I noticed that in a lot of critiques of the movie, the reviewer claims that Ben Platt stays hunched over in an attempt to “seem younger”. As someone with social anxiety and is pending an autism evaluation, whose body language has always been similar, I’m glad to finally see another interpretation.

So happy someone is treating this musical with respect in 2024. Really interested in the perspective of Evan being autistic.

Wait, at 2:17 did you just say “this was right after it became possible to get both an autism and adhd diagnosis?” I’m confused by this wording. Autism had been a diagnosable thing since the early 1910s, so you must mean people couldn’t be diagnosed with both at the same time until recently. Do you have a source for that?

It wasn't possible to get diagnosed with both concurrent conditions until the DSM 5 in 2013 and is seen as one of the many reasons for increased late diagnosis of autism lately - before then it was common practice for doctors to see both ADHD and ASD, but choose to diagnose ADHD + Sensory Processing Disorder (because those could/can co-occur) as the diagnosis because it had less stigma and the accommodations are effectively the same and they look similar from the outside, they just have different internal reasonings for each thing. I think I've discussed this before in my ASD v. ADHD video somewhere? And I talk about the history of diagnosis a bit in my "revisiting female vs. male autism" video. But otherwise, sourcing from the DSM and in-community conversations over years!
