This was a great theory (even though it was very dark...though I tend to love dark theories) It's crazy how a real life event that happened 30 years after could help explain parts of the movie and your theory!

Right? This was NOT where I expected this theory to go when I started the quest for Dumbo's father!

I agree with The Pink Elephant one, because watch the Pink Elephant "trip " again. At first it starts out with trippy circus elephants but then the Pink Elephants appear in busy fast moving cars and trains. I think while drunk out of his mind; him and Tim got ran over by busy traffic by a road near the circus. The Mum is then put down for being a "dangerous animal " and they met each other again in heaven.

I think you should do an Alice in Wonderland theory!! (Unless you don't want to)

I actually didn't watch Dumbo for the fist time until I was a teenager so no CHILDHOOD memories ruined here. Although I've got to say this makes the movie make way more sense. lol

I’ve actually NEVER watched Dumbo....though I’m planning on one day watching every single Disney movie because.....I don’t even know, I just want to. Also, no, I’m not a four year old who’s gotten their mother to write this XD.

WAIT. DISNEY PROOF! There's an old Silly Symphony where a stork arrives with lambs for all the lamb mothers, except one mom, she has no child and is left out, until looking in the bag and seeing the stork brought a baby tiger. She takes it, even though the stork explains it belongs in Africa, she raises it on her own because real mothers love their children no matter what they end up being. Maybe this was a reoccurring Disney theme back then!!!

That was "Lambert the Sheepish Lion", a great little short. When I was a kid, the version of Dumbo I watched was recorded off tv (The Wonderful World of Disney), and "Lambert" was shown before it.

Please make a video about the talking animals in Disney movies. Why, for example, can the mice talk in "Cinderella" but none of the others can? Why can the animals understand Snow White 100%? Why can Scuttle talk but none of the other land and sea animals can in "The Little Mermaid"?

Don't watch this? ... I watched this. I honestly liked this very much. Dumbo was never a happy film for me growing up, yet I watched it so so much anyway. This theory actually makes a whole lot of sense.

Same, my mother actually didn't want me to watch it because she thought it was devastating (I watched at a friend's house as a kid anyway), and though I found it sad, it was mostly confusing. So this theory makes it a lot more sense, while keeping the sadness in the movie.

Dumbo was drawn to look like a human baby.

There's a place for both - I think modern films, made as true as possible to the original old fairy tales would be interesting, not sure exactly how dark any director would dare to go, though. I like the lighter Disney versions but sometimes you just crave something almost pitch black, you know?

This gave me the feels. I gotta write a paper on this for class now and make everyone else have feels!

Huh I never even thought about something like that being associated with a cute little elephant.

About his mom during the scene where they take her away, don't they usually put down circus animals that display aggressive or mad behavior? Maybe that's why we see her with dumbo in the back of the train, because she had been killed and was waiting for Dumbo. There's been cases of elephants from circuses that get slaughtered for bad behavior, so it made me think. Please tell me your thoughts on this!!

I'm cautiously excited for the live action version but what I'm not looking forward to is the pink elephant scene. And we're talking Tim Burton here so you know it's going to be on another level of fucked up. I can already see it haunt my dreams.

Wow... lots to say: 1) The DETAIL put into this!!! How much research did you do!? 2) This was very, VERY, elaborate, and I doubt anybody else would have thought this way 3) Although this is an extremely sad thing, this could reveal some odd findings about the Disney universe. We do know that Disney puts a TON of detail, but do you think they knew all about this? Or was it just a coincidence?

Well, it started of with the question of who could his father be (hoping to answer why his ears were so big), and then it just plummeted downhill the more I dug into the topic. I did find that Dumbo is based off of prototype for a moving book toy, so it's impossible to find the original source to compare any note - but I'd say a few things had to be known to Disney. He's from Kansas City, so loads of potential for travelling carnivals and side show attractions to see an elephant like Dumbo, but, who can say for sure? The crows, though, he definitely had to have an inkling about them. I refuse to believe an entire team of writers, artists, and directors never mentioned the superstition!

Dumbo absolutely destroyed me as a child. I cried gallons of tears over it. For some reason this actually made me feel better thinking he was no longer a slave to the circus and him and his mama were together and happy never to be separated again.

Animal cruelty was and should always be "controversial". Disney wanted to expose how circuses treat elephants. Speaking of which, Mrs. Jumbo was based on a real circus elephant who turned on her abusive trainers.

Dumbo was already disturbing enough without this theory, and it makes me cry every time but it’s still one of my favorites

I grew up on watching Dumbo until I was 6, I loved the movie so much. Yet this theory doesn't even make me the slightest bit sad. Your theories are amazing btw, Imma watch more of them right now.

I could never stand to watch Dumbo all the way through in one entire sitting. I knew there was something MORE depressing than there already was...DAMN!! ☆ -makes sense to me. Great video!

I always figured the reason Dumbo took so long to be born was because elephants are known to have ridiculously long gestation periods, usually close to two years. Though your theory could hold some water. There are a lot of things that make sense. I wonder why Asian elephants can't breed with African elephants though. Maybe it has to do with how mutations affected them in the evolution process.

