I'm watching this video without any previous experience or exposure to German and it's amazing how much I can pick up from the common vocabulary. I'm just taking notes and repeating out loud pronunciations and it feels very fast for learning. Once you learn non-European languages though you begin to appreciate the leg up you get with studying a language with similarities rather than none.

Why would anyone say their opinion openly about discrimination with an African American there? Obviously they would try to say something nice. I would say this is biased sample survey.

Ach! and the fact that the video would be uploaded for the entire world to see your opinion?? Deterring enough? (Think of your family, friends, employer, employees, customers, etc) I think the presence of the African American camera man wasn't really tipping the scale. But I do agree that there are solid reasons why the answers could have been biased.

I don't get this comment. People openly said that discrimination does exist in Germany and they were asked about their own experiences. There are many forms of discrimination, apart from racism, as discussed in the video.

I'd say my point. Like "No, its not. I'm a man of preferences, is human. So my preferences are with only WHITE people. Do you interfer with my preferences? Then YOU have a trouble. You must respect my preferences. And anyone preferences." Simply like that.

There is one solution for this- "What do people say about me is none of my business. The only thing I can do is to ignore them and proceed with my great aim without troubling anyone." say this sentence three times whenever you face a discriminative situation. It works. I'm also a foreigner living in Germany. I have seen many discriminant people here. But, trust me, you will really find good people if you follow above lines. Discrimination exists everywhere in the world. Wherever there are people, there is discrimination. Only, the intensity differs from region to region.

Living in Germany for more than two years, I have to say I've experienced a lot of discrimination, even from few colleague. It is sad, because it is so true. One of my colleague bets me having no driving licence, and her boyfriend, also my colleague, just refers me to other people as "you know, Chinesin". They just feel they are better than me for no reason (maybe because I come from a poor country, say China?). And it seems that some cashiers just hate Asian people, they roll their eyes on us, sometimes even throw the receipt to us. I mean, us, not me only. I checked with my Mongolia friend, and some other Asian people, we can spend hours sharing our bad experience... Anyway, most of people I meet in Germany are really nice and friendly, I have several friends here, and my boyfriend is also German. Whenever I am treated rudely or obviously discriminated, I just think about how nice my boyfriend is, otherwise I will be really sad.

For any foreinger planning to go to germany: The vast majority of germans arent discriminating and are open minded, especially younger ones. The population is just very educated and concious about the subject and therefore they all have an opionion about it. This has something to to do with our past, we know first hand to what horror predejuces can lead. We are also very honest and dont fear to tell that we definetly have discrimination in our society, especially in outer regions and more in eastern germany than west germany. The bigger cities (especially berlin) are generally very open minded and inclusive. There are good chances you dont experince discrimination for being black/gay etc unless you live in smaller towns in Thüringen, Sachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt or meckelburg-vorpommern...The refugee crisis sadly divided our country, and some (not all!) pull out old belief systems. But even in eastern germany tose are an minority!

An Arab in Austria told me that his dream is to kill all Jews. Also, in my language class in Germany a Palestinian girl doest want to meet people from our school (Venezuelans, Americans, Japaneses, Italians and Czechs) because according to her we drink alcohol and she doesnt want to be with us because we drink once in awhile when in reality when we meet for lunch just half of students drink, is not like we are going to a club to get drunk.

I can only talk about my own experience- but in the small town near Hamburg where I grew up, tolerance was valued very much. No matter if you were old or young. We had several African, Russian, Polish, American and French families in the city and we all lived together - grew up together. It didn’t matter. The same for gay people - it’s not even something you needed to talk about, just as nobody questioned being straight.

You don't talk about tolerance, you talk about acceptance. If you start to accept people you stop tolerating them. Because you have to disagree with someone on any topic to tolerate them. If you stop disagreeing you start accepting. It seemed like you don't have an issue with being gay, so you are accepting them, not tolerating.

