Another source for pulleys is a bearing supply company. Just need the dimensions, either get a finished item or an unfinished blank just need to put the correct bore into it.

i welded a pulley on a 5 speed murray 15 years ago , and it's still going strong .

Wheel Horse tractors were just awesome until Toro bought them out. They were still pretty good even after, but not nearly as easy to work on. Probably the best of them was the cast iron Kohler C-160. Sixteen horsepower if single cylinder awesomeness. The engines are rebuildable

I had a JD LX176 where the snap rings that locate that pulley would not stay in the shaft to locate it because the grooves in the shaft were completely messed up. It started making a squealing noise and the pulley had fallen down onto the transmission. I drilled two holes in the pulley and put two all thread studs sticking up one either side of the pulley. Then I put a cross strap between them made out of 1/8 inch x 1 flat strap pinched between two nuts. I could adjust the nuts up and down to make the pulley set where it used to set and the strap was right on the end of the shaft to keep the pulley from falling on down. That was 7 years ago and is still working fine.

Taryl, I am recently disabled due to nerve damage in my back. I have worked my whole life ( about 45 years) most of them at 60 hours and to be unable to provide as I see fit for my family is a painful reminder that I am not invincible. Because of my hours working I had a bunch of neglected lawn equipment. Not having the knowledge to fix them only added to my depression. My wife bless her soul, found you on the" interscreen " and made me watch your videos. Happy to say, you gave me the incentive to "take up a hobby" and learn to fix my stuff as well as some people in town who needed a bit of service. Thank you for your knowledge in a manner that makes it easy to learn. Keep up the good work.

My poor Wizard has untold hours on it. I’ve replaced the engine, redid the transmission, put on new tires, blades, belts, and hoses, and a new seat. Pretty sure it’s a 99 or 2000. Repainted it, and it still mows great. I’ve used your videos and others to help me out. Informative and entertaining

WELD IT! My toothbrush broke this morning and I just plastic welded it. It works great! Except for it's a little crooked, like Hillary.

Hey Taryl I had this problem recently with my 2005 broadmoor. I discovered that this smaller pulley has been working fine on my mower all summer: Genuine OEM Tuff Torq 1A646025810 V-Groove Drive Pulley 4.25" - Kept the same belt just fine, very slight increase in speed. Will let you know if it turns out to be a slow moving grenade pin pull. Also noticed the belt runs deeper in the pulley on the original one and it runs along the outer edge on the alternate one - making a comparable functional circumference for the belt. Love your content, grass rats shred!

We’ve done that a lot on those automatic mowers with us tough to work transmission. Grandpa did that a lot and change the belt loop with it didn’t do anything noticeable to the transmission in speed it up enough to matter. The only thing is sometimes Brakewood hold on tighter because of the belt length would be tighter, and it would make it lurch a little bit not bad

You can cut the center out of what ever pulley you can get and weld it into the original.

As long as the customer understands what he’s getting then knock yourselves out. Well Done. Simplicity is a virtue.

Ran into that problem with my 22 year old Exmark.The deck pulley's with the bearings.. Super expensive...and super out of stock. I ground the rivets out and bought new bearings...put them back together with 1/4×1/2 bolts and loctite. Probably saved close to $80. All the other deck idlers and mule idlers I found at tractor supply...paid less than half of original equipment.

@@ryanthompson2893 they fit really well...no slop.. I've had them on for three years...no problems...no noise. I just couldn't spend that kind of cash for name brand stuff... For me..it was worth a try..it just happened to work out...this time😆

You Rock! I asked you about this a while ago and you nailed it. Simple elegant solution to weld the parts together. I fixed mine by buying a broken K57 with a threaded shaft, instead of the snap ring. I used your K46 Tough Torq video to learn how to rebuild the used trans. So grateful!!

My 10hp 1974 Simplicity Landlord I use for mowing, hauling, snow plowing. The old stuff was made great and not as hard to work on as this. Great repair on this. You're right - a dealer would never do that. The dealer I dealt with 20 years ago (sadly closed now so I can't get parts locally) was horrible. Their mechanics were the pits.

besides being a great mechanic taryl is funny and entertaining. i watch his videos even when they don't pertain to anything i'm working on. i had to scrap my campbell hausfeld air compressor because i couldn't find the parts to fix it...the no longer available issue. i learn from taryl's videos, too.

As always, when Taryl addresses his critics, the voice slays me.