I know this is old but... Some species come with a Lethal Genetic Factor, there might be a link with that and African and Asian elephants. Maybe? e.g. certain types of chinchilla can never be bred together because of this. That being if both parents have said lethal gene, it often causes terrible problems and most commonly death in the embryonic stage. White chinchillas or Velvet Chinchillas, to give an example

Some animals also branch off from their original groups and get to the point where they can't interbreed easily or at all with another species, even though in theory they should be able to. It's because of the chromosomes not matching up properly, if they do at all. The lethal genetic thing can happen when certain genes combine, or when an offspring is given two copies of a gene that then produces fatal results (but carriers suffer no ill effects) - such as two horses with the same, certain pattern producing a foal with lethal white syndrome.

You just stated soooo much reasons, why I actually never really liked the movie. The main thing, being is his mom, locked up almost the entire film and everytime you see her, she's not only crying, bc she just wants to be with her baby, no she's also in chains, barely able to move. It's just so horrible and sad.

That's sad, but I can handle it! Not like he died of radiation poisoning.

I absolutely love your videos! I especially like this one because I think it makes "Dumbo" make a little more sense. Even though the theory itself is darker than usual, I think it actually improves on the movie. Good job!

This is a very well theory! But i was thinking, i know you said the movie could have taken place over only a few days, but what i think is that it could take place over a few weeks maybe: cause think about it, the circus workers DO have to load up a bunch of animals and props onto the train/train cars, I'm assuming doing all that would take around many hours cause i assume they have to wake up early? And circus trains do travel slowly, if they travelled fast, the animals would be knocked over/ laying on the ground. And the whole ' elephant prymid ' scene, they would have to train the elephants to stand on the ball and try not too fall off, but its my own personal thinking

“Don’t watch this” I watch it at 3 am.

I never really liked Dumbo, so it's not such a sad thing for me, but that actually makes a lot of sense, now that I think about it.

And my childhood is gone. But hey, I heard a similar theory about the Pebble and the Penguin. The happy ending of that movie never happened as it is a dying dream moments before Marina, Hubie and Rocko falls to their deaths.

This is my 2nd time watching this theory and both times I had the same question: what if Mrs. Jumbo is abused and locked away as a "mad elephant" because Dumbo died shortly after the stork dropped him off? What if Dumbo is a ghost who does not know he is dead, and spends the movie trying to reunite with his mother? Almost like a purgatory with Timothy as his guide to Heaven? In the end they are reunited because they are both dead. Mrs. Jumbo went mad with grief and died? Anyways, I loooooove your theories!!!!!!!! Thank you!

never thought of Dumbo in this way.... what if the getting drunk never happened but instead was his descent into madness/death.. i mean the alcohol could have just been a metaphor/tool for it.

It's dark that's for sure. You didn't put though, that an elephant has a pregnancy of 22 months. So she could have been pregnant for a long time seeing all the other mammals around her and she was depressed. Because the way I remember it...it sounds like Dumbo's father had passed and she was pregnant with Dumbo. Maybe that adds a bit more to the plot. Certainly the pink elephants part makes more sense now.

All I can say for sure is that Disney definitely had an eye for details and the bigger picture, and even if he WANTED to make a sad movie (similar to how sad Bambi is), he also knew that his company needed to generate revenue quickly or else they'd go under. You can almost see that tug-of-war between the creative and business sides of Disney at play in this movie.

Why all the warnings? This was a cool theory!

Honestly, I've been so traumatized by Dumbo as a kid, I completely refuse to watch Dumbo. So this is so gonna be good *just started at where the warning Where things will turn to the dark turn*

Great theory! But I don't think Disney intended for this all to be true. Especially if the first documented case was way after Dumbo! But the crows can be no coincidence.

Something to think about, Mrs. Jumbo might of been put to death due to being labeled mad. This happens with many animals, such as dogs with rabies and mad cows. So, the circus (which is pictured as cruel) might have just put here down due to being labeled mad. Its sad, but true.

This makes everything in the movie make so much more since!!

I know it says "Don't Watch", but I have a mission to watch all of your videos. I love Dumbo, but this movie has so many sad/disturbing moments. For a while my mom would never let me watch the movie, but while the movie is now controversial, I still love it.

In the seen where dumbo flys out of the building on fire it looks like he's flying out of HELL and at the end of the movie it looks like dumbo flying into heaven.

This is a really good video and the theory could be true. It's far from the last time Disney went down a similar theme and it would be incredibly poetic and fit with a lot of the undercurrent themes they touch on in the movie - like animal abuse

I always thought that's what happened anyway. When any animal, especially one as potentially dangerous as grown elephant, starts attacking like Dumbo's mom did, that animal gets put down. I understood that even as a small child. So when he went to go visit his mom, I almost cried because I thought that was him saying his last goodbyes before she was killed.

Oh I didn't even think of that angle, but it makes sense that Baby of Mine was a goodbye! lol, Dumbo was just the test before they really smacked us in the feels with Bambi's mother!

Dumbo kinda scared me in the first place. Though watching this and seeing the theory I have to say I'm less scared. It is sad yes.

I was like, "why the warning"." why would I care", "Surely there is nothing she could say about a movie I haven't watch in over 30 years that could get to me"... but at the of video i was crying D:

Technically that would mean that the clown who pushed the bottle of alcohol into the water would be the cause of dumbo's death