It's true that discrimination exists everywhere. What's interesting with street interviews is that you are able to gather public opinions and not mere author's view when you read them in books. Impromptu interviews aren't scripted and you get a first-hand honest answer that you won't necessarily expect to hear. Thanks for this episode.

Please more videos like this! I feel that the world is at a crossroad right now. Conversations like this one helps us move toward a more open and peaceful world. I pray that we don't reach a point of history where posting a video like this would be considered "brave"

SpongeMind TV It’s definitely not brave these times, because that’s the mainstream in Germany now, It would be brave to post a video exatly the opposite of this( just to say I don’t think the opposite of this) . And I don’t think it that the complete dissappearing of discrimination ( it depends on what you difine with this word exactly) would bring us peace, because if treat everyone the same way , some people will also feel themselves uncomfortable or attacked, so this question , I think is a bit more complicated than those people in the explain it. And talking in Germany about rassism or discrimination is always a tricky thing.

Was ich gemeint habe war, dass wir dadurch ein paar Schritte naher zu Frieden kommen können, vielleicht mehr so als das Gegenteil, spreading discrimination. Nur im Vergleich zu einander. Und ich stimme dir auch da, wo du sagst "I think it is a bit more complicated than those people explained it". Ja stimmt, das IST ein komplizietes Thema und ein zehn minutendes Video kann das gar nicht völlig erklären. Und diese Menschen hatte nur eine Minute oder weniger dafür also... unmöglich war das.

I am sure there are a lot of bad things, including racism and the persecution of certain religions, happening in those countries too, perhaps to a worse extent than in developed and more diverse countries. If you ask these people in the video, many of them I think would actually say so too. I think they are holding a country like Germany to a higher standard because it has the capacity to be held to a higher standard in terms of how far the society has come and how much it has learned from its own history. I don't think these people are saying "Germany bad, my country good". Plus, I assume some of them are actually Germans who had no or little memory of where their parents or great-great parents came from. So they have a good reason to voice their opinion and try to make their own homeland (=Germany) a more open society where they are also viewed as Germans. Anyway, thanks again for the comment. I am glad people with varying opinions can still discuss complicated subjects. Someday my German would be good enough to write the whole thing in German ;-)

Yes, there is discrimination, definitely! So, can you describe a situation? Ahm...neeee...a culture of blame (the "discriminated") in the culture (germans in general) of shame (the "discriminating"). I live in Europe, I have been around a lot and germans are probably least discriminating/prejudicious people in the whole Europe. Want to see discrimination, well, try being an arab in Poland. You will see what discrimination is like.

I am Sikh which is totally a different religion than Islam though terrorism has no religion and I respect all the religion but i feel bad when someone says terrorist to me just because I wear a Pagg (A thing of pride for every Sikh). Although i have done anything wrong in my life. I have German people in my office and they all know the difference of it and they all are very good and professional. I'll be coming to Germany in this winter to study my master's in Technical University of Munich. I just hope that people will see me as a Sikh and not a Terrorist.

I hear sentences like: [refering to my austrian dialect] "Do you have a brain attack or are you disabled in another way?" "Are you even able to speak?" "Are you able to speak proper German" "Don't they have education in your country? (insert my answer) So why do you speak in such a stupid way?" "bless you" (because my dialect sounds like having a stroke or sth) "shut up, gay!" (the viennese accent is the stereotypical accent of homosexuells in Germany) [refering to my nation/ethnic-group/culture/history] "Hello Nazi, Hitler was Ösi, Ösiland is to blame for WW2 not Germany!" (Ösi is a racist term for Austrian) "Oh, you are able to wear normal clothing?" (because there are areas in Austria where people wear Lederhosen and Diandl in everyday life) "Please, yodel something" "Ösiland is Germany" "fu#king cliffshitter" "Eastern marcher!" "you aren't a real European, because you have narrow eyes" (many people in Austria have narrow eyes similar to asians. Maybe because of the Mongol invasion of Europe in the 13th century)

Cari, oft schau ich eure Videos, einfach um als Muttersprachlerin eine bessere Perspektive zu bekommen, wie es ist Deutsch zu lernen. Aber ich schätze eure Beiträge auch wirklich als gute und wichtige Gesellschaftsportraits! Weiter so!

