They are not stubborn but intelligent. They need kindness and cooperation, something that was a bit bad in the past. Today, as family ponies, they are perfect, a bit mischievous and trusting.

I live on Gotland, and am quite familiar with these wonderful little horses. They are not endangered, fear not. The breed is properly called Gotland Russ, and we don’t call them ponies, despite their diminutive size. Even though their stature is small, they have the conformation of a larger, long legged horse, and are typically quite well proportioned. They make exceptional driving horses, as we’ve seen here, and in Summer you can watch adolescent drivers race them at the trotting track here in Visby. Gotland Russ are also excellent companion animals for other horses, and many equestrians keep one or two for that purpose. The wild herd in the forests in the middle of the island is very lightly managed, a new stallion is released every three years, and yearlings are selected and sold to eager families each May. Late April or May is a good time to walk in the forest preserve; if you are fortunate you’ll come across a number of Gotland Russ dams and their foals. Bay is definitely the predominant colour, but I have seen very pretty roans as well. They are great little animals, smart, tough and full of personality.

Also a swede here, we absolutly call them ponies, just because its not in the breed name doesnt make them not a pony They arent endangered, though they are a threatened (hotad) breed with around 6000 st in Sweden (less bad but still)

Gotlandsrusset or horses that looks like them have been in Scandinavia for the last 2500 years, so Gotlandsruss was one of the breeds they took with them to Island. (small strong horses they could have on their boats). They are amazing horses, that you can use for many things. 🙂

Our neighbor lady, who was not quite 5 feet tall, was very taken with Little, yes, that was his name, and talked my brother into selling him to her. They were inseparable.

When i was a child (35+y ago), we had a pony who was half Russ but i can't remember what was the other half. He's name was Jasperi and he came as stallion, later got gelding. My mom trained him for riding amd driving and my aunt took care of him. He's best friend was a German shepherd female called Diiva and they grew up together ❤ He looked exactly like the dark hair horse in the beginning and brought up so much memories. He never hurt me, even though i was crawling under his belly but he didn't allow my friend boy to come in his enclosure. One winter we went to a Christmas church with a sleigh with him. So lovely memories ❤❤ One of the best breeds i think 🙏
