Disney is ENDING Physical Media in Part of the World

Ойын-сауық

Disney DVDs, Blu-Rays and other physical media is coming to a halt in Australia. With Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 reportedly being the final physical release from the company, what exactly comes next for Disney fans in Australia? How will they watch upcoming content, and will this eventually happen to other parts of the world too?

To call this a bad idea is an understatement. As much as streaming rules our lives these days, we need physical media in order to preserve the movies and shows this company makes for future generations, good or bad. Denying an entire region of this ability is just plain wrong.

Fellow Australian here, I have a big reason why this is a bad idea. Not all parts of Australia have the necessary reception to use streaming services or digital versions. I have a friend who lives in a small countryside town, no reception at all, and she has this massive DVD collection, I’m talking a whole big shelf here. She and her family have clearly been relying on them for years and Disney was a big chunk of that collection, so I don’t know how she’ll react to Disney shutting down physical media. Disney own, like, half of the movie industry so that means you likely won’t be able to buy half the movies coming out these days. And as a collector myself, this is also soul crushing for me, especially since I’d take Blu rays over streaming any day of the week.

Some of the earliest memories I have is loading up a DVD (correction: begging my parents to load the DVD because I was incompetent) and seeing the wonderful Disney home DVD screen with my favorite fairy, Tinker Bell flying around and sparking wonder in my small 4-year-old brain. I feel sad that other kids might never be able to experience that.

I’ll be honest, as somebody who would usually prefer getting movies physically on DVD and Blu-ray, I really hope Disney doesn’t stop it in the United States. Sure, streaming can be a lot of fun these days, but if I want to know how something is made, I prefer to watch it physically, instead of having to look it up online or check to see if it’s on a streaming service.

Anymore, things such as DVD and CD sales have been decreasing in sales for years now. For example, Best Buy already discontinued selling CDs back in 2018, and Netflix will discontinue mailing DVDs next month. Hell I can’t even remember the last CD I bought, and I rarely buy films on DVD / Blu Ray unless I really love the film (my most recent two were The Bad Guys and Sonic 2, and definitely will buy Elemental)

This is legitimately really sad. Just realizing how even the simplest things, like buying a dvd, is becoming a relic or even a hassle. It feels like everything is being taken away from people nowadays. I hope this plan of theirs fails. It should. I’ve been a fan of Disney my entire life, but even I’m thinking they should just stop. Stop doing anything until they can refigure out what their company is supposed to be.

I really hope physical media has a vinyl-esque resurgence down the road, especially given that the big studios are removing shows and films infinitely on streaming, when there's already an alternative way to recoup costs with physical media. I'm pretty sure fans of the Willow franchise would really want a physical copy of the series. The studios can simply copy the anime model by selling them are around $50 - 100, and over $100 as collector's editions.

This isn't even the worst part. Right now there is a massive actors and writers strike going on in Hollywood with no end in sight. That might not seem bad now, but if the strike goes on for a year or more, many streaming services will be forced to remove content due to residuals and licensing fees. The end result would be empty streaming catalogs and many, many films and shows with no legal way of watching them.

I'm beginning a Blu-Ray preservation project. Sure they're a lot better than standard DVDs but movies should be watched on Blu-Ray in high definition. Hoard your DVDs and Blu-Rays now. As for Disney Blu-Rays in Britain and Ireland, they're releasing very few titles these days in response of Australia's Disney Blu-Rays discontinuation. I will definitely get Elemental on Blu-Ray. Arrow Video and Fabulous Films are serving a niche market when it comes to their Blu-Ray releases. If Disney exits physical media in the UK & Ireland, I will digitally purchase a Disney title on MS Movies & TV.

As someone who grown from the 2000s this is going to be sad to miss. I Remember a few weeks ago where I would go to Target and see how the DVD covers look like and they all look modernized with at least one or two characters with a background of their world with a certain color there’s even some Dreamworks dvds that just has the Main character or the Side characters in their covers with one simple color. I miss the old covers where they have life and once you buy it you are in for a ride for what’s to come like Cars’s DVD cover you see Lighting McQueen and on top of him some residents of Radiator Springs and one screenshot of Doc and McQueen driving into the sunset. It tells so much! But nowadays you see only the main character and the background with a color representing the world of cars (could be red, yellow, orange, or blue) But now unable to see them or buy them off the shelf’s… that’s horrifying!