Ich bin Türke und in Berlin geboren und aufgewachsen. Wurde nie diskriminiert oder rassistisch beleidigt. Mir ist nur aufgefallen, dass Ostdeutsche natürlich ihre Vorurteile über fremde Menschen haben. Ich denke, dass es daran liegt, dass dort wenige Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund leben und weil die auch ein ganz anderes System hatten. Schließlich war es einmal die DDR.

Ich komme aus dem Süden in den USA. Dies ist auch für uns ein schwieriges Thema. Danke. Die beste Antwort war "bildung, bildung, bildung".

Meine Meinung nach ist, dass Deutschland ein Vorbild für viele Länder ist. Verbesserung geht natürlich immer aber einen Klaps auf die Schulter hilft auch manchmal. Ich komme aus dem Nahen Osten und dort werden bestimmten Gruppen wie Frauen, Homosexuelle, religiöse und ethnische Minderheiten systematisch von der Gesellschaft und sogar manchmal von dem Gesetz diskriminiert. Ich bin sehr froh, dass ich jetzt als Frau in Deutschland lebe und ich hoffe, dass irgendwann keine Diskriminierung mehr in meinem Heimatland und in der ganzen Welt gibt.

Noble project you have here. It would be nice if this were a daily conversation everywhere in the world.

Usually I think racists never visit a foreign country, or never visit a country who has a total different group of people. Moreover usually people who lack of education are more likely to discriminate somebody.

Being gay and colombian (mixture of 3 ethnic groups) I percieve racism in Munich is agressive and everywhere. The worst point is that German people feel really offended when they ask me and I give my honest opinion.

If a person doesn't want to try another one equality, because of this second person's skin colour or place of origin, that first person IS racist or xenophobic respectively. Look it up in a dictionary. Then these discriminations ARE NOT only an opinion, but 'the denial of other people's rights, dignity and equality' (UN International Agreement on Civil and Political RIGHTS).

Yes I would say the German is practical one. They usually make friends with people offering benefits. They look down people from the poor countries. That’s what I witnessed the German people in Ireland but I believe there are still good and nice German people in somewhere in the world 😔

Ich bin nun fast 60 Jahre und schwul und ich habe in meinem Leben noch nie deswegen Angriffe gegen mich in Deutschland erlebt. Ich bin sehr glücklich, dass ich in diesem Land aufwachsen konnte. In anderen Ländern hätte man mich ermordet (z.B. Iran). Als ich geboren wurde, kam man für Homosexualität ins Gefängnis und heute können wir sogar heiraten. Das ist eine tolle Entwicklung. Aus diesem Grund bin ich auch stolz auf unser Land und ärgere mich, wenn die Grünen zur WM meinen, wir sollten unsere Fahnen nicht so heftig schwingen. Es gibt sicherlich noch viel zu tun, aber in meinen Augen hilft es mehr, mit Respekt auf das Erreichte zu blicken, als immer nur "Mistkübel" über sich auszukippenl Im Gegenteil: wir müssen das Erreichte bewahren! Aus diesem Grund plädiere ich auch eher für Integration von Einwanderern in unserer Wertegesellschaft als für "friedliche Koexistenz" unterschiedlicher Werte.

@@idgafur Reise mal in den Iran bevor du alles aus deinen Medien glaubst. Im Iran kannst du Schwule offen auf der Straße sehen. Homosexualität ist nicht einmal verboten. Und für Transsexuelle wird eine Geschlechtsumwandlung staatlich finanziert, siehe z.B. die Trans-Aktivistin Maryam Khatoon Molkara. Du kannst sogar problemlos offen Prostituierte sehen (sowohl weibliche als auch männliche), Kondome können die sich kostenlos anholen. Prostitution ist zwar offiziell verboten, aber geschriebene Gesetze sind nicht immer und überall die Realität. Selbst in Deutschland, siehe z.B. dass Homosexualität bis 1994 offiziell strafbar in Deutschland war (§ 175 StGB) oder dass die Todesstrafe laut hessischer Verfassung immer noch eine gültige Strafmaßnahme ist.

