@@mikemurphy7711 You can autorotate almost everything but the smallest helis, he made a mistake by pulling up and keeping positive pitch for a fraction of a second (to try to turn away to avoid people?), don't know how this one was set up or how heavy it was but I have seen some pretty big rc helis autorotate perfectly time after time. Also from that height it's more like using rotor inertia than autorotating. I almost always switch of my motor before landing and you would be surprised how far a heli can glide before touching the grass and sliding it out.

I crashed my RC helicopters a few times, its amazing how much damage can be done even in a small crash. Everything bends and twists. I gave up on helis in the end and went down the sport drone route in the end. Then back to fixed wing. Its not a cheap sport!
Traurig, einfach nur traurig, dass diese tolle Maschine abgestürzt ist. Ich hoffe Pilot Thomas findet den Elan, seine Super-Puma wieder in die Luft zu bringen. Viel Erfolg!
Man that was such a beautiful machine.
I love the Swiss Super Puma, i worked on the Swiss main heli base for a while. Awesome machines. This RC pilot is clearly very skilled, and propably also trained for such scenarios as he should befor using this machines. A Autorotation landing should be in every helicopter pilots skillbook. If he had more airspeed at the point of the failure or more hight he could have landed it with no damage if lucky.
Hope he can repair it. I know its was a tough hit but at least most of it's intact.

How sad - this was the machine of Thomas Baumann. Looks like the ESC switched off (may be overheated or Lipo battery voltage dropped quickly and made the ESC switch off?). Strange as the switch off was not in an extremely power-demanding situation, hope it was not due to a "power off" function accidentally activated in the Jeti Transmitter when a battery alarm occurs. Have a 2.5 Meter Heli Baumann Puma myself and the crash is indeed heartbreaking! 😢Fortunately Heli Baumann has a professional team so I am sure they will re-bulid an even nicer one soon! 😊

☠BLACK BARON☠ The outer temperatures seemed to be moderate if folks were wearing winter like jackets. I would exclude temperatures around or slightly under +50°C. One not well balanced cell can already cause lots of trouble. Software issue? But, definitely, it's the ESC switching off ... soft cutoff. Thomas, rebuild it and make an even better one. That's the challenge. Better use over-powered ESCs than under-powered ESCs. Use slightly over-powered cool running motors. Not more (A)mps, less (A)mps is the challenge.

I'm not an RC helo guy, so excuse my ignorance. Question(s) - Do RC helos have the ability to auto rotate to any degree? And, would the auto rotate to the ground have been more successful if he had not been in a banked turn? Thanks...
@ConnorCain25
Жыл бұрын
Yes mate, they have the ability to auto rotate, what should of happened is the Heli should have been corrected to level flight and then he could have autorotated. The banked turn would have killed his head speed making it impossible to recover. This is easier said than done as most RC pilots panic and forget how to auto rotate hence why it needs to be practiced heavily until its second nature. He was also very low to the ground so he may not have even had enough height to auto rotate

I would sasy he had more luck than skills. The motor was off, he pulls the nose up, trys to perform a turn to come back. Better: Nose down, pitch to a fast but moderate sinking, gaining speed, make a flare to gain rpms and touch down more smothe than this. I had a similar problem with my airwolf once! I had only some cracks in the painting, because I landed without gears out. For a 600 size helicopter, 4,8 kg is not verry light and a rotor-speed of 1200 rpm is not much, so I had no reserves and it works. A well trained pilot knows everytime how to performe an autorotation! This wasn't one
Love it!
Interesting to see the RC version of an auto-rotation controlled landing
Thats a shame. The second the engine quit he should have straightened out and setup his auto rotation. Pulling into that climbing turn guaranteed a crash.
Almost a decent autorotation landing. Homie must've been too shocked to react properly. Hope it gets rebuilt stronger
Ouch!
Sad but amazing !
As early in your flying as possible, it's important to learn how to auto rotate.
Sorry it was going so well very impressive.
So sad. But it could be worse. It could be mine. 😁 I don't have one
The heli pilots at our flight field in west Phoenix learned early on not to try auto rotation.
Our 30 secs before the motor failed the model looked like it was twitching or jerking around in the air? Maybe it was gusting or turbulence but it was flying on rails upto that point? Would love to know what the pilots assessment was before it crashed. Either way it's always gutting to see hard work getting smashed up.
Always enjoy watching others hopes a dreams come crashing down other than my own hopes and dreams.
Nice blend of Kevlar and carbon fiber. Not many piece's leftover.
Got caught in " dead mans curve ' not enought forward speed to iniciate outo rotation
Well at least the rotor didn’t smash into the ground. That’s a plus
I witnessed this crash live at ProWing. The whole flight felt sketchy and underpowered but after that motor quit the pilot did everything to make sure he crashed as hard as possible.

How much was that rc helicopter worth?
Bad luck on the timing of the fail given the move he was pulling. Still managed to land it wheels down so props on that.
Almost a perfect time to auto rotate, although I don’t think you had the altitude, and the forward momentum to really accomplish it, and your reaction has to be immediate once you recognize the situation, in order to keep those blades spinning at a rate that would allow you to flare and soften that landing.
@BAEPilot
Жыл бұрын
He pitched up and banked, causing the blades to stall! He should have "immediately" gone into 30% negative pitch. Continue forward momentum, maintaining head speed during decent and then positive pitch for a near soft landing. Height was not an issue. Bigger the heli the easier to Auto land. Unnecessary carnage.
I hope the pilot survived and gets the autorotation training he desperately needs.
