Dishwasher Detergent Cup Not Opening

This video from Sears PartsDirect shows what to do if your dishwasher won’t dispense detergent. If you notice soap left in your dishwasher’s detergent dispenser cup, you might have blocked the lid when you loaded the dishwasher. But if the cover on your dispenser doesn’t open at all, several things could be causing the problem.
Visit us at: www.searsparts...
1. Don’t block detergent cup or spray arm
If there’s still detergent in the cup when you open the dishwasher door, a dish might be blocking the dispenser during the wash cycle, preventing the soap from dispensing. Take care not to block the dispenser when you load the dishwasher.
Soap might still be in the dispenser because the spray arm couldn’t get enough water into the dispenser to push all the soap into the tub-usually because something is blocking the spray path between the lower spray arm and the dispenser. When loading the dishwasher, leave the path clear so plenty of spray reaches the dispenser cup.
2. Use fresh dishwasher detergent
Stale powder detergent can get stuck inside the dispenser cup, because the caked powder won't dissolve well. Replace powder dishwasher detergent if the powder clumps.
Don’t store powder detergent in the damp cabinet under the sink, where it absorbs moisture. Instead, store powder detergent in a cool, dry area such as an upper cabinet.
If the cover is still closed when you open the door after the cycle, check the cup, cover and latch for soap residue that could prevent it from releasing the cover.
Residue can clog the cover latch and coat the inside edges of the cover or the outer rim of the dispenser cup, causing the cover to stick shut. Clean the cup, cover and latch and see if the cup cover opens properly. In the future, try not to overfill the dispenser cup.
3. Check for a broken actuator
If the latch works and you aren't overfilling the cup, the dispenser actuator may be broken. A wiring failure or a defective electronic control board could also prevent the cover from opening.
To find the cause, check the wiring and measure the resistance of the dispenser actuator.
• Unplug the dishwasher or shut off the house circuit breaker for the dishwasher to disconnect electrical power.
• Open the dishwasher door and remove the Torx screws from the outer edges of the inner door panel. Support the outer door panel with one hand as you remove the final screws so the outer door panel doesn't fall.
• Separate the outer door panel and control panel slightly from the inner door panel, and rest the outer panel on the floor while you disconnect the user interface control wire harness. Pull off the outer door panel and control panel.
• Check the wire harness connection on the dispenser and reconnect the wire harness if it's loose, or repair it if you find damage. If the wire harness looks okay, check the resistance through the dispenser actuator using a multimeter. Checking resistance of the actuator tells us whether current can flow through it.
• Pull off the female wire harness plug to expose the actuator prongs. With the multimeter set to measure resistance in the 20,000-ohm range, touch one meter probe to each dispenser prong. It should measure between 1,400 and 2,800 ohms of resistance through the actuator. If it measures infinite resistance, replace the dispenser assembly because the actuator isn't allowing current to flow. www.searsparts....
4. Still not working? Call a technician
If it measures the proper resistance through the dispenser actuator, a wiring failure between the electronic control board and the dispenser or a defective electronic control board could be preventing the dispenser cover from opening. An internal mechanical failure in the dispenser could also be the cause.
Have a service technician examine and repair the dishwasher; the technician can perform live voltage checks to see if the electronic control board is sending voltage to the dispenser actuator. Those checks should only be performed by someone with proper training.
The video includes these parts and tools. Look up your model to make sure you get the right parts for your dishwasher.

OMG! Thank you. It never crossed my mind that maybe the dishes were blocking the door. No wonder why it opens sometimes and other times it doesn't. Going to give it a try right now. Thank you!!!!!!!!

I think you are a genius. We started having trouble about a month or so ago - and as you show around 2 min mark, it was when my wife thought it was a wise move to store the pods under the sink with the reg. dish soap. Omg. You most likely have solved our case! You are better than Coluimbo! thank you so much for posting this video!

This is a great video and gets straight to the points that I needed to know, the extra tip that I got on another video that might be good to include is if the spring on the dispenser door needs replacing. Based on this video and a few others, I know know I need to call for service help. Thanks from Sydney Australia.

Great video. I checked my lower sprayer and it seemed to be binding. I spun it a few times and it loosened up. Now it spins freely. My soap wasn't dissolving. Hopefully this works. Wouldn't have occurred to me without this video.

What about the spring?! I can't find a single video talking about the spring that pops the door open. The electronics are fine. The latch is fine. The door doesn't open because it's not under tension anymore because the spring popped out. It's still there; just one end of it has come out and I can't figure how to get it back in without taking the lid off the dispenser.

If the dispenser in your dishwasher looks like the one shown in the video, then the tension spring isn’t accessible. You’ll need to replace the entire detergent dispenser as shown in this video: www.searspartsdirect.com/repair-guide/Dishwasher/how-to-replace-a-dishwasher-detergent-dispenser.html. If your dishwasher has a different type of dispenser, post the model number of your dishwasher and we’ll try to help you more.

I have a 2000 Whirlpool dishwasher that has the dial on it that I acquired on purchasing a new home. question is when is the cover supposed to open is it on pots and pans light wash does it always pop open immediately on the very first cycle or does it pre wash the dishes first before it opens?

On that type of model, the dishwasher typically pre-washes the dishes before opening the detergent dispenser cover.
