DISABLING ALL SAFETY SWITCHES on a John Deere L108

This video will show you how to disable all safety switches on a John Deere L108 (2005)
Do this at your own risk, seriously.
If you cannot remember how much you love your fingers and toes and do something stupid, OR if you let someone operate your lawn mower that has the safety switches removed and they lose a limb, you are responsible.
Own it, you have been warned.
If you believe and live as though you were not supposed to walk around wrapped in bubble wrap, remove these switches and enjoy mowing again.

Best Explanation of seat switch I have seen. I think there is a mechanical switch between two of the connectors in the plug that either have to be separated or like you did - cut it off!!

Without all of the safety switches, it is such a pleasure to drive the JD tractors.(E120 mine) You just need to use common sense to protect yourself. If you're getting off of the mower for any reason, shut off the blades first. Also, many of the problems with these mowers, are caused because one of the safety switches is bad.

I can't count the number of times I've leaned dangerously off the seat to try to move a branch on the ground while trying to keep my butt on the sensor, when it would be much safer to just jump off an pull the branch AWAY from the mower. The seat switch is a good idea on paper, but it honestly causes me to do even MORE dangerous stuff trying to work around it.

It depends on different situations, if one where to try and move something, it’s not such a good idea, but it somehow a faulty starter where to activate the lawnmower, it wouldn’t turn off and would cause the lawnmower to continue to run until it runs out of gas or a different situation. If stored indoors, it could cause a fire due to it being on and overheating. It all depends on certain situations, but it’s best to have them on.

@@gacha21x35 Your scenario needs a lot of unlikely things to go wrong at once. Yes we can all imagine very specific situations where it would be good to have X, but the idea of the switch isn’t to prevent your scenario, but to reduce harm at a statistical level. My question would be: How many people are injured by lawnmowers without a seat switch, and how bad are the injuries, and how many are injured by lawnmowers WITH a seat switch? In other words, is it better to prevent one major injury if it means causing 10,000 minor injuries? I’m skeptical about whether the seat switch actually helps keep people safer in a general, global sense.

So, I followed your instructions and connected the two purple wires. However, now the mower acts like I disconnected the battery. Any suggestions? Thanks,

I by-passed all of my safety switches - still no electrical power. I last used the mower during the fall of 2020, the year we had the big ice storm that lasted for so long. Could it be that an ice bridge formed somewhere between hot and ground and burned out a wire? I am not exactly a novice, but I am at my wits end with this mower..

The PTO switch is identical to the brake switch, on mechanical clutch mowers. It's designed to cut power to the engine when the seat switch is closed, so in theory, just taking the seat switch out should work, But, if the PTO is engaged, the white side of the switch could still ground out the ignition power... When disengaged, the start loop side of the PTO switch is closed so the solenoid gets power, but the ignition side is open. With all white wires and switches, you have to make sure they don't ground out, EXCEPT the ignition switch (so you can actually turn it off). To avoid the safety cutouts, the white wires could be cut. Confusing. BUT, if you don't want to mess with all 5 switches and jumpers and tape, you could just run the purple wire straight from the ignition switch to the start tab on the solenoid, unplug the PTO and BRAKE switch and that's it. The seat switch is in line after the brake switch, so once the brake switch unplugged, the seat switch doesn't matter. And, because the whole RIO system (pedal switch, relay, and dash switch) is downstream of the PTO switch, leaving the connector to the PTO unplugged, effectively disables the whole RIO system. Took me a while to find a good wiring diagram. Printed it, color coded the start, hot , and ground circuits so I could more easily see how all of the white wires and yellow wires worked. The brake and PTO switches are central to the whole system. And just a bit of additional info, the whole safety system of white wires is connected to the primary coils on the engine, so if ANY of them ground out, the engine has no spark. But you don't want to disconnect the white wire at the engine, unless you want to manually ground out the coils when you want it to shut off... I'm gonna test this sometime this week.

Yup. I was correct. In fact, I found an even easier way. Unplug both the PTO and the brake plugs, remove the solid purple wire from the PTO plug end and connect it to the solenoid. Done.

My L118 seat switch harness plug had a "H" shaped metal clip inside it that shorts the engine out if you unplug it from the seat. You can pull the metal tab straight out "harness end" & plug it back into the seat and the tractor will run if you get off it. Won't run unplugged. You absolutely must have good habits and never never get off the tractor with the mower still turning or you will lose a Foot! I mounted a 15 gal weed sprayer to the back of my mower and now I can get off and fill it or check the level or run the hose out and do spraying. plug

Have to get a new or used ignition switch. Sometimes you can shoot some Blaster in it and work the key back and forth and the relay will close again, sometimes that works. If you fell froggy and are able to take the switch out, and apart clean the contacts (remove all the dirt in it). Most times you have to replace it tho.

Be careful with the seat sensor. On mine, when I pulled the switch off for the seat, it kept running when I got off the seat. But when I go to turn on the mower blades, it instantly turned off. I just wouldn't recommend cutting the entire sensor off unless you're prepared to rewire it. Very helpful video though. Thanks for the video!

  • @Troy-Echo

    @Troy-Echo

    4 жыл бұрын

@SecularPenguinist My issue wasn't the mower turning off when I got off the seat when I removed the seat sensor, I could be sitting on the seat and as soon as I tried to engage the mower blades, the engine would turn off...so I couldn't mow at all without the sensor so I had to replace it. The reason I'd like to be able to keep the seat sensor disconnected is so I could lean over and pick up a stick or get off the seat and pick up something in the lawn without constantly having to restart the engine every time. I don't mind turning the mower off for things like this, but having the engine cut off every time I lean over or get off the mower is just a pain.
