Discovering Major Taylor: One Man's Perspective | A documentary on a little-known world champion.
Спорт
The life and career of Marshall W. "Major" Taylor is the ultimate underdog sports story that has never been told. Taylor rose from obscurity and overcame insurmountable barriers to become the dominant bicycle racer on three continents in track cycling's early years. He was the first African-American world champion (1899) in any sport and broke the color barrier in pro cycling's heyday (1896) at the height of the Jim Crow era in America.
Taylor's pro bike racing career included a decade of Australian and European tours and his winnings and endorsement deals quite possibly made him the highest paid athlete in any sport. All this and many more amazing facets of his story leave anyone newly discovering Taylor scratching his/her head and mumbling; "Why haven't I heard of this guy before now?".

If ever there was a time to get this made into a major feature film, it would be now.

There is more than one movie production in process. But none seem to be very well funded because they are taking so long.

@@RichardBeattie007 That's a shame Richard, I hope this gets resolved and we see something come along soon. Maybe the story just hasn't fallen into the hands of the right people.

@@nelsonhibbert5267 at least 2 biographies of Taylor have been sold for movie rights and you can search the web for a movie production in progress titled "Whirlwind" and another one by a Canadian film company. As far as a Hollywood blockbuster, Taylor's life and career is a perfect fit. The biggest reason why it hasn't happened yet might be the risky subject matter. Not Taylor's life or the racial side, but that of "bicycle racing". There are literally a handful of movies about bicycle racing and none are blockbusters. Hollywood prefers to take the easy way out and make sequels, pre-quels, re-boots, etc. That my take.
Thank you SO much for putting this documentary together Richard and Christie. I hope it continues to spread the word about this dedicated and principled racer, his success in overcoming the overcoming the myriad adverse circumstances he faced, and the illustration, in a different vein, of the idea of "it takes a village".

Thanks for watching this video. It was a labor of love that took me and my wife seven months to prepare much of it on a full-time basis and a very low budget. It was all worth it when I started getting comments and views.
One of the greatest bicycle racers and champions of all time ❤
