancing class? Huh?). The trackless system is underutilized (no unexpected movements and the ride vehicles or tracks don’t follow along with any story beats, besides the swaying motion in Daisy’s room so points for that one), there are no effects to immerse you into the experience (is it really that hard to put like two fans set on high in the tornado scene to simulate the tornados wind? Or vibrating seats in the jackhammer scene when it already vibrates at the end of the ride?). The 2 1/2 D tech is really just advanced projections that don’t even look that impressive. All of this is imo ofc and I respect your opinion on MMRR. I hope you can understand the points I made and respect my views as well…

I cannot speak for others but I don’t believe that Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway was a worthy replacement of Great Movie Ride. Also it is the fact that Disney could have done so much more with The Great Movie Ride and a missed opportunity especially with all the new IP's they acquired like Marvel, Star Wars and 20TH Century Fox they could have added newer movies and maybe even expanded the building and put more scenes with more animatronics and screens into it. That’s what should’ve been done since allegedly there is such a huge part of the show building that was not used when the Great Movie Ride was converted to Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway. They absolutely had the room for 3 more show scenes and then some; which really makes no sense; seeing how the Great Movie Ride which is based in Disney's Hollywood Studios could have illustrated their new IP's. In closing while I do not disdain Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway I just feel it would have been great as another addition to Hollywood Studios, instead of replacing the iconic Great Movie Ride. Disney could have created the Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway at another location. Seeing how Disneyland Park Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway building is larger and has room for a few additional scenes just shows Disney knew they need to do better on the next version.

What? MMRR definitely does not utilize any classic style for Mickey or the characters. Their character design is from 2013 and emulates the Canadian studios that became prominent on Cartoon Network. The Great Movie Ride is not about targeting audiences through relevant IP, nor should any Disney park be aiming to do so. The attraction was created to celebrate cinema and explore a variety of interesting film genres, all the while covering significant films that influenced the industry in one way or another.

Why would you go to upscale restaurant, when you've been sweating in the park? I feel like the upscale restaurants were added by Eisner as appeal to adults but kids don't want to eat at the Brown Derby. I don't see these lasting much longer in an effort to save money and give increasingly cheaper experiences. You could also look into the Ziegfeld Theater that was beautiful art deco but also torn down for a corporate building.

Disney is dead people. I also find it silly that people still make videos about the theme parks. I am from Canada and have been to both parks several times. It's a lot of money for an experience that isn't there anymore. That Disney experience died several years ago. In my opinion Universal Studios is now the new king of theme parks. Chanells like this or Adam the woo, Tim Tracker, Justin Scarred etc will need to find new content

Umm guy, this channel does way more than just Disney lol. In fact some people despise this channel because they think Poseidon is a Disney hater and Universal shill, but he’ll even do some international theme parks. Personally, I agree on your statement of Universal being the new king, but I think Epic Universe will really get that message out there. I still love Disney, but cannot deny the quality of the experience has overall deteriorated. I hope a resurrection or revival of sorts is in order for Disney in the near future… who knows, we could have two kings. I haven’t lost that hope…
