    My friend was on board that plane. My classmates and I were only 12 at the time, it was horrifying for us to find out. She was on her way to Singapore for new years but instead this happened. Her entire family was with her on that flight, that was the only shred of comforting information I had - that she wasn’t alone in her last moments. Her grandmother still comes by my school almost everyday. Before she and her brother died, her grandma used to pick them and their cousin up daily. Now, instead of picking up 3 grandkids, she picks up 1. I can never and will never imagine the loss and emptiness she feels. My whole class calls her “bobo”, the indonesianized version of ‘grandmother’ in Mandarin Chinese. In a way, we’re all her grandkids. That can never fill up the whole that my friend and her entire family left, but I hope that gave her some kind of comfort over the 6 years I saw her there. My classmates and I are 18 now and her birthday just passed this September. I hope that wherever she is, she can still celebrate it. She lives on through us all, in our memories and hearts; you won’t be forgotten, Kath. Rip Kathleen, Grayson, and fam. We miss you. ❤️

    When flying an aircraft, you never ASSUME anything, you either KNOW, or you ASK. Whenever I was flying with my instructor we had a very clear dialect which goes along the lines (Instructor) "your airplane" (me): "my airplane " or (Instructor) "I have control" (me) "you have control" this simple procedure stops one pilot pulling up while the other tries pulling down. The golden role "Aviate, navigate, communicate, Especially, when the unexpected happens. This is another sickening case where an accident was totally preventable. Nice one as always TFC

    Yeap, those smallest communications are critical. I was a PIC on a Piper and on the right seat was much more experience pilot. I did most of the flying except on final, this guy started grabbing yoke pretty hard, so I pretty much let him do it. It was before I watch most of ACIs and didn't know no more than what's taught in school. No one clearly said my control, and soon I experienced the hardest landing. Right seat guy said, he didn't land, and I said I wasn't flying. About a year later before he left country, he confessed he made that bad landing.

    The “I have flight controls” was one of the first things I leaned in ground school, even on my introductory flight I was just naturally doing that. That’s what strikes me as odd about this crash in particular, that lack of communication.

    Yeah that was a good addition to the video. I always fly airasia. I hear that bark very often so it makes the story extra immersive. It's just like our everyday flights. We hear the same thing on the flights but for just this one time nobody reached the destination.

    The "dog bark" is from one of the systems doing a self test called the PTU. The flaps have a more constant sound

    sazzlepop He uses a game - XPlane or P3D so he just records the screen, but I admire how much effort he puts into making these videos, he even uses the ground service vehicles

    It’s worrying most of the crashes appear to be pilot error and in an emergency end up crashing the plane. This seemed to be a minor issue, but time and again pilots do not follow procedure and make matters worse. Automation is great when it works, but pilots appear clueless when they have to fly the plane.

    I always think that when I watch these. Not only that they actually paid for their own death, set in stone the moment they put their credit card details into the website. At that moment they were already dead unless they missed the flight for some reason. Trippy and tragic.

    14:12 How are the pilots not to blame here? Literally the moment they took control of the plane all hell broke loose. On top of the fact the captain playing maintenance man should never be resetting the circuit breaker mid flight. Plane was fine, humans crashed that beautiful A320!

    I agree, however this was both mechanical and pilot error. Captain got inpatient, but when he tried to take control he didn't hold the button on his sidestick long enough to gain control. However, the RTLU system was malfunctioning.

    @@Chard2134 I agree that there were multiple faults but in the end it was pilots that did fly a working plane to the ocean. The pilots and maintenance crew were skipping rules a lot which caused the initial computer fault that caused to plane to fly in "alternate law" or "direct law" mode which you can think as "no auto-brake" and "no auto-steering" in a driving game on a console. A competent pilots should be able to fly the plane without such aids.

    Yea unfortunately south east Asia doesn’t have the best reputation when it comes to training their pilots. I lived in Bali for a year and hated the idea of taking Air Asia or lion air.

    Modern Day Jay I'm a native, I have been using Adam Air, Lion Air and Air Asia Indonesia ti travel around so far. For super short haul flights, Lion Air is okay, but if you wanted to fly a bit longer, for noe Garuda Indonesia is one of the few Indonesian airliners that I think is safe and comfortable enough

    Root problem... pilots that cannot fly an airplane. They spend thousands of hours entering waypoints into the computer that flies the plane.

    yes.. after the aircraft banked left the FO turns the stick hard to the right because he was too panicked about the situation, and he got spatial disorientation too, which cost him 162 lives including himself

    ws 12 was the opposite with Air France flight 447 where the first officer was trying to climb when the second officer was trying to descend. They cancel out and cause a stall

    It's not your fault. Shared nationality isn't a reasonable basis for blaming other people in what someone else did. I don't think that pulling nose up is a "French" trait. It's a result of insufficient training of modern pilots who are basically "plane operators" rather than the pilots.

