Discussing

Rich Cole talks Barrel tech with Ricardo Oliveri from Beretta R&D in Italy. With 500 years of barrel manufacturing history under their belt, Beretta has a bit of experience.
The main concept of this video is forcing cones in barrel variations. Beretta has three main versions of their proprietary Steelium barrels. A forcing cone is the area of transition between the chamber of the barrel and the bore, it is also the area of transition between the bore and the choke. Both are technically forcing cones- For the sake of simplicity we are discussing the area in between the chamber and the chokes within the barrel (painted blue in the video).
Longer forcing cones require much more machining as they are essentially a conical barrel as opposed to a simple tube with a choke on the end. The advantage of longer forcing cones is greater accuracy, reduced recoil, and reduced flyaways with a superior pattern. The longer forcing cones deform less pellets within the barrel and ensure a smoother and more precise discharge with every shot.
Steelium Pro with Optima HP Chokes is found on Beretta’s top of the line shotguns, such as the famed #DT11. With a 480mm long tapered conical forcing cone, felt recoil is greatly reduced and flyaways are minimized. Combined with the rest of the weapon, this barrel gives the shooter the best chances of hitting the target with almost no wasted pellets in the spread.
Steelium Plus with Optima HP Chokes is the intermediate length forcing cone, found on competition level guns such as the Beretta 692 and 694. With a 380mm forcing cone, it is almost as accurate as the DT11 at a more attractive price point for shooters that are not at the professional level.
Steelium with Optima HP Chokes is Beretta’s standard barrel technology, tried and proven over years and years and is found on the Beretta 690 series of shotgun. Whichever barrel you choose, feel confident that you are shooting the cutting edge of barrel technology, backed by 5 centuries of barrel manufacturing.

Excellent content on this KZread channel, Rich is the best expert I ever heard on Beretta gun's. I'm a first time clay shooter and I'm looking at the 686 or 690 after all my research and watching youtube videos reviews about Beretta's in my opinion there are the most reliable, well made over and unders on the market I would call them the Rolex's of gun's. I live in Titusville Fl about four hours from the Naples Fl location so I will be coming there soon to get fitted. Because I did not realize how important it is to getting fitted for the gun to maximize the performance for shooting more clays just like getting fitted for golf clubs to maximize their distance and accuracy. In closing I'm looking forward to meeting you'll in person as well become more involved in the world of clay shooting. Sincerely, your future customer David

Interesting descriptions of the work done on barrel interiors to produce the most even spread of pellets possible and eliminate fliers. Patterns to prove this concept would go a long way toward convincing shooters it's fact rather than marketing.

Thanks for the video. It sounds like Beretta has been able to put into production very long forcing cones and bore work that was previously super rare and not used much from the past. I'm thinking about a few shotguns like some worked over SUPER FOX waterfowl guns and such. Quick question about recoil. How different does the recoil impulse feel compared to a more "traditional" setup?

A question for Mr. Cole. Will a Beretta 690 barrel fit an older Beretta model 680 Trap. This Beretta model 680 was purchased in 1982 as a left over. It has the original wide receiver style. Thank you for your time.

I bought a 694 two weeks ago and had to send it back to Beretta for repair or service ? I could not get the shotgun to shoot 50/50 Beretta has it now lets see how it comes back, keep you posted. Btw I'm a 96 to 100 trap shooter I do know about shooting and shotguns, disappointed in the 694 but not every shotgun comes out perfect , but they should of texted before shipping, that's me ten cents opinion. Let see how it comes back from Beretta, hope all will be fine.

@@colefinegunsandgunsmithing I did send it back to get the pattern corrected. It did come back with the 50/50 pattern that I use in turnaments, it took four weeks for Beretta to do the job but it was done correctly. BTW, I bought a DT11 and the stock is at your shop getting and ajustment comb added.

@@colefinegunsandgunsmithing Cole, let me ask you if I may. I have bought Beretta 694, came from factory. I have unscrewed chokes from the berrel and one of the choke came off with difficulty, as if it snags against something inside the berrel. I have tried this choke to insert it in my Berreta 692 and it went ok. Do you think it is ok to use it in the shotgun or I need to replace it, because it may demage berrel?