@@MahanUSW Homosexualität mag nicht verboten sein. Homosexueller Sex ist es allerdings und die Strafe ist offiziell der Tod. Wie wurden homosexuelle vor 1994 in der BRD bestraft? Tod? Nach der Reform der hessischen Verfassung 2018 ist die Todesstrafe abgeschafft.

@@idgafur Die Strafe ist nicht immer offiziell Tod, nur in bestimmten Fällen. Und bei Frauen nie. Außerdem sind offiziell immer 4 Zeugen notwendig. Praktisch wird es aber gar nicht vollstreckt. Wenn du dir Fälle anguckst, die in Deutschland so propagiert werden, als wenn sie gehängt wurden, weil sie homosexuell wären, wirst du feststellen, dass sie entweder Kinder entführt und vergewaltigt haben oder Drogenschmuggler waren (der Iran befindet sich mitten in der Heroin-Route nach Europa).

In Mecklenburg Vorpommern people are very unfriendly, unpleasant and hostile, even towards each other among Germans, let alone towards foreigners. In big cities like Hamburg and Berlin (in the western part of course), you'll have fewer problems, if any at all.

Very good and interesting topic. I studied one-semester at a university in Germany. Usually, I would take the bus at the same time. Most of the time it was the same driver. He would say something between his teeth and turn very red, like angry. I didn't understand what he said to me but I didn't need to understand. Although I would greet him with a "Guten Morgen", he didn't like to see me in his bus. That was in a small town called "Schloss Holte - Stukenbrock. But that was not as bad as going to church every Sunday and no one would talk to me or made me feel welcomed. I was there too for their Christmas activities. After 4 months of going to that church, nobody seated next to or around me. People could clearly see me. I have dark skin :-) I loved being in Germany, and I would go back if I could, but those two examples were not my imagination. there were very real and strange.

I think that's a very likely scenario, and I believe you 100%. That being said, just to give a full context, very small towns in Germany are usually very conservative, tight-knit groups. Even a German moving in from another region might be labelled an 'outsider' ('Fremder') for years when living there. Small towns in Germany can be very much hit and miss, and -- in my experience -- they expect the newcomer to make a step towards them. I'm sorry you had to go through that.

I'm learning german and this video made me think about if I really want to visit this country, so sad

I think there are a lot of it in Bayern. Because I have lived here for three years. And experienced tons of it. Just try your best to live in bigger cities like berlin and Hamburg otherwise it's pretty hard

I hate it that women in developed countries feel "discriminated" for being asked question about having babies or just for earning a few bucks less than men, this ladies don't realize that most women around the world are suffering actual discrimination, in some rural communities of my country, young women are still being sold as some sort of commodity.

@@mihaelarotund5271 Settle for less? Let me enlighten you as to why women in the western world earn less. They work less, they work at lower positions with lower pay grades and consistently choose family over career to a higher degree than men. Because that's the most sound economical choice for most families. They do not, I repeat, they do not, earn less for the same job and the same position. Same thing whether you look at Germany or the US.

And the fact that you said men are not putting family over carrer is bullshit, if you are man you basically don't even need to choose , you don't give birth, you don't need to stay and recover after it, stay with a baby 24/7. So, I am not even saying give the same money to a woman that is in this situation and a man who has basically the same job, I am saying give equal amount of money to the woman that chose to put carrer first because she actually sacrificed a lot and just the fact that she is a woman should not be a disadvantage.

