How to Bypass Safety Switches on the Troy-Bilt Pony 42 Riding Lawn Mower

In this short video, I'll show you how to bypass two aggravating and unnecessary safety switches on the Troy-Bilt Pony 42 riding lawnmower--the seat safety switch and the backup mower safety switch. This way, I can get off the lawn mower while the mower blade is engaged. I can also backup while the mower blade is engaged. Why did disable them? for several reasons. First of all, I am capable of deciding for myself if I want to get off the lawn mower or backup while the blade is engaged. I don't like having a safety switch that makes the decision for me. Second, when going over bumps, I often bounce on the seat, which causes the safety switch to stall the engine. Third, I have to move things like water hoses, sticks, etc. I don't want to have to disengage the blade every time I need to jump off the mower for 2 seconds. Lastly, it's ludicrous that I have to go through an elaborate procedure on the starter switch just to backup while mowing without the engine shutting off. I have too backup too often to deal with that. Mower manufacturers: Let me cut my grass the way I want to!
DISCLAIMER: It may be dangerous to disable safety features on your lawnmower. I'm not recommending that you do. This is just what I have done. You can make your own decision.

The safety switches are there for a reason,it keeps people from getting hurt ,as far as having to reset the backward mowing,it only goes off if I don't mow backward after sometime, but as long as I keeping mowing both backward and forward it stays on,and anybody using a riding mower knows backward mowing is a must

I have this mowing showing up tomorrow and I appreciate these lil tricks that’ll make the job I have ahead of me that much easier. Better yet, this advice comes from my brethren in Christ and I’m even more appreciative of that so, thank you brother ! “For God, who said, “Light shall shine out of darkness,” is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen containers, so that the extraordinary greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves;” ‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭4‬:‭6‬-‭7‬ ‭

Thanks for this video. My Troy Bilt Tuffy/Pony is a bit different from yours in that it only has a 3-position ignition switch with NO way to allow mowing in reverse. To me, this is an ignorant feature, and I had to solve the problem before I started the mowing season. You helped, showing that it could be done, and on my mower it's easy and doesn't involve the ignition switch on the firewall.. Under the frame, where the Forward/N/Reverse lever pivots, there is a single little wire (Yellow/Black on mine). Simply disconnect the little wire's clip and the mowing in reverse problem is solved. There are also the switches under the seat to solve the "mower shuts off if you stand" problem, but I've left them connected until I decide if I want to solve that problem at a later time. Again, thanks for your video.

My dad did something similar to that when he owned an older Huskee lawnmower he bought from Tractor Supply back in 2002. It had a safety switch like that and he disabled it. Not safe, but more convenient for him and for me when I cut the grass. I would always turn off the PTO before getting off the lawnmower though.

Yeah. I've had this Troy-Bilt for 2 years now and I'm disappointed with the quality. I just had to replace the metal outer deck covers because the mounts of both of them broke and they fell off after just 2 years. Easy enough to fix and not too expensive, but they shouldn't be that fragile. Oh well. At least it's fixable.

Our neighbor got off his tractor and left the PTO to the mower running when the mower hung up on the side of a ditch. He cut his left off, managed to get on the tractor and made it home bleeding and died opening the back door. There are rare accidents but, yes, that's why they install the safety switches as annoying as they may be.BTW, I did disable the seat shutoff that is a pain in the butt.

That's a great price. Good for you! Overall, it's a good mower. It cuts well and I like the turn radius. With the safety features disarmed, it's more convenient. It doesn't feel as well built as my old John Deer did. Be careful about bumping the mower deck on curbs or stumps or such. I bent mine once with a minor bump and the blade started touching the deck. I was able to bend it back into place, but was surprised how delicate the deck is.

That's odd. Here's some question to troubleshoot. Are you sure it is in forward and not reverse? Are younseating firmly in the seat so as to tell the lawnmower you are in the seat and the safety switch doesn't shut off the mower. Also, you don't have the chicken engaged do you? If the throttle is all the up, it engages the choke (for starting in cold weather) and it may not want to run the blades with the cgike engaged. Those are the only easy things 8bcan think of besides something more serious that requires a service call. Anyone else have ideas?

I'm not sure exactly how the mechanism works, but yeah, it's really just a speed control.

Take your own advice just don't do this stuff you're suggesting. Leave your tractor running get off it walk back to it with you flip flops on damp grass and slip slide and run your foot into the blade opening and good bye foot.

If someone gets hurt and it's discovered that the safe mechanisms were disabled, you'll be liable. Insurance won't cover it; you'll have come out of your pocket. You shouldn't post a video showing how to bypass safety switches. But if you did you should have a disclaimer. Really not worth the risk, just take the video down. Lack of common sense on behalf of another party isn't a prudent legal defense for you. Removing safety switches is slam dunk negligence, it's a matter of how large of judgment will be made against you.

Common sense tells me that it is idiotic to get off a mower with the blades activated, especially wearing flip flops. It is reasonable to disable these switches because they are not reliable but your brain should not be deactivated while using the mower.

mowing in reverse?....good. Showing people how to get on and off the mower while the blade is spinning....you need to rethink that one.
