Despite his limited physical abilities, Zhang Xiaodong can take care of his father, who had a stroke several years ago. The 36-year-old was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis in 2008. Since then, he has only been able to move his arms and hands. He recently started sharing videos of their daily life on social media platforms to earn money for joint surgery which may help him walk again.

Can only move his arms and hands but he is still cooking everday for his father ?! He is cleaning every room, is going to grocery shopping, is doing chores as well and even helped his father with washing his face ? And he is still worried about him being a burden to his family ? This man is doing something that majority of people nowadays *wouldn't even do for themselves* like cleaning and cooking everyday, let alone taking care and respecting the older ones. This man is truly a role model !

As a med student, I just learned about ankylosing spondylitis. The interesting thing is that as I'm learning about these diseases, I never fully appreciate the importance of the information since there's so much to learn in a very short time. Videos like this help put things into perspective and humble me. I never knew the condition could be so debilitating. All I knew was that it can be caused by some sort of breakdown in the gut microbiome layer, that then causes IL-17 and and other cytokines to inflame the spine, resulting in a "bamboo" like spine, and leading to back pain, pain at tendon insertion sites, etc. No where did I take time to actually step back and think about patients with this condition until now- just the text book definitions of how this condition may present. Thank you for your video and for inspiring me to step beyond the books more. Your incredible strength and mental determination also inspires me beyond medicine and for this I'm grateful.

You're absolutely right. I'm an optometrist and we learnt about ankylosing spondylitis and the other HLAB27+ diseases which because they're heavily associated with anterior uveitis. So we always have to rule out those diseases when a patient has uveitis. But I had no idea it can be so debilitating to the point of being wheelchair bound.

What breaks my heart is that the man is the epitome of filial piety. At first, I was annoyed wondering why the relatives were in an economic bind and was too stressed out to help. But then when it was explained said relatives were his elderly aunt and uncle who were childless, I immediately took my assumptions back (I thought there might be cousins dodging responsibility). I do hope he gets the surgery to fix his medical condition but I'm still sad with an able body, he would look after 3 people instead of one. It makes perfect sense for him to look after his aunt and uncle, but he has to make sure he gives himself enough post operative recovery period or else he can stress his body and cause further medical downtime. 😓
