Maybe it's a new patch, but heal experience is in the game now

The worst part is Disgaea 1 nowadays is... kinda hard to play again. I don't mean in that its a difficult game, which it admittedly is. I mean that with all the changes added between 2-5 that streamlined a ton of things, going straight back to EXACTLY what the original PS2 game was makes it show its age extremely well. At the very least they could have done this as a "Classic" mode so people could play the original the way it was back then, but as someone who got really comfy with things like the Cheat Shop, Land of Carnage/Carnage Dimension, and bills no longer requiring exams to pass, only asking the mana upfront, I simply can't recommend it even to newcomers of the franchise. I started with Disgaea 2 and have always wanted a remake to help it fit in today's age, but if this is an omen of what's to come, I think I will simply revisit the PS2 and enjoy it in all its dated goodness.

There has been a lot of QoL changes that went into patch 1.02. So it's definitely much better now. It doesn't have a cheat shop but they did have a bill that maxed out enemy levels which was a pain to keep adjusting on PS2/PSP. Healing should also give exp now which was a complaint a lot of Disgaea players had. Rank is also kept after transmigrations so you don't have to keep doing that over and over again. For newcomers who never played a disgaea game, I think it's a fine place to start since they haven't been "spoiled" by the new improvements. But for people who already own the D1 on a previous generation console, I would agree with you. Might as well skip it unless it's under $20. Although I don't think I could go back and play D1 on the PS2 lol. No animation skip is a nightmare.

Basically, if you own a copy of PSP or DS or just bought on steam, its hella better due to the price, its way cheaper and you get more or less the same content, and even more to it, you have the galactic demon to which i dont get why they decided to be lazy and just re place the sprite with the rifle demon

I would've definitely loved to see the original succubi but I can live with the newer designs I guess however I CANNOT forgive the fact they replaced the Galactic demon's. Those were always my favorite monsters and would've looked epic in HD. I'm extremely disappointed about that. I've always wanted to see how those monsters would look with new updated sprites.

I disagree I don't like the new Succubus designs. I was really disappointed when they changed the design in Disgaea 3! Fricking sucked.

@@AlastorShadow0 So true. I also dislike how chatty they made Nekomatas in the newer games, they were better when they only made cat noises in battles, now they speak fluid human language and it ruins their monster aspect.

Healers dont gain through their job is a pain. But not that since we are back tracking a system. This also sets me back knowing Disgaea and NIS. Played D3 in Vita and jump to D5 on Switch which overwhelmed me. This is game is a refresher classic and nostalgic one

if you mentored a mage to the healer, you could have learned and trained a 3x3 spell.

as someone who been playing Disgaea since it's PS2 era, although a bit pricey, I still say it's worth getting at lest for the switch port cause you are not only getting better graphics but also get to play it on the go

Hopefully they take the feedback from the recent remasters and make Disgaea 4 complete a little more worth buying than the others, and not broken of course ;p

You can also check the patch notes from the JP site here nippon1.jp/news/news20181019.html (they're up to 1.05 and dark assembly rank change was in 1.04). Of course I don't have the JP version and google translate sucks so I can't verify it but it seems to be true. However when/if we're getting the patch in the west is another story.

I’m pisses they got lazy even on the visuals. Instead of giving us updated sprites from the original game, they just swapped out them out for the updated models they have been using since Disgaea 2. I wanted to see the original skull designs in hd, I wanted the goth maid mages in hd, I wanted the original warrior designs in hd :/

I liked Disgaea 2 the most. The PSP version that is. Wished D2 would get rereleased.

I got it last December for half the price (€25) so I think it was quite worth it. I own it on Ps2 as well but I did not manage to finish it back in the day, so I took the chance to try and finish it now. The grind is as tedious as I remembered it to be, but I am still going on, hopefully I will be able to beat it this time

yeah the disgaea 1 grind was something else, especially on PS2 when there was no animation skip or Demonhall Mirror. Luckily they also increased the effective statistician limit so leveling will be a bit faster. Good luck!