    This is exactly like the Air France flight where the pilots managed to lose control of the aircraft at high altitude after the auto-pilot had been disengaged, how hard is it to read the artificial horizon...ffs.

    Jeremie Ragois One has to wonder whether there are inherent aerodynamic design flaws in the A-320’s and A-330’s which make them unstable at high altitude or whether its just a systemic issue with pilot’s being trained to rely on the automation in the cockpit.

    Pilot Derrick understood, however why did the aircraft roll to the left as soon as the flight controls went into alternate law??? Was it because the trim now had to be set manually or were those settimgs unaffected by the disabling of the autopilot??

    What a fantastic production. The close ups and ominous and sad music in the background during pushback lend to the drama of the passengers going to their deaths, sealed in their flying tomb. Just a fantastic simulation that puts the viewer next to and onboard that tragic flight. Awesome presentation.

    That they were. We had one as we flew to Chicago and got caught between two supercells that were trying to merge into one. At 39,000 we hit turbulence, and as we bounced up and down for about 10 minutes, nobody knew how fast a plane could really fall. THen we found out, and the amazing thing was that he warned us that there was going to be on "hell of a bump!" I didn't know it at the time, but a plane can fall as fast as 15 times terminal velosity. We had already taken a pretty bad tumble about 20-30 seconds before this one, but we never anticipated anything like what we felt. When you lose consciousness, praying to God that we don't feel it if we hit the ground, I was glad to come to with my Mom right next to me. We all had ear and tummy troubles after that one, and the turbulence took part of our landing gear, but we landed safely in Chicago around 20 minutes later. We won't ever forget that 6,000 foot plunge. I do remember the plane rocking forward and back when it all started, but I still get nervous to this day when I fly. I was so glad we had that pilot, because I don't know if anyone would have done as well today. Of course, we have much better radar, too, so that's a plus. That was in June, 1971. Sorry for the errors, too, but I tried to correct them, and my screen-reading software isn't allowing me to find and correct anything, and I use the keyboard. Hopefully I can get things squared away with the next software download. Thanks.

    Joseph Jakubec absolutely agree. The pilots now retired flew without all the automation, when there was an issue, they were very comfortable manually flying the plane. Those guys are gone now for the most part. May have some ready to retire pilots of that caliber. Wait till their gone...

    Pilots are as trusting of auto-pilot as Tesla drivers are. It's called "Auto Pilot" for simplicity, but is actually an ASSIST. It can't do everything.

    It's an Airbus, so it's actually an Autopilot. On Boeing aircraft it is an assist.

    As a pilot I can say that the autopilot does everything mate, we just have to monitor it and simply fly the plane when it disengages, which in this case the pilots failed to do for some reason.

    one of my senior in junior high school was one of the passenger in that plane. i remembered when this crashed was happened, she and her family was in the plane. everyone was so sad even the people from my school too. im sending all my prayers to all the passengers and cabin crew. couldnt imagine how they all feeling when the plane turned to left, deep condolences.

    Wonderful graphics FC. I love your work and have new reasons to look forward to FC Friday. Attention to the details of maintenance would have spared the pilot from obvious frustrations of resetting the limiters. However there is a flight rule that I was taught. In the air do not fix a problem, just reset and then solve on the ground.

    I remember this flight. I had to fly over the Java Sea just a couple months after this happened. I watched that map on the in-flight TV so hard - I was praying that we would make it over the Java Sea. It was scary, but I can't imagine how scary it was for those in this flight.

    As soon as the plane starts going down, "Power back to idle. Roll wings level using artificial horizon. Pull back to nose level. You MUST fly the aeroplane!" Panicking does not help. Training does. I flew with the RAF. Their training saved my life. It changes you when you nearly die.

    THE FAA needs to require these airliner pilots for strict MANUAL FLYING SKILLS UNDER DURESS at least once every 5 thousand miles or 5 years or whichever comes first. SOMETHING to keep them on their toes. I'm seeing this common theme over and over. One little bump in the road and these pilots flip the hell out and suddenly none of them are on the same page! It's unnecessary!

    "The final report ... did not specifically conclude that pilot error did cause the crash." Sure. Switching off vital systems because a technician on ground once did so and then not being able to fly the plane manually is no one's error. Just a fateful chain of events..

