Discovering Tibetan Nepal: Manaslu Circuit Trekking, Nepal Himalaya

21 days of silent hiking on the Manaslu Circuit, through the Nepal Himalayas, close to Tibet and Annapurna. Join my friend Hung and I on our trek through narrow valleys, along rushing rivers, and over majestic mountains. Rest with us at a Tibetan monastery, go hiking with dogs, goats, yaks, and donkeys, and experience authentic Tibetan and Nepalese life. Trek was in December 2021.

Prayer flags sending wishes in the wind with every thread, sunsets setting fire to the mountains, cheery nuns cooking nourishing treats over a crackling fire, energetic monks playing football over a cliff, loyal dogs guiding lost trekkers along the trail, squeaky prayer wheels spinning endlessly, furry yaks eying strange non-furry humans curiously from afar, swaying bridges hanging high above rushing teal-colored rivers, weary donkeys hauling heavy supplies, shoes sinking abruptly into the snow, majestic mountain goats strutting across the field, milk tea melting treacherously frozen lakes, all powered by Dal Bhat 😋
There were countless little beautiful moments on this trip. We went during the off-season, which primarily meant cold and snow. But it also meant empty tea houses and every opportunity to sit in the kitchens while the tea house owners cooked us dinner, and made a roaring fire with equally warming conversation (most of which we couldn’t understand as it was in Tibetan 😄).

Because of the Dalai Lama's association with the CIA, (credit MIT world history) and the US State Department's funding of the DL's compound in Dharmasula, (credit US State Department website), I'm careful what views I accept. My wife is Tibetan, because there were no roads, bridges, airports, trains, indoor plumbing, hospitals, schools, electricity, or infrastructure under the DL, she had to hike with her sick mother and family from Lhasa to the Chinese border as a 12 year old child. I love the entire region including Xin Jiang, but the politics sicken me.

I am from Himachal, India. Dharamshala is kind of like overrated by foreigners and is nothing beautiful according to Himalayan standards imo. There are more beautiful places like Manali, Parvati Vallley, Lahaul Valley, Spiti Valley, Kinnaur, Ladakh that you could visit. The landscape is more beautiful and the surrounding mountains are way bigger. Although if you do want to visit Dharamshala, try doing Indrahar pass trek if you can or you can go upto Triund.

Nicholas, your trekking video was like an meditation exercise for me. So tranquil, constantly on the move, no needless hurry, a beautiful story weaved through the magnificence of the Himalayas, Nepal & Tibet border. You & your partner's spinning the prayer wheels at every monastery was truly spiritual & playing with cute pups & furry friends was so genuine. I thought the smart black four legged fella would accompany you guys till the end, he was a traveler. Also, the various cuisines shown along the way were pretty appetizing. Many thanks & kudos on a fantastic travelling experience. Wish to see more of this. I do wish to undertake some of these journeys at 66, let's see how far i succeed in that bucket list.

Manaslu Circuit with Tsum Valley is a good one then! There is a circular route called the "Kyimolung Pilgrimage" that crosses through Tsum and Nubri valleys, and into Tibet. You can't do the entire loop unless you have permission to enter Tibet (and a Chinese visa). But if you do the Tsum + Manaslu circuit you will be able to do nearly half of it and see many Tibetan Buddhist sites. What do you think? Feel free to send me an email if you'd like more details 😊

In April of 2015, I was booked to go from Qingdao, China to Kathmandu, Nepal. I had already rented a motorcycle, in advance, because scooters and motorcycles are not easily rented after you arrive. Wham bang, the 7.1 Nepal earthquake struck and there was no airport in Nepal. I called China Eastern and they suggested I trade my ticket for. a different destination. Of the choices, Taiwan proved to have the best connections. I enjoyed Taiwan but wish I could visit Nepal. I'm 73 in September and I may not make it back to Nepal. Win a few, lose a few, and a few get rained out. Satchel Paige.

The whole border area next to Tibet is more Tibetan than Nepalese. Actually the word "Nepal" meant only the Kathmandu Valley as recently as 50 years ago. There are many places where both trade and social contacts are mostly across the border to Tibet, not Hindu Nepal. Just think of Dolpo, upper Mustang, east Nepal like Olangchung Gola and Thudam region (they do not care about the hindu laws protecting cows there as an example). Even Khumbu is "Tibetan", even though the border traffic has been there suppressed and commercialisation has made the villages look like resorts. Also the languages spoken in those areas are actually Tibetan dialects.
