Discover The Cross Jesus Invites You To Carry (Catholic Life)

In today’s lent reflection on living the Catholic life we identity the cross that Jesus invites us to carry. Today’s meditation again comes from Divine Intimacy, meditation 129. Key quotes from our lenten reflection are below:

"The word cross, however, should not make us think only of special sufferings, which, while not excluded, are not generally our portion. First of all, we must think of those common daily disagreeable things which are part of everyone’s life and which we must try to accept as so many means to progress and spiritual fruitfulness."
"He does not want our sorrows to be sterile, but to become a cross, that is, a means of elevating and sanctifying our souls. In fact, all suffering is transformed, changed into a cross as soon as we accept it from the hands of the Savior, and cling to His will which transforms it for our spiritual advantage."
"However, to understand the value of the cross is not equivalent to bearing it; we need fortitude as well."
"Therefore, let us accept them with calmness, and not allow ourselves to be submerged by things which are unpleasant;"

Wow, such a beautiful meditation ❤. My parents both came from very poor, sad childhoods (Baptist). They raised me in a prosperity gospel (Wesleyan) church. My problems were never seen as God's work in my life or opportunities to grow. They were seen as insignificant and inconsequential. By high school, problems were even treated as ingratitude toward the material wealth they provided and lack of faith in God. Faith wasn't a way to grow in holiness; it was a way to get what you wanted. I am so glad I can see God now and His work in my life. My pain doesn't have to be a referendum against me but a connection to the Cross and how God trusts me to become more like Him. How beautiful to not have to see pain in others competitively but to see it as God's intimacy in someone else's life, God's beauty. It should make us love sharing about our pain and praying for others to grow through it rather than condemning them for having it. I realized too that invalidating or minimizing what someone else is going through really is about silencing God's work and Voice in the other person's life.

Some seem to have more than their fair share of a cross. Whether it was a bad health diagnosis for them or family members. Children with physical or mental disabilities. Financial problems, or a bad combo of all three. Yet sometimes I selfishly complain about minor crosses. For all those who have the weight of the world on their shoulders, I pray for you today!

This was just what I needed to hear today! I am caring for my elderly father because he can no longer live alone. It's a cross I didn't expect to carry right now, and my siblings aren't helping as much as I would like. But our Lord gave me a wonderful, helpful, understanding husband, and He is carrying us through this!

Such a beautiful talk. Being parents to large families can result in heavier crosses to carry. So many choose to have small families or no children at all to avoid the hard work and sacrifices being a parent brings. However, when we turn to our Heavenly Father and our Blessed Mother to aid us in carrying these crosses, our prayers are answered and our crosses become lighter to carry.

I had a stroke two years ago, and have been slowly learning the trust and patience go together. I am learning to be thankful for the grace that God has given me to see how many things in my life that I could do before I had taken from granted. I sometimes think about Job and how he bless God in everything that he received from him what he gave, and what he took away. Pride comes on many shapes in the myth of self sufficiency, that we are can do it now on our own without God is very prevalent in society, and sometimes it gets ingrained in the thinking of Christians. Now I realized that this is one of the things that I have been struggling with.

Love how you connected your response to your daughter and encouragement with God the Father. “Do you trust me?” If we hang on with TRUST in Jesus there is always a light at the end of the tunnel, a lesson learned, a Great Grace and even if the Cross is not relieved or taken away or even gets heavier, we are given the Grace, fortitude, resilience to carry it because we’re never alone! Jesus carries it with us IF we allow Him by accepting our Cross with love and trust. Without our Cross we cannot follow Him.

I thank God for giving me this calmness, and for the strength that he gives me to carry my cross.

I think that I have learned to trust in God. Although I think there will always be times in my life until the end that it'll be a struggle to accept suffering. That's when I'll turn to surrendering All to Him. In fact I try to do that on a daily basis. That way no matter what comes around I'll know He's allowing it for a reason. The last few days I've had some unexpected lower back pain. It has kept me from what I thought I'd be doing. Times like this I'm always reminded of those with chronic conditions such as back pain. I offer my pain up for them. 🙏🤲🙏 Loved the story of little one on the slopes. Your children are so blessed by having parents so in love with the Lord. 🙏💝

Simon of Cyrene (for me, this part stood out). Why? Because I've always viewed Simon of Cyrene as a hero of mine after the fact his heart was converted, as soon as he received such Grace he had a deeper understanding that Jesus Christ was innocent. It's almost like he had an illumination of conscience and he himself became angry that the Roman soldiers were treating him with so much hatred. Yes, many times I don't know how to carry my own cross and many times I ask myself, WHY ME? And focus or become overwhelmed with negative thoughts and lose my focus in offering my cross to God with Love for him. Onle last comment, Father Bill Casey once mention that 2 of Simon of Cyrene's sons became bishops of the Catholic Church. That's powerful!

Two of the most joyful days of my life were not happy days. The day Dad died. And the day Mom died. Dad's death was more predictable than Mom's. Mom's was completely unexpected, shocking, and overwhelming. But we were there, at Dad's bedside, praying, before the machine that kept his heart beating was disconnected. And I thrust my rosary into Mom's palm while she was in cardiac arrest, room full of doctors, nurses, and what seemed like dozens of medical personnel. And "we" prayed intensely. Was she already dead? Probably. Didn't matter. I wasn't taking any chances. Joyful. Not happy. Part of life. Joyful thanks to the grace of the Holy Spirit. And buoyed by my strong faith, thanks to the witness of my parents.

Luke 23:26 - As they led him away, they seized a man, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming from the country, and they laid the cross on him, and made him carry it behind Jesus. So Simon took up his cross and followed Jesus. He is presented as a model Christian. He gets a bum rap from so many people who critique him.