I have a 38" Simplicty lawn tractor, stripe master I call it.. It's a freaking beast. No longer concerned with stripes. They just happen :) So over powered with the 21 hp break+scrapem engine. It's been retired in my garage with about 150 hours on it for many years. It's comforting to have in reserve! Thanks for the vidjo. You rock.

I would have found a pulley with 2 set screws and put that on. I have already had to replace a transmission pulley with the same issue so i went to rural king found a pulley and put it on and it worked great! I did that a year ago. You do great work Terrell. Just tossing out another suggestion. You have helped me fix a few mowers you have great skill and thank you! Tech

When I was a kid I had to change the brakes and clutch on my 86 Toyota pickup. My grandfather towed it down to his buddies house. The guy was a retired mechanic. The only problem was, that he was BLIND. He had a botched eye surgery. My grandfather said he's gonna help you, but you are gonna do the work yourself. Then my grandfather drove off. Lol That man would touch a bolt head and tell me what size to grab. It took two days, but we got it done.

Last I knew, BASCO discontinued that part because it was determined the pulley diameter was blocking airflow to the K57 causing failures. They were substituting a pulley with a smaller OD with the same ID to allow more airflow. Because the new pulley lacked the flanges to keep the belt on, the new pulley is supplied as a kit with a belt retainer. You should call your local rep.

Great repair,iv got a jd sabre with same problem but cast pulley (pos). I taped and ran set screws along side shaft and jb welded it together. Been 2 seasons of use now and no problemo.

I've found that Briggs changes the part number after so many years to make you think it's obsolete. You have to search for slightly newer models and compare the parts to see if they're the same. Often times its the exact same part with a different number. Briggs is far from the only one pulling this scam.

Great idea....love this guy! He's nuts but real, I always learn something from each episode.

I have a 1956 Simplicity 2 wheel garden plow handed down to me by my grandfather back in the 60's I'd like to restore one day.

It's always great when a firm like Simplicity, privately held, is bought out by a large firm. At one time they had outstanding support for older machines, but support for old machines doesn't pay for yachts, so there's your dinner. I guess Snapper got abandoned too? Good video, thanks.

It's not just B&S, seems no company wants to supply repair parts and many not even service literature and if they do it's only for a short time when the equipment starts to age and you need parts it's "sorry Charley" not available.

I have a 1979 Roper GT 18 and a 1979 Sears GT 18. Identical tractors both made by Roper. Both still working. I mow with one and plow snow with the other. Still working.

I worked in a small engine shop for years, it's the fumes....the fumes got to Taryl...love the channel, and I agree weld it on....good as gold!!!👍👍

Good Fix. Another method: drill a 1/4 inch hole, on the seam where it is spinning. Half on inner pulley ring, half on driveshaft. Tap for fine threads, then install a grade 6 or higher, bolt, of shorter length than the hole/threads you made. Tighten good. FIXED, and can replace later, if needed.

Yeah, that's what I did on a old rusty dolly wheel that split. My dad left it out in the rain etc. You know: the solid wheel type with a rim that's made from two pieces that have four spot welds. I drilled out the welds and reassembled with 1/4-20 hardware. That was in 2006, it's still working today... outlived dad!

One reason why Daryl welded it was because the i.d. of the pulley was worn. Yeah, could have applied your remedy, cleaned up the bore on a lathe, and sleeved the transmission shaft... and it would go another 15 years. But , I think that the customer wanted a low cost, quick fix.

That’s a good fix, I ran into a similar problem fixing a Deere 214 the deck drive double pulley bearings where gone and the shaft was worn in half so I got two pulleys from tractor supply one I tig brazed a bearing into the other already had a bearing in it, I then used a press in bearing case from a car bearing to space the pulleys and welded them together, sometimes you have to improvise , overcome and adapt 👍

I took a worn shaft to the company machine shop once to get a new one turned. Well they did a GREAT job, a perfect match right down to the worn areas. LOL Six months into the first year Tahoe came out needed new wheel bearings. Chevy didn't even have a part number for them. Ended up going to a bearing store with them and they looked up the serial number on them. $20 and I was on my way home to install.

That thing was really in great shape, for being 20 years old..... Looked great... Bodywork was sharp, appeared intact... Not crashed into every tree in the yard repeatedly... Someone actually takes some care of that thing.... I always kinda chuckle... Guys in our age bracket (roughly) will look at a 2002 tractor (or whatever) and say, like you did in the video "It's not that old!". Where like, my nephew, you can see his face cringe, when I say that... To him, it's older than HE is, therefore, it is an ancient dinosaur, and it's a miracle it still runs at all, being such an antique..... Heh heh heh!

i usually dont like to repair things like this. but if its for a customer, he wants it cheap. and if the customer already asks for welding... well yes. i once welded a wiperblade arm on the wiper mechanic, because a customer didnt want to pay for a propper repair. Although i struggled pretty hard to get used to your disguise, i really like your videos and have learned a lot.