I was disappointed with all the lazy bullshit they did with this "remasterpiece" as they undeservedly called it. The fact that they didn't even redo the sprites of numerous characters was a huge red flag to me during its development. I would have been fine with having these new characters in addition to the old ones but they literally just copy pasted and replaced them. This was an opportunity for them to add to that library of usable character types in their hd games bringing back old favorites like the manticore. While they did add in the new majin and geomancer i would argue it's because they didn't have some replacement they could just copy paste into it as a place holder. This is LITERALLY what modders did on the PC version and i expected better from NIS themselves. The fact they have the gal to charge full price for what is obviously a lazy, no effort, cash grab just adds insult to injury for me. I usually shell out extra for the collectors boxes too buying when they launch but sensing this horse crap ahead of time I've still yet to pull the trigger on it. I probably won't be getting this till it's sitting in s bargain bin at game stop. Disgaea is my favorite series and it pains me to say, i can't recommend this to anyone. NIS usually gave alot of bang for the buck for re releases usually adding whole new stories to the campaign of their portable releases to justify re buying. Not here. This is continuing a trend where they attempt to do the bare minimum for a cash grab and in that case fail to do even that which was redo all the sprites in hd to make it more appealing to new gen gamers and might make old players buy again. But this was a half assed job even on that front. And usually they don't try to milk full price again even when there's more content. I'm very sad.

I bought it because I never played the ps2 version so I bought mine for the ps4 and I have to say other than the things that I took for granted in 5 I'm actually very satisfied with this one

@@wizardcat2232 My biggest problems with it basically aren't that applicable to those who are new to the series. Someone who didn't play it on PS2 and PSP before this and had knowledge of the replacement mod on PC probably wont be as irked as someone who has. It does feel clunky if you've played D5 though. And that is an observation any PS4 or Switch owner can make.

luckily for disgaea pc, there is a fan project that changes the game npc sprites. free too :) [MOD] Disgaea PC HD Sprites. it is called if anyone is curious. it's on the discussions thread. besides that, hopefully they make a big game on the next disgaea game. hopefully moddable too. i want different character protraits. custom classes. 100% customization too.

Yup, The Invasion Within and One With The Stars were only in the original PS2 version (along with Etna's original voice actress Amanda Winn Lee).

You can get DISGAEA 1 COMPLETE on mobile version now with the fix issue like the diagonal throw, heal exp, more

Just picked it up for $25 cad on switch. I'm looking forward to playing it for the first time!

I'd say it's worth it if you don't own any of the previous releases of Disgaea 1. It's still an amazing game in terms of sheer content. If you already own any of the previous versions - wait till it's on sale. Unless you've only got the PS2 release and are really dying for the Switch port so you can play a portable version.

You should probably play 4 or 5, 4 has arguably one of the better stories in the series and began that push in the right direction system wise for the series and 5 has so many QoL improvements and functions that are amazing, giving it the best pulled from all games, its like a Disgaea game made for fans with new character types and an overhaul on pretty much everything with a traditional martial arts story. (If you like G Gundam, you will like Disgaea 5). Supposedly the Disgaea 1 Complete Mobile port has QoL improvements that we would expect like Cheat shop and such from D5. I'm hoping they do a patch to add that into the console versions of D1 Complete to have them catch up. I'm really hoping they stop this port train and begin working on Disgaea 6 or at least a new spinoff game like Disgaea D2 was.

I miss my cowboys...

It's $20-something on Switch now along with 4C+

First time playing so worth it.

I ran into a bug that replaced my main characters with a Data Shop person and a lv355 zombie. I gave up

50 bucks for this is insulting. I fucking love this game and played it back in the day. Its how I found out and NIS to begin with. I had my people at around level 5k or so when i called it quits due to other games i wanted to play. If you have never played this and always wanted to I would suggest waiting for a price drop. Loved the game and Ioved the story because it was so ridiculous but 50 bucks for the effort they put in is asking alot.

@@Addictivemeh Thats kinda pushing it. Depends i guess on how much disposable income you have and what new games are coming out that you want to play. I ended up trading a couple 3DS games towards it and got it for 20 bucks. I personally really love the game so it was worth it in my opinion.

By the way, if any of you were considering getting Disgaea 1 Complete for mobile... Um, don't. For whatever reason, the mobile version (which is still a full price game) doesn't download properly, and it's possible that it might refuse to download the last file. Of course, this seems to largely depend on how new your phone is, but it still doesn't excuse a frustrating, hours long download process that might not even work.

I was starting to sharpen my pitchfork, thank god it became clear he meant te remake was a disappointment, not the original game.

