    55 yrs old and just ordered my first few hats, 2 flat caps and a fedora. Not gonna lie im a little nervous about wearing them with my suits but I don't know why more men don't wear hat. They're such a cool accessory. Everytime I watch an old black and white movie, I cant help think, why don't guys dress like this anymore?

    Thanks for sharing, you made some sound choices there, flat caps are becoming a mature persons baseball cap (even though the flat cap lead to the creation of the baseball cap in the first place). and a fedora is the most flexible of hats to wear, formally or informally. Trust me the more you wear the fedora the more your confidence will grow. If it is any consolation - I have seen an increase in people wearing trilbies in my local town, which is not dissimilar so the hat is becoming a little more popular and a great way of expressing yourself and looking cool👍🙂

    During the 1920's, (and perhaps s a few decades prior) 30's, 40's,50's and early 60's, men wore dress hats even if they worked in factories were dressing up was not expected. Even farmers wearing "bib overalls" might remove their hats momentarily to wipe the sweat from their brows while laboring in the hot sun but you can bet that that hat (perhaps a sweaty fedora) went right back on their heads before they resumed working. I own a few dress hats (only two but very elegant yet simple) and almost never wear them and yet I adamantly chose to wear the black one along with my black suit, black necktie, and black dress overcoat when attending my mother's funeral and while participating in the carrying of her casket. Therefore, men's dress hats may fall in and out of fashion, but will never cease to be one of the most important items in men's attire.

    Great content, Chris. Always an education and much appreciate. Whenever I see a trilby I automatically think of George Cole's Arthur Daly character from the Minder TV series. I don't yet own a fedora, but one is on my wish list. I will get it from Lock & Co. I have three drop Panama hats for summer and keep the best one for special occasions. It is something I have got used to wearing over the years and now I think I am ready for a fedora for the winter instead of a flat cap / cheese cutter. It is strange how, pre WW2, every man wore a hat, and yet today, some people view the wearing of a traditional hat as a sign of eccentricity. I say, not so, just a gent expressing his own personal style, and a perfect excuse to doff it briefly when greeting a lady. BTW, I couldn't help but be impressed by your jacket, waistcoat, tie and pocket square combo. Very dapper!😎 P.S. If you don't mind, I would like to drop you an email asking for some more sartorial advice...😊

    Who can forget the Arthur Daly character in the Minder and his trilby 🙂, Great choices of hat with the drop Panama and as for the fedora - Lock & Co have a great selection 👍. I have noticed that a few more adventurous pop stars are now wearing wide brimmed fedoras as part of their fashion style, which is great news for the hat industry. I think wearing a hat is the next step up in sartorialism and doffing a hat for a lady is still a gentlemanly thing to do. Thank you for your ongoing support and great content for the channel. Glad you enjoyed the ensemble for the video. I look forward to your email and I'm please to offer my views and advice 🙂

    I have been wearing a fedora since the 1980s. In the summer I wear a Panama straw. I try to hold the hat by the brim when putting it on to keep from pinching the front. I forget sometimes though. Always at a jonty angle. I always get compliments on my hats. Cheers Ron

    Hello Ron!, great to hear of your enduring fondness for the fedora since the 80s. Quite the feat, I must say and when summer arrives, you smartly switch to a Panama straw, a choice that evokes a sense of tropical sophistication. Now, when it comes to donning your beloved headwear, you make a valiant effort to grasp the brim, thus preventing any unfortunate pinching of the front. Alas, like you I also have the occasional slip of memory and it is bound to happen, but for such negligible mishaps I would suggest in no way does it diminish your overall elegance. Ah, the jonty angle! Forever a delightful touch. A slightly askew position that adds a touch of rakish charm to an already dapper ensemble. It's no wonder that your splendid taste in hats gets you a steady stream of complimentary remarks. Thanks for your comments and your continued support for the channel Ron and keep wearing your fedora and Panama, great choices of hat.🙂

    @@TheBritishDapper my grandfather gave me his Stetson fedora in 1979 and I wore it with pride throughout the 80s. I had it cleaned steamed and blocked twice. It is now in need of a complete refurbishment. It needs another band and it needs to have the sweatband. I have a couple of other fedoras but this one holds a special place in my heart. The hat was made in the late 40s early 50s. And still bears the price tag from a local store for $12.50. cheers Ron