I've got a 2011 Conquest (Simplicity). Love the thing... no mower deck, but has a Johnny Bucket Jr. Holy tamole is that little unit slick. I can tote almost 500# of firewood in it. It's got a tooth bar and She'll Dig. The best part... handling the weight in the front is no problem; it's got real, no bs, power steering. I'm talking Danfoss steering unit, cylinder that runs off the Tuff Torq, but still maintains the Tiny steering radius... What a blast. Also, the auto-choke briggs never gives me one bit of trouble. Only thing it needs a larger battery (Batt-ry, Taryll), but they left enough room that the big Yuasa that came with my excavator just fits Exactly in. Love Simplicity... the very last of real true full US made riders. Look at how well fitted those handles were he removed and how the fender pan was thicker/heavier than he expected. The new ones have a full Four Wheel suspension, and a high speed tranny to let you go faster over your bumpy yard. And you can find 'em used for Cheap 🐦. I'm telling ya, those Johnny Buckets are so handy and practical, you won't believe it. No loader arms to bend, you can Slam right into snow, ice, soil. Grab one if you can find one, but remember to mount it to something that can handle it, or just expect to give attention to your lighter machine's front end, or just sacrifice it and get a new one to mount the bucket on. I'm telling you, the tight turning circle with the stout Johnny Bucket is a hoot to use and so useful too 👍 ~

Great fix Taryl! Ran into that a few times myself!

Recently worked on an old Simplicity 18 Hydro and the center spindle and pulley were beyond stripped. Replacements available but insanely expensive. Put in new bearings and welded the pulley to the shaft. Yeah, next bearing change is gonna involve a plasma gouging but it has the tractor running and working without spending more than the machine is worth.

Always great tips that could also be applied in other situations.

It made by briggs there were rob by there CEO and went out business during COVID-19 in 2020 the new brigs as some company bought up name and factory and will make few items for few more years. Once there go all china we never cut our lawns again .

I run my parents 96 JD lawn tractor alot as a workhorse and it still has the original transmission and hardware associated with it. We maintain everything and clean it as needed and are never rough or abusive.

When you are forced to either part out the tractor or do something drastic. Sometimes the best solution is to go ahead take matters in your own hands and get her done. Very nice job grass rats

Funny this video popped up as I'm going to look at a mower identical to this one, it appears to be in good shape and I know he took care of it, even after the video I'll still probably buy it

I was hoping to learn some secret fix for this, I’ve welded several that I couldn’t find pulleys for. I ran a garden hose under the pulley to keep the heat out of the transmission and not melt the fan, but it worked and saved the customer from having to buy a new mower.

Briggs and Scrap-Iron is a classic one here in Northern California that I hear at my shop, I have no problem with Briggs, easy to get parts (as long as customer has model, type and code which is only about 10% of the time when they call) and easy to work on.

Great video and great fix Taryl. It would be nice if these companies would maintain a parts inventory for their older machines. Sadly, they won't do it because it is one of several contributing factors to driving down the sales of newer machines. Watching this video makes me wish I were a machinist.

Companies make a ton of money selling used parts. I doubt new tractor sales are the only reason, there must not be enough demand to make keeping these parts in production economical.

The reason they stop stocking parts is because the traffic is too slow to pay for manufacturing & storage. Unless you want to pay $400 for a pulley. Try buying any part for a metal lathe, even the simplest parts can cost more than you paid for the used machine.

I actually found a new pulley for my similar broadmoor same part number, after watching this video like a year ago. I made it a mission to find one and did from a dealer/shop in the UK. Had it shipped here no problem and now it's sitting in the box in my shop. Hopefully I'll never need it but I'll be damned if I give up my mower because I couldn't get one, you lit the fire in my --- to do it. lol He said he can still get them yet over there. So if this guy still would like a new one for this one I may be able to get one. "Taryl Rules All"

I have a similar design pulley system on my John Deere (ish) mower. The rear drive pulley will always be running at idle, use your parking brake to stop wearing down that pulley and belt! I'm pretty sure it's in the manual. I bought mine used so I didn't have the manual, I had just realized a LOT of driving components were running at idle unless the parking brake is engaged.

You are right nothing has ever simple