The only bad thing about this release, is the healers no getting exp upon healing

i waited for a price drop. never played D1. only 3 and 5 and a tiny bit of 2. i picked up Disgaea 1 complete new for 14.99$. i did get Disgaea 4+complete for 40$ as well

Oof this looks a bit rough its a shame because this is the defnitive version of Disgaea and thats cool.... But disgaea 1 is the kinda game that needs a straight up remake or at least in terms of mechanics and backporting stuff from at least 2 and 3

Healers do get exp... but it's a small amount.

They need to add auto battle mode a speed up on the game too. Look at the android mobile port. There adding it in Disgaea 6 so its a pretty big deal.

I need to mention this, the no healer experience is off here, I have leveled up my healer with heals before in complete, though I will admit it is not a lot of exp

@@scarletrose8766 You can also get him in 3 though you have to buy him and he only unlocks in postgame. I found a mod that lets you recruit him and a bunch of other characters like Seraph Lamington in this.

i picked up the switch copy of this for £23.17 in the uk off amazon... i own the psp and pc. buy never got round to playing the pc one. did play the psp one back in the day but i find the pspgo sreen to be to small now. i love the updated gfx and the 1.0.3 patch with all it added goodnuess (healer XP for healling for the win) and sreen size is good with the switch and if i feel like it. i can put it on my tv to. i would not pay full price for this... £45? not just no but hell no... but i happy at the price i did pay. i would say that for anyone who never owned a copy of Disgaea 1 Complete this is the one to get. now i just need to Find Disgaea 5 Complete at a ok price. i do own the ps4 copy but i think i recall the switch got lot of new content.

I own Disgaea 1 complete Disgaea afternoon of darkness and Disgaea DS and ordered Disgaea hour of darkness

I played Disgea one on the ps3 for a while, and trying disgea5 right now on psnow. Besides that I'm pretty much a newbie to the series. Of course I will wait for a price drop/ when it is on sale. Still would like to know, for someone new to the series, is this game still a good start? Or should I go back to my ps3? (which would sucka little cause... no trophies, no screenshots and I only ahve very cheap ps3 controllers that don't feel so nice to use)

Well, it's still Disgaea 1 at its core so if you liked playing on the PS3 then you should still like it. They changed a bunch of the art, which a lot of people had problems with. Personally, it wasn't that big a deal for me. They also released a lot of QoL changes so the game is much better than it was at launch. The big question is, do you believe those QoL changes, graphical update, and of course being able to play it on ps4 (or switch), are worth another $50 dollars.

Well like I said, regardless if it is still a good start for new commers or not, I will wait with purchase till a price drop or it is on sale. ^^ Again, my biggest reasons for me to get it for ps4 are trophies, the ability to make screenshoots, that my ps3 controllers suck and the possibility that this version may have a bit more content than the version I have on ps3. But if you say that for the most part it's still a good start for new commers, I certainly will keep an eye out for it ^^

@@toongrowner1 D1 is nice for newcommers as you can track easily all the basic core mechanics, as to which with each version are added more and more that upgrade it but make it harder to newcommers, plus, if you have a decent PC, disgaea 1 pc is almost same as complete although it has hd sprites of the original disgaea, plus achievement and screenshots and PS4 control support

Disgaea on steam seems to be more your thing, I haven't played the original ps2 one, but I think they kept the original in that one just have the graphics about that you can switch on and off

Disgaea 4 is the best of the series. Play it.

Depends on the person. I played every Disgaea game exept for D3, and for now the one I had the least fun playing was D4 by far. It was a big disappointment cause I always heard people saying it was the best Disgaea game and I was always waiting for the moment it got good and that pushed me through it... it never came =/ Not saying it's a bad game, but the overhype kinda left me with a distaste for the game. At least it had Desco and the new info about prinnys and Hades was interesting too.

But if I had to say one thing I do not like about D2 would be Axel... I really do not like the guy, but everything else really makes up for it. Probably, for me, it doesn't help that D4 gives him so much focus.

I never played any other Disgaea except 5 on ps4. I just want another similar to 5 but with even bigger roster both monster and generics as well of other story characters. I need Disgaea 6

Ughghghg I didnt see this until after I had gotten it..I don't mind new sprites but completely diffefent portraits/sprites is noooo. Also altered music..

