    To verify that your voltmeter works, you should set it to read Ohms and touch the leads together, if it reads zero ohms or very close to zero then that means that the leads are both working and able to give you accurate readings

    As a tow truck operator I wish the NTHSA would require an emergency disconnect like the engine kill on race cars. At accident scenes it is a lot of work to get to all the stuff you had to do for just a repair. Much less worrying that the car body may be energized due to a pinched cable. Great video though, thanx for the info.

  • @Sergio8191994

    @Sergio8191994

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hybrid batteries should only be replaced by professional/certified technicians due to the safety equipment and training required. The courses and qualifications for a L3 ASE Technician in the US to safely work on Hybrids is around 12-36hours of safety and practical training as well as purchasing specialized High Voltage tools and Personal protective equipment. By all technical standards replacing the battery is not difficult but the risk of Electrocution is substantial and is not a job that should be handled unless you are absolutely certain you know what you are doing and have measures to protect yourself in the event of an accident. It would be the equivalent of asking if fixing the power line to your house is something you can do yourself. It's 250-800 volts, it is not something you should take lightly.

  • @Sergio8191994

    @Sergio8191994

    Lol, I hope you're joking 😂. If you are doing welding on a hybrid chassis it is best to remove the hybrid battery before any prior work and ensure there is no residual voltage in the system. Make sure you have a clean, well connected, ground and welding can be done. I should note that modern vehicle computers such as blind spot monitors and ABS control can be damaged if excessive current from a weld is too close. Welding near or on a hybrid system is okay but precautions for each vehicle varies on each manufacturer. Even non-Hybrid BMW or Ford modules can be damaged if the frame is welded before disconnecting the connectors.

  • @Sergio8191994

    @Sergio8191994

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hybrid vehicles usually do not use a starter motor to start the vehicle. They use the electric motor that powers the wheels to also start the vehicle and is powered by the High Voltage battery and no current Hybrid vehicles above 250V use a standard starter motor to start the engine. Vehicles that use a starter with a Start/Stop function (that turns the engine off/on in stop/go traffic) can be replaced safely by disconnecting the 12V battery but must be replaced with starters that can handle being turned on/off 30-40 times per day (which are very expensive)

    This video is mostly wonderful, except how did you gain access to an UNCOVERED power invert? In my 2005 rPrius removing THAT cover requires many additional hours of labor. Removal of the windshield washer assembly, above the back or the inverter cover, is required to access the last few cover bolts. So it comes down to how confident can someone who wants to weld on this type of vehicle be that simply removing the orange service plug will be ENOUGH to guarantee they are working on a disconnected High Voltage Battery, without potentially killing the welder and/or the 2005 Prius. Please address allowing access to this important multimeter safety check. The lives of all the well intentioned shade tree mechanics who'd like to SAFELY repair this type of hybrid depend on access to the power inverter terminals shown in your video.
