    I see that you turn against the movable jaw when using an adjustable wrench. It's working for you, however ideally you would turn against the fixed jaw as it's stronger. I enjoy your videos. Thanks for making them. Great advice on protecting the brass parts.

    Your use of the paper clip to hold the eccentric block in place during reassembly is brilliant. I will definitely use that technique next time I do a 220/228 rebuild. Thanks for sharing your tricks of the trade. Always look forward to your videos.

    Well I'll be darned! I've gone past this video a few times and decided to watch it. What a great video filled with tips and advice. One thing that stood out is when you talked about the controlled initial flare up having to do with heating the generator. Every time I saw the flare up I got scared and immediately turned the lantern off thinking it was going to explode! Now I know that it is supposed to be that way! Thank you for a great video that answered many of my questions. Now I can feel confident lighting my lanterns.

    We had a 220 when I was very young. I remember it distinctly and how my father would stand there yelling at it because he inevitably hit one of the mantles while lighting it and he would have to put on a new one. I remember how it would flare up and every now and then flames would lick up from the valve. This thing needed work. I recall one specific camping trip where we got to the site around 10 at night and it was raining. We used to use an old military surplus canvass tent and I sat in the car as I watched my father struggle in the rain to get the tent up. He needed light so he pulled out the lantern and stood there in the pouring rain trying to light it. I remember very clearly when he finally got it lit only to start swearing at the top of his lungs. One of the mantles must have broken in transit and once again the lantern was giving him fits. I can still see the bright streak of light arcing through the night sky as he grabbed the lantern by the bail, swung up around like it owed him money and he let it go to sail quietly into the ravine we were camping near. We slept in the car that night, put up the tent in the morning and then went into town and got a new 321. I do wonder though what real purpose a 2nd mantle provides. I have compared a 286 next to a 288 and a 335. The 335 is brighter than both others combined. And why, if 2 mantles are better, did Coleman never make a lantern that used two 999 mantles? Surely if it's only about brightness that would have been better.

    It's not about being brighter. The two-mantle lamps and lanterns are only about 250cp. The design originated with lamps for indoor use and having two light sources, even though they're only a very short distance apart, reduces shadows.

    Great story and brought back memories of my Dad as well. Always seemed to be pitching the tent at night and in the rain when car camping as a family with 4 kids and a dog. Being the oldest I got to help with the tent and learn new words in the process. Despite my Dad being a mechanical engineer (or maybe because he was one) he always opened up the lantern too soon causing a fireball despite instructions in the valve knob.

    I bought off of ebay and I watch your channel not just for understanding how the Lantern Operates, but for safety and lighting procedures. Unfortunately I'm still uncomfortable taking any Lantern apart but as always, I appreciate your help as well as your quick response. I promise that I am using all precautions and I'm always outside. I'll send u an update . If need be, I'll send to the Coleman company. Thanks for your time !!

    Good morning and happy new year. I have a 1949 double mantle coleman lantern. I done all my safety precautions and I'm confident it's in working order. I've tried at least four attempts to light without mantles and each time , both burners lite , unfortunately, only momentarily ( 5 to 10 seconds). I tried with mantles but had the same result. Pump seemed in good condition but the only other issue is that foe safety reasons, I only fill with fuel about 1 quarter of a tank .

  • @king.coleman

    @king.coleman

    Жыл бұрын

    A quarter tank is plenty. They're designed to run right to the bottom of the tank. If it's difficult to light, try rotating the tip cleaner as it warms up. If you've recently had the generator apart, it's possible you've got loose bits of carbon clogging the gas tip. If that doesn't solve the problem, you may have debris in the fount that's being carried through the fuel system and clogging things up.

    Thanks for the videos. I love watching all of them. I have an American 220F. Looking at the valve, the pump is on the right and the fill cap is on the left just like yours, but the decal is below the valve and not centered vertically, instead it is placed high. Also, the valve knob is black. I think it's original but I'm nowhere near as knowledgeable as you are. I bought it at a yard sale so I don't know its history, just that it was very well taken care of.

    The crusty stuff around the valve is probably thread sealant. I prefer thread tape but others like the liquid.

  • @king.coleman

    The factory always used a liquid, never tape. Toronto and Wichita seem to have used different products and whatever they used in Wichita makes for a much, much tighter valve.

    Thanks Bill. So great! If the pump cup nut is the four corner type and you have to pull it up and off versus unscrewing, will you be able to reuse it or is there a pretty good chance it will be damaged? I've never take this type off before.

  • @king.coleman

    @king.coleman

    5 ай бұрын

    If you mean the newer style with a clip rather than a nut, you can usually pry them off with a small flat-head screwdriver, working from one tab to another, and get them off without any permanent damage. You might have to flatten the tabs a bit afterward. Granted, I rarely work on those newer lanterns, but I've never had one of those clips I couldn't reuse.

    Hi there and thank you. I’m having an issue with the control valve, it’s frozen. I have a 228F. The pump and ball are not engaging either. Do I break the entire latern down to address these issues? Inherited from my Daddy he passed 2021.💜

    Backing off the packing not will often free up the valve stem, then you can retighten it. I'm not sure what you're describing with regard to the pump. Make sure the leather is oiled and that you open the check valve by turning the pump handle anti-clockwise before pumping. If the problem is the check valve: if stuck closed, sometimes you can poke the ball inside with a long skewer or piece of stiff wire...if stuck open, a soak in carburetor cleaner may free it up, otherwise you'll probably have to remove and/or replace the check valve. Unless the lantern has been badly abused, check valves are usually fixable. Make sure you've got a check valve removal tool before trying that.

    Thanks for the timely video. I have a 220H arriving on Monday that appears to be in very good condition, hopefully it will light up with just a good visual inspection, oil the leather pump cup and 2 new mantles. If not, I know now how to proceed.

    Hi Bill, thanks for your great videos! I just bought a canadian 236 from 1956 whith a lot of rust inside the faunt, i saw in one of your videos how you take care of that. Do you have any tips on that model and do you have a video coming on that one? Or is it the same as your 335 single mantle rebuild video? Greetings from the Netherlands

    I have no information with regard to import/export on 236s. The single-mantle models are all pretty similar, some just have smaller and some larger components. My video addressing fuel system problems was made using a 236 and may be of interest.

    Does the 220 F (us or canadian) have only steel fount regardless of the year?

  • @king.coleman

    @king.coleman

    Жыл бұрын

    No. Canadian 220 founts were brass through the "E" revision and switched to steel with the "F". American 220/228 founts were brass through the "D" revision, then switched to steel with the "E". The exception is the 220BX, made during the war, which had a steel fount. Wartime "B"s and early "C"s, I believe, may have steel founts as well.