    @@ronaldpoppe3774 Thank you for sharing such a meaningful story about your Stetson fedora. It's clear that the hat holds a special place in your heart, given its history and the memories associated with it. It's wonderful that you wore it with pride throughout the 80s, and I can imagine how important it must be to you. The fact that it was made in the late 40s or early 50s and still bears the original price tag from a local store adds to its uniqueness and charm. I understand that the hat is now in need of a complete refurbishment, requiring another band and a new sweatband. It's great that you're considering restoring it to its former glory. A skilled hatter (milliner) or a specialty hat shop should be able to help you with this. They can provide the necessary repairs and refurbishments to bring back the hat's original splendour while ensuring its longevity. I hope you're able to find the right professionals who can give your fedora the attention it deserves. It's great to see how this cherished item carries so much sentimental value. I hope your hat continues to bring you joy and serve as a reminder of your grandfather's gift and the memories it holds. 🙂

    Hi Ian, it depends on what colour range to tend to wear most of the time, I would suggest a Dark Brown hat for clothes that are less formal such as fawns, browns, green tones or blues would be an excellent choice. Grey is another popular colour for a hat and goes well with greys, blacks or navy etc. Black Hat's are also a very popular choice and goes well with most colours in a formal setting. Navy Hats go well with formal navy suits and jackets 🙂, but if you can only afford one hat, I would advise a dark brown one, its the more versatile of the colours, hope that helps🙂👍

    Great insight! Where does a Panama hat fit in?

  • @TheBritishDapper

    @TheBritishDapper

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Mike, the hats discussed in this video are felt hats, although I did use a straw version of a pork pie had to discuss the virtues of the felt pork pie hat, only as I do not have a felt version. However, the Panama hat is considered a straw hat, although it is actually made out of a palm like plant. The origins of the Panama hat (its English title) also known as the Ecuadorian hat, precedes the fedora and the trilby. it is true that the style of the Panama hat can have varying styles and it is common to see them now lapelled as Panama fedoras (a way of covering all the bases I suppose). it is said that the best Panama hats are Montecristi Panama's. Rollable Panama's tend to have a distinctive fold across the centre on the top of the hat from front to back Hope this answers your query🙂

    The higher echelons of the donkey walloper crowd will sport Trilby's with considerable brim, generally with a less wide ribbon than a Fedora, and of a similar colour to the hat body. I'd suggest that fur felt Fedora's tend to have more body and better lining than most Trilby's ? :)

  • @TheBritishDapper

    @TheBritishDapper

    11 ай бұрын

    Thanks for your comments, fur felt does tend to be a more compacted material due to the fibres and when the felt is sanded down in the finishing process it tends to give a more finer finish than wool, whether its a fedora or a trilby or any other form of felt hat. I think when it comes to the quality of the hat, regardless of type, it comes down to the price a person is willing to pay and the cost of the materials. Obviously a £300 trilby is going to look better in the finishing than a £50 fedora as an example. I have not personally witness a difference in quality the same price fedora or trilby. Locke and Co and Battersby appear to use the same linings, band finishing and ribbons on either. I will have to explore your observations further, thanks for raising these points👍🙂

    In the "Rocky" film series, the character Rocky Balboa, portrayed by Sylvester Stallone, is often seen wearing a black felt fedora. The fedora becomes somewhat of a signature accessory for Rocky throughout the movies. It's worth noting that the specific style of hat may vary slightly in different scenes and films within the series, but the classic black fedora is a consistent part of Rocky's iconic look. If you want to have the hat turned up at the front, then you can ask for it to be shaped like that, it's shaped with steam and a good quality Fedora can be easily shaped in store - I'd suggest a Stenson Black Fedora would be a good choice👍 Hope that helps🙂

    I am still not clear on the difference between trilbys and fedoras and I sat here with my hats as you discussed them. I picked up two Goorin Brothers “Stingy Brim” Fedoras plus a pork pie for six American dollars a little over a year ago which I figure to be about $400 worth of hats. I am still not sure whether they are trilbys or fedoras. I have regularly wore hats most of my life, starting with Western style hats, moving to fedoras as I stopped working in agriculture and since added Homburgs and Bowlers to my collection.

  • @TheBritishDapper

    Hi Alan, great to hear from you again, the Stingy Brim is a fedora and pork pie has its roots based on a fedora, so neither would be a trilby, great choices by the way and looks like you got them at a fantastic price. Homburgs and Bowlers are quite formal hats and still go well with a suit on those special occasions. Hope this helps, lovely to hear from you again Alan and thank you for your continued support🙂
