A lot of my favourite fish died whilst I was away in Texas. It was a fluke accident that has never happened whilst I have been in the studio...or any studio for that matter for the past 4 years! My wife was in charge but didn't know what to look out for and over the phone, I couldn't work out the problem.

Your Rainbow tank issue is common and is exactly why I run very coarse sponge pre filters on all of my intakes. I also always run an airstone somewhere in the tank. Placed discreetly of course. Sorry for your loss.

Sorry to hear about your rainbows. Just FYI, there’s an easy way to prevent losing your fish like this in the future. Just hook up an “old school” air pump with an air-stone as a backup when you go on a trip, they keep working even when the filter get clogged. (I have some vague recollection of a filter getting clogged when I went on vacation 30 or so years ago, and I’ve never trusted them to keep running when I was away since then.) P.S. I made my fist visit to ADG here in Houston yesterday thanks to your videos! For some reason they weren’t showing up in my online searches for aquarium/fish stores here locally and your video helped me (but not my wallet) out tremendously!

I lost five neon tetras, two panda gara's and a betta during that hot week, I've been guessing the same thing - lack of oxygen, I added an air pump and air stone but that was after the fact. Sad week, but hopefully I've learned from it, my water tested fine too, I was pulling my hair out trying to figure things out.

Suggest putting a strainer/cage on the inlet pipe of the filter, this will allow the filter to operate even with a dead fish stuck to it.

  • @baldwinbaretto2093

For your larger tanks, the inlet of the filter is a single point of failure.. maybe you can split the inlet into 2.. so that even if one is clogged, the other would keep things running

Very sad for the loss but as you say there is something that can always be learnt. My take is that the inlet to the filter seems to be more good looking than functional; thinking about the standard Oase one, it's big with a lot of surface to absorb water and probably would have been able to sustain an efficient water flow even if partially blocked.

Dude, that sucks. I had a similar issue many years ago. Now, in my larger or heavily planted tanks, I usually put a powerhead that comes on at night. It's set on a reverse timer to the CO2 system, pointed up at the surface. Works.

I do the same, but with an airpump coming on at night on a timer. Also heavily planted and not a lot of flow and the fish showed some signs of oxygen deprivation at night especially in warmer temps. Might be pretty easy to run an airpomp on a timer on the largest planted tanks in the studio when you are away MD, just as insurance for when a filter gets clogged.

I found over the years that a lot of shops believe that they do not have to deworm or quarantine fish when they get them from main suppliers because they believe that they do it.. And I found over the years that main suppliers do not deworm or use illness preparation because they believe that the shops use producrs to deworm them, quarantine them and use other products to treat any health issues.... I lost so many over the years that i quarantined.A biology friend professor friend looked into the ones who passed away in a short time period in quarantine and he did say that the stage of the disease the fishes had indicated 'months' of having been infected...

It's the right approach - learn from what happened and move on - you are clearly a owner who cares about their fish and it's not neglect or mistreatment. It is a lesson in not overplanting (because filters break and got wonky even without dead fish blocking them). One other thought is maybe when travelling for a good length of time doing a good trim back on all the tanks - need it or not - so no over oxygenation and, more important, Kate can clearly see and describe potential issues throughout the tank when you check-in (like fish clogging intake). Cheers! Good Luck On New Build/Variation.

My filter failed and at night the oxygen got too low and I lost a tetra and everyone else was up top trying to get air. I've since added an airstone that's on a timer to run at night just in case. If you want a backup for any future oxygen failures this could help you.

So sorry for your loss :( It's always hard to see fishes we care so much for pass away. I lost my beloved plakat betta a few weeks ago. He was my favourite fish and I understand how you feel as I feel the same. Mine got constipated out of the blue, even though he eats high quality pellets and frozen foods. I put him in a hospital tank and got him frozen daphnia. He hate a bit of it, then I fasted him for a few days. Unfortunately on day 4 he started to pinecone and become lethargic. He passed away the next day. I think I know why since I keep finding baby bladder snails. I knew I had some as I would pick the adults and eggs whenever I found them, but I never found babies. With the betta gone, after a week the tank had lots of babies. Which makes me think he was eating them and had some kind of blockage. I got a few assassins snails (15 gallons) to help me keep on top of things. His harlequin rasboras buddies were fine and still are. They are the oldest fishes that I have. I since got another betta (half-moon) and as beautiful as he is, it's not the same. My plakat was super active, swimming all day in his tank and was very inquisitive. The new guy is very shy and laid back, he enjoys lunging in the plants all day. I'm sure that in time, he will learn to recognize and trust me. I wish I had been able to save m plakat :( To brighten things a little big, my otocinclus had babies in two different tanks. That's quite the achievement!

My air pump had shorted out in the mudskipper tank but I have no idea what happened with the fairy. The rest of the colony is just fine, parameters on point. MD your emersed plants were blocking majority of the light to your submersed plants. The oxygen being produced was just diffusing straight into the air. The fish, plants, inverts and bacteria are constantly respiring, using up more oxygen in the water. If the rate of photosynthesis was less than the rate of oxygen consumption for too long, plus no surface agitation to increase gas exchange they sadly would definitely have suffocated.

Recently I lost all six of the Congo tetras I had in my 30 gallon tank and was devastated. The day prior I had done a water change and I'm pretty sure the problem was just something with the filter, though I couldn't be entirely sure. I was absolutely devastated, I love them like my other pets, and felt so guilty. Truly it unfortuntely sometimes happens and there's no use beating ourselves up for it considering there's nothing that can be done after the fact rather than learn and do better in the future. Now have a thriving 75 gallon community tank without any (knock on wood) losses over the past couple of months since it started. I'm sorry for your loss, please don't let it destroy you and know you're not alone!

Boesemani rainbows are my favourite darlings as well, I'm gutted for your loss. I lost a couple earlier as well. I suggest you to get some friends for that lone Boesemani rainbow. He needs atleast 2-3 more to feel happy again.. Maybe rescape a bigger tank for them later on...

That's heavy. I'm very sorry. Just today I've lost 5 harlequin rasboras (the entire school) and 4 neon tetras in two separate starter tanks very suddenly. I have no clue why. Everything thrived for a few solid days and the test numbers were OK even as the fish were dying off. One theory is "PetSmart" syndrome. No mum and pop stores in my area.

I love Matt MD: do you think I need another fish tank? guy who sells the fish tanks: no... buuuuuut... btw MD, if you're looking for more tank ideas have you ever seen any of the non-splendens species of Bettas? they havent been bred to be "Fighting Fish" so they still have the personalities of a small Indonesian Gourami. Dan's Fish posted an Oddballs tour the other day that had a tank of Betta Simorum and they are gorgeous!
