Disaster! Rear wheel bearing fail on my Honda NC750X

In this video I am replacing the rear wheel bearing in my Honda NC750X due to it failing. I replaced the OEM bearing with a Timpkin bearing 6204-ZZ OR SKF 62004 deep grooved.

    The mechanics of today which they call " Techs " are mainly parts replacers. Like everything else today things are not made to be fixed or repaired. Throw away and use a new part and so on... it does not pay anymore to repair. Cheaper to replace. As a Mechanic form long ago I saw this when working at a Harley Davidson Dealership many years ago when they started not rebuilding the old generators which we always did to just replace with aftermarket junk... way of the modern world.. The wheel material for whatever reason was too soft or the cheap bearings were not made with or installed with tight tolerances ... Honda is basically bullet proof , at least they used to be. Sad...     Agree with your description of today's mechanics. They could be replacing parts on washing machines. Old school proper mechanics are a dying breed. Thanks for watching

    The problem is mechanics tend to use rattle guns & over tighten wheel axles ,crushing the bearings into the wheel bearing housing . This is why they should be torqued up using a torque wrench ,or care taken not to over tighten if no torque wrench is available . The modern wheel axle nuts are nylon lined lock nuts which are easily over tightened . The older type wheel axel nuts ,tended to be of the castellated type with a split pin ,which were tightened up until the split pin could just be inserted in the slot in castellated nut & hole in axle thread . As long as the correct amount of spaces & washers on axle were present ,there was little chance of ham fisted grease monkeys over tightening axle nuts .

    Good video. I have an NC750S. Ive looked at some forums and the reference something to do with a spacer that is not long enough on the rear wheel for the bearings. My bearings have failed 3 times now and im on 40k now. Have you heard anything about this?

    The rear wheel must be torqued up to 98Nm and no more or it crushes the spacer between the bearings. If you are on the third set of bearings the spacer could already be crushed and every time you put new bearings in and tighten the wheel up it will over load the bearings and they will just keep failing. A guy in the USA made a new spacer up him self slightly longer ( don't know how much ) to over come the problem. When you fit new rear wheel bearings always put bearing lock on them as you fit them to stop them moving around in the wheel hub or they will knacker up the wheel as in my case.

    I’ve found that it’s much easier and safer to do my own work on bikes, some of the work done by a certain so called mechanic local to me is nothing less than shocking, wouldn’t trust them as far as I could throw them,

    Unfortunately there are so many mechanics that are no more than parts fitters these days. I would never trust anyone with my bikes.

    It's the problem with all thinks nowadays , Chinese parts hiding away in otherwise well made products. BMW had the same issues on their GS's years ago, now they have whole engines made in China ! ... wouldn't touch one with a barge pole.😊

    I have a Chinese built Suzuki motorcycle ,it’s as well made & reliable as any Suzuki built in Japan i owned in over 50 years of riding motorcycles . The top Chinese factories can produce to any quality or price point the costumer requires ,they have all the latest tech & precision engineering machinery available ,hence why many well known motorcycle brands ,source parts ,engines & even whole bikes built for them in China . Every modern vehicle ,ship & aircraft on the planet ,will have at least a few components sourced from China .

    .I have to agree , there will be no bikes from China in my garage nor any BMW/KTM/Husqvarna etc with major Chinese components . They are only built there because the Chinese work for cheap and their govt is hungry for foreign cash and some of our Western companies are greedy . When I was a kid " made in Japan " meant crap , then a few years later it was "made in Hong Kong " , and now it's "made in China" or " made in India ". What will be the next less developed country , prepared to work ultra cheap, to build our stuff ?

    @@dungspreader The thing was back then the Japanese bikes weren’t crap ,they were oil tight ,reliable & started first time even in the cold & wet British winters we had in the early 1960 ‘s . The British & European bikes leaked oil ,not as reliable as the Japanese bikes , also the plastic on the Japanese bikes was stronger than it looked & rust proof . Company’s like Honda Suzuki ,Yamaha are not going to risk their reputations on Chinese factory’s that can’t meet their standards & criteria . Nor is the other big name players .The top Chinese factory’s are on another level compared to the Chinese factories churning out cheap low end generic motorcycles of around 10 to 15 years ago .

    @@maskedavenger2578 . I wasn't specifically referring to motorcycles but consumer goods in general and how the quality improved over time . The point was that we westerners are always looking for a patsy to make our crap for cheap . And I do remember the early Japanese bikes that were fine when new but quickly deteriorated and were uneconomical to repair ,The irony is that there appears to be a lot more classic British and European bikes still around than Japanese . You buy Chnese if you want to . But I have a problem buying from a regime that has slaughtered so many millions of it's own citizens . Oh and the last Chinese bearings that I was supplied with [ in Canadian packaging ] were garbage .

    Very interesting and informative about the rear wheel bearing problem as I'm thinking about buying an NC 750X A friend is selling one and it's a DCT. How reliable are those boxes in your opinion. Many thanks for your anticipated reply

    I would say very reliable. In general the Honda NC750 is one of the most reliable bikes on the market. The only reason I am selling mine is that I want another retro bike@@raymondwilkinson9255

    It looks like Honda machined a little too much metal out of the hub centre . Which is not like Honda at all . This is a bit concerning as it could be dangerous if not caught in time . I'm sure that any NC owners will thank you for bringing this to their attention . I'm having a few problems myself , with bearings from those inscrutable yellow gentlemen from Shanghai . All bearings are not created equal .

    The standard factory bearings on most bikes were never the best quality no matter which manufacturer . It was standard practice to replace things like wheel bearings with SKF or Alpha bearings & drive chains with better quality chains as they wore out & due for replacement.. A lot of motorcycle manufactures skimp on the grease during assembly ,these days ,you might find a trace on the steering bearings if you’re lucky .

    In fairness it's the first time I've ever really had a problem with a Honda.