M Rostov Of course I’m generalizing. If you read what I wrote again you will notice wordings such as “to a higher degree” and “most”, but that doesn’t make it less valid. There are always exceptions to the rule. Not all orchs are evil, right? :) However, I’m sorry but biology doesn’t care what you consider to be disadvantages or not. And if you think staying home with a child is a disadvantage, you are seeing the situation from a false feminist perspective according to which raising children has less value than a career. Also, it has been shown that the more liberal a society is in terms of gender roles, the more women and men choose professions “typical” for their gender/sex, which belies the idea that it’s some sort of coercion.

@@Jens0880 I am not saying it's not awarding for women to raise children, of course it is for some but maybe for others doing what they love considering the profesional pursuit they followed it's even more awarding. It dosn't matter in what kind of carrer,and btw how can you tell which professions are made for women and men? considering the fact that in the past people used to say women could never do some of the things they do today , and even succed in . I get that a traditional point of view is more common and natural to some people but don't expect all of the women to agree with it, there is always room for better in any aspect of equality.

Warum sollte es Diskriminierend sein nach der Familienplanung zu fragen? Ist einfach ne andere Frage für "Werden sie in nächster Zeit Arbeitsunfähig sein aufgrund des Mutterschutzes?" Oder seh ich da was falsch?

Frauen werden meist nicht eingestellt, wenn sie Kinder wollen. Deutschlands Bevölkerung geht zurück, also müssen die Deutschen mehr Kinder bekommen, um dem Rückgang entgegen zu wirken. Wenn Frauen aber wegen ihrer Familienplanung keine Arbeit finden, entscheiden sie sich wahrscheinlich gegen Kinder und für die Arbeit. Es würden noch weniger Kinder geboren werden.

Ausserdem ist es gesetzlich verboten, sowohl in Deutschland als auch in anderen Ländern zum Beispiel in Ungarn. Trotzdem fragen sie danach, und Frauen mit Kinder werden oft nicht eingestellt, und sie verdienen auch weniger als Männer in der gleichen Position.

Kita-Jahr bedeutet Kindertagesstättenjahr. In DE ist meist das dritte von 3 Jahren Kita gebührenfrei. Alle Parteien fordern mehr Bildung, weil es alle fordern, ist es eine Forderung unisono (=einstimmig -> alle sagen das Gleiche).

Disrimination is everywhere. When it comes to having ideas about a certain group of people i think that the only way to a better understanding is talking and communicating, i have faced descrimination in my home country too. Now in Germany i go to a language school with classmates from different countries, when you stand far from people it is easy to have wrong ideas about them but when you just listen to everyone's story you understand that we are altimately the same, so we should not let skin color, language, religion or background fool us and encage us in stupid strong opinions about people who don't look like us.

The only country? I don't think so. Discrimination is everywhere. For example I live in Hungary, and here is a lot of discrimination too: towards women, homosexuals, people with different skin colour... 😢

Ja, das ist ein extrem personelle Frage und absolut nicht in Ordnung. Die männer werden nie so was gefragt. Sollen auch nicht fragen ob jemand verheiratet ist.

Bevor man über Diskriminierung spricht, sollte man vorher definieren. Da scheint es, dass viele Leute null Ahnung darüber haben. Zum Beispiel die beide Frauen, die sie gesagt haben, dass sie Diskriminierung erlebten, konnten nicht genaue beschreiben das, was sie erlebten. Natürlich gibt's Diskriminierung überall. Aber das heißt nicht, das wenn man zum Beispiel mein Hautfarbe oder Haare oder was ich anhabe komisch findet, dass ich diskriminiert wurde.

ali barre Begriffe wie "Diskriminierung", "Rassismus", "Rechtsextrem" werden ja mittlerweile bedeutungslos, da sie von jedem benutzt werden der nicht in der Lage ist die Verantwortung für das eigene Versagen zu tragen und stattdessen es für besser hält den Finger auf die Einheimischen zu zeigen und denen böse Absichten zu unterstellen.

