    @@mikemurphy7711 You can autorotate almost everything but the smallest helis, he made a mistake by pulling up and keeping positive pitch for a fraction of a second (to try to turn away to avoid people?), don't know how this one was set up or how heavy it was but I have seen some pretty big rc helis autorotate perfectly time after time. Also from that height it's more like using rotor inertia than autorotating. I almost always switch of my motor before landing and you would be surprised how far a heli can glide before touching the grass and sliding it out.

    How sad - this was the machine of Thomas Baumann. Looks like the ESC switched off (may be overheated or Lipo battery voltage dropped quickly and made the ESC switch off?). Strange as the switch off was not in an extremely power-demanding situation, hope it was not due to a "power off" function accidentally activated in the Jeti Transmitter when a battery alarm occurs. Have a 2.5 Meter Heli Baumann Puma myself and the crash is indeed heartbreaking! 😢Fortunately Heli Baumann has a professional team so I am sure they will re-bulid an even nicer one soon! 😊

    ☠BLACK BARON☠ The outer temperatures seemed to be moderate if folks were wearing winter like jackets. I would exclude temperatures around or slightly under +50°C. One not well balanced cell can already cause lots of trouble. Software issue? But, definitely, it's the ESC switching off ... soft cutoff. Thomas, rebuild it and make an even better one. That's the challenge. Better use over-powered ESCs than under-powered ESCs. Use slightly over-powered cool running motors. Not more (A)mps, less (A)mps is the challenge.

    I'm not an RC helo guy, so excuse my ignorance. Question(s) - Do RC helos have the ability to auto rotate to any degree? And, would the auto rotate to the ground have been more successful if he had not been in a banked turn? Thanks...

  • @ConnorCain25

    @ConnorCain25

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes mate, they have the ability to auto rotate, what should of happened is the Heli should have been corrected to level flight and then he could have autorotated. The banked turn would have killed his head speed making it impossible to recover. This is easier said than done as most RC pilots panic and forget how to auto rotate hence why it needs to be practiced heavily until its second nature. He was also very low to the ground so he may not have even had enough height to auto rotate

    I would sasy he had more luck than skills. The motor was off, he pulls the nose up, trys to perform a turn to come back. Better: Nose down, pitch to a fast but moderate sinking, gaining speed, make a flare to gain rpms and touch down more smothe than this. I had a similar problem with my airwolf once! I had only some cracks in the painting, because I landed without gears out. For a 600 size helicopter, 4,8 kg is not verry light and a rotor-speed of 1200 rpm is not much, so I had no reserves and it works. A well trained pilot knows everytime how to performe an autorotation! This wasn't one

    Almost a perfect time to auto rotate, although I don’t think you had the altitude, and the forward momentum to really accomplish it, and your reaction has to be immediate once you recognize the situation, in order to keep those blades spinning at a rate that would allow you to flare and soften that landing.

  • @BAEPilot

    He pitched up and banked, causing the blades to stall! He should have "immediately" gone into 30% negative pitch. Unnecessary carnage.

    The opposite unfortunately, the more height you have in that situation the more time you have to get the helicopter stable into an auto rotation and land safely

    I'm not much of helicopter guy, but was the bank at the end due to the torque differential because of the engine failure? Is autorotation a possibility with a model? Seems the rotors may not have sufficient mass to keep the RPM's up, but the principle is the same, right? Do you have manual collective control? Not that you had much time to react...

    Yes, they can auto-rotate. It all happened very quickly and relatively low. His first thought was to bank which didn't help. Should have continued the descent to pick up head speed. Easy to say after the fact.

    @Essential RC OK cool. Thanks for the response. I didn't mean to sound critical or anything. He had almost no time to react. Was just curious. I fly the airlines and RC fixed wing years ago, but know very little about helicopters. And less about helicopter models. It looks fascinating, but this model is on a different level.