This is the type of review I am looking for. I remember playing the original version on a friend's copy on PlayStation. Learning that extra add ons + the price. Yikes! A longtime fan, or newbie needs to know in depth information about this remaster. Learning about this remaster / port = ugh And the price point is ridiculous. The sad part is, if you're a Switch owner, you are stuck with the $60 price tag until Nintendo approves a retailer to have it on sale / or markdown. Which will not happen very often. I feel for fans that eat this up, not knowing that it's a mess, and treated as a complete package when it fact, it is not Because of your voice, and discussion. You just earned a new subscriber

Dood, Disgaea 4 complete plus had laharl and a younger version of his old man playable... He should have been included in the switch remake of the first game, at least as a DLC character. I am not too sure about getting Disgaea 5 complete.

This is not "complete version" maybe it's a Incomplete version: Graphics: looks like an unfinished textures mod for the orginal from ps2 Gameplay: it's totally like the original... Why not changes like the healers gaining exp for using his heal habilities? Missing features: The prinny commentary and the map from DS version are missing... And I miss a lot the map in the item world!!! The price: this game version is totally overpriced... Maybe for 30$/€ it's OK, but no for 50!! Ps I'm not English speaker and I'm not a good english writer, sorry for the possible mistakes in my text

Didn't add the multi-player from the PSP either. I loved it and my friends and I fought each other a lot. We also made a Tyrant Ball mini Game.

This game is amazing and so are the other complete disgaea games. Definitely not a disappointment

Why, oh why, did they take everything from the psp version? No Amanda Winn Lee as Etna, all the halfjapanese voice they never fixed, a lazy fastforward option instead of the same option in the... options, the old voices on the newer D2 characters. Trust me, it's sounds weird! I mean if you have played the original on Ps1, you will notice how much seems the same in the wrong way. For those who have played the first original, you will see what's wrong pretty much immediatly. The charm the first game had, taken away with D2 skins. I think I rather play D2 actually. Don't let new players play this. This is NOT how it was, at least not those skins! One more thing btw... a bit of a personal for me, Etna's badass stance from the first game is gone as well. I liked the old stance, less relaxed and more focused for battle.

I don't know of many games that actually reach that $10 dollar mark. I'd say $20 is fair asking price, especially if they continue to support it.

Seriously, they could have just made a collection or another D2.(D3 in this case) Disgaea 5 was just awful, it was more serious than it should with cliche plots that nobody(in game) made fun of, Disgaea's thing was to mock these stuff not to surrender to them!!

@@Raximus3000 Another "D2" would have been interesting for sure. I'm a little surprised you think D5 is awful. It seems really well liked by the community. But the point you bring up does not sound very Disgaea like and is disappointing but I think I'll still end up liking D5 when I get to it though... whenever that is.

@@JRPGFanatic The gameplay is fine, its greatest fault is that the plot is basicaly save the universe not conquer it or smth, even in Disgaea 2 it felt more like Disgaea with the insane things they did. Disgaea 5 is basicaly another dark RPG like it was the trend of the time, plot wise.

@@Raximus3000 Disgaea 5 is a prequel of the series, showing the past of certain characters. It was a great game, with the comedy being in how absurd certain characters' personalities were. It's honestly my favourite in the series, having one of the best, and most powerful protagonists in the series

I miss the original male healers, the new variety are just annoying.

You know remasters and ports don't exist for you to keep buying the same game, and yet that's the only perspective you gave on this.

YES because disgaea pc was also launched at a reduced price right?? TRUE?? NO. Disgaea pc is an inferior port in every aspect poorly optimized and with broken (the graphics are still broken today, they never fixed it, it has blur options and weird things that don't work) and it's slow I was there on launch day of PC. your comparison is pathetic teach the healer an offensive magic or put him in the middle of a combo and stop crying anyway they added the heal experience thing in an update (not long after release) and increased the statitcian cap even more. I understand that it may seem expensive but it is nis and they had to make their product profitable as much as possible. It is a niche game and they know they will have the most fans at launch. "deception" is a bit of an exaggeration term, being that the game offers the same as in the trailer no more no less, there was never any talk of remodeling the core of the game or anything else lolwut

I've played almost every Disgaea game since the beginning, including two other versions of this one. This is the first Disgaea game I bailed on midway. It felt cheap, lazy, and sloppy. I'm okay not hearing the male thief say "booya" but I really miss the original Chimera. It had a classic, mythological feel. They could at least have ported in some new characters, even as paid DLC. What a waste...

It looks like a really lame, and lazy remaster, what a waste of time.