    That's crash investigation speak for saying that if everything had worked perfectly, the autopilot had taken the plane to the final airway and there wouldn't have been a crash. There was multiple failures in the chain of events but the pilots were the final problem - they couldn't fly the plane without computer assistance even though they supposedly had training for that, too.

    I'm not an aviator, but it seems that pilots are more computer techs nowadays and not pilots. A computer will never have a desire to survive when things get bad.

    Not likely of course,my sister was a flight attendant for 25 yrs.and lived to tell about it.Dont even think she ever slid off the runway.It was american airlines too,they dont seem to be featured in these vids as often as some.

    It is so that commercial pilots accumulate more flying hours than Airforce pilots, Though Airforce pilots undertake a great deal more training for emergencies. Commercial pilots must also undertake regular training in a Flight Simulator. What this Captain did was dumb, irresponsible and 'PLANE STUPID" for want of a better description. It is true that the more time you spend in bed the greater the possibility that you will die in bed. and the greater number of hours you spend in the air the greater the probability that you will die falling out of the sky. Falling out of love is less painful

    Air Asia are notorious for fast tracking their pilots through flight training programs. Personally, I would never fly with them or any other budget Asian carriers.

    Having watched more of these than I can count a nagging conclusion haunts me. In so many cases an experienced, calm and knowledgeable pilot should certainly be able to recover the aircraft before disaster strikes. Sadly it seems as if too many of the so-called pilots are only able to "fly" the plane if all the systems are functioning as designed. It's somewhat akin to painting by numbers. If the numbers are altered or removed from the equation they are unable to actually fly the plane. If that's true then flight schools need to get back to basics and teach pilots how to fly, not just turn knobs and flip switches. It is tragic that so many people die needlessly, not only in this flight but so many others. May those departed souls rest peacefully in eternity.

    I don't understand why the captain didn't take control of the flight. When your co-pilot has obviously lost his trolley, there's little point yelling out instructions to him. In too many of these videos, doofus pilots get people killed. Before, I used to be scared of mechanical faults in the aircraft. Now, I'm afraid of idiots in the cockpit. 😠 I've watched dozens of these videos and only in two cases have I applauded the pilots. One crew saved the plane, the other could not, but they fought bravely, intelligently, and professionally all the way to the ground; the loss of the aircraft was not their fault. Respect to all the good pilots out there, but curses on all the incompetent clowns who get people killed.

Under nearly all circumstances all aircraft can be manually flown, if the pilot has been trained accordingly. This is the concern - the industry has become too reliant on modern AI automation and when it fails, or flight conditions are outside of AI parameters, most pilots today have only a textbook concept of how to fly the plane. They are trained to operate flight control systems, not how to actually fly an aircraft. In fact, most advanced aviation training utilize cockpit hoods or curtains in the final stages of training to restrict the pilot's field of vision so that he only sees instrumentation and not the visual cues and sensory perceptions within and external to the aircraft. Instead of relying on actual flying skills, which are limited, they try to solve problems by overriding or "outsmarting" the flight control systems. Tragically that mindset leads to many airline disasters. Needless to say, there are conditions where no amount of training or flying skills can alter the ultimate outcome, such as catastrophic mechanical failures. Nevertheless there are examples of highly competent and experienced pilots avoiding disasters, relying solely on their actual flying skills. The core principles of flying, in the order of importance: aviate, navigate, communicate. Nowadays the term "pilot" is more akin to someone who understands the basic principles of flight and is trained to operate complex flight control systems.     Captain did a major mistake by fiddling with aircraft systems he should not touch during flight. What happened later was consequence of his stupidity. Pilots were not skilled enough to stabilize the aircraft. They both turned minor system failure info a catastrophe. What's more astonishing is the fact that investigators didn't acknowledge multiple pilots errors thus no lesson was learned from this accident. Senseless loss of lives.

Captain made a major mistake by basically turning off large portions of the electrical systems in flight, but it was a recoverable one had the FO not panicked and forgotten how to fly. Assuming the circuit breakers had not affected the instruments, they should have indicated bank angle and nose attitude. Also curious was why the Captain never said "my airplane" or some other such to get the FO to let go of his stick.

    At the time (28th) my parents just got back from Ambon with Garuda Indonesia and I remember my mom said "there's a lot of people here in Juanda because an Air Asia went missing" and I wont forget the chilling feeling days later. This tragedy, story from a colleague who knew some of the missing(dead) passengers, my alma mater's announcements of their (dead) students in that flight, and national news with our Mayor (bless your heart bu Risma) who consoled passengers family... Rest in Peace for all the Perished, and condolences to their family