Genau. Ich habe hier kein einziges Beispiel für echte Diskriminierung gehört. Dass ein Arbeitgeber über zukünftigen Pläne (z. B. Schwangerschaft) informiert werden möchte, oder dass Menschen Personen aus sehr unterschiedlichen Kulturen anders behandeln, ist in allen vernünftigen Gesellschaften nichts Ungewöhnliches. Das ist reiner Instinkt und es gibt gute Gründe dafür. Und warum solltest du beispielsweise nicht eher geneigt sein, eine Person einzustellen, die eher wie du denkt, eher wie du sich verhält und wahrscheinlich eher wie du auf unerwartete Situationen reagiert?

Perhaps they didn't wish to go into particulars on camera and/or were for example refering to sexual harassment situations which are gender-based and are therefore a kind of discrimination.

This video really makes Germany sound like a scary place! I've never been there, but it makes me not want to ever be there. Does Easy German realise this? And I must say I've seen several videos by Easy German where germans are basically described as incredibly unfriendly people that I wouldn't like to be around, no joke! It makes me question why I even bother to learn german at all! But then I read some of the comments and I see a totally different picture. I'm confused... maybe the "german guilt" many poeple talk about is a real thing. I would love a video on that! And I would like to see some proud germans in your videos, if there are any around!

Liebe Cari, ich bin eine Studentin der Uni Jena. Als ich früher mit Deutsch angefangen habe, fande ich (und finde ich immer noch), dass eure Videos toll sind. Habe selber in Leipzig für 6 Monate gewohnt und die Stadt und die Leute dort sind sympathisch . Habt ihr Lust, mal dorthin zu fahren und ein Video zu drehen? the type of discrimination i experienced in austria actually (but heard the same about germany) was that people ignored us generally, on a regular basis we were ignored all the time, people wouldn't talk to us or even look at us, actually i never met any non austrian friend of mine who had an austrian friend, maybe it's not like that in germany.

@@pinkgirl6619 yes i know europeans are shy and quiet in general, but they sometimes have a prejudice toward others, this is something we can always see. of course 2-3 times i also encountered a little more violent racism like shouting "scheisse auslaender" or the name of the Fuehrer in my face :) but it was rare, i'm not complaining, i stayed there for several years and returned home after my graduation, so it's all good.

Try to be christian in arab country, and you will see what discrimination is like.

Eh, Lebanon is 50% Christian and it is written in their constitution that the president must be Christian. 20% of the Palestinians are Christian, etc.

I felt discriminated at in Mexico. The locals would mumble "puto" or "pinche" and other things thinking I would not hear or understand them. The locals would also try to overcharge me when ever they could.

It was super interesting to watch this video of how discrimination is viewed in Germany. However, discrimination is unfortunately pervasive throughout the world. In fact, there has been discrimination since time immemorial. Perhaps it is simply based on fear and being uninformed (or misinformed), which was why I admired the lady who made an emphasis on education at a very young age. Robert, UK.

Well said Nathan. 👍👍👍. I am an Asian who lived in many countries. Yes, I got discriminated against for my brown skin even when I lived in Bangkok, Thailand. Now I live in Germany. Discrimination exists everywherw where there are human beings unfortunately. Some Thais have a high opinion about white-skinned people (Westerners) and constantly discriminate (passively) against brown/black skinned people. Some people are really ignorant.

I know no place with 0 discrimination. I have been living one year in Germany and I have not experienced discrimination (not directly*). At the beginning it was difficult to tell because people here stares... but they do that with everybody. I have experienced and witnessed more discrimination in my country than here, and I have examples. *once there was a woman in the train singing the German national anthem with the 'forbidden' parts and saying things against migrants, but she didn't seem to be very healthy, she was talking to herself.

It's because many Germans are secretly racist compared to other countries! That woman was expressing on the train what many Germans really feel inside. In my first years in Germany when I didn't speak the language and didn't have much contact with people, I didn't feel discrimination directly either!
