He was a prophet, a compulsive liar, and god's best friend. It's Joseph Smith.

It would have been very funny if you had stuck to the plan of making him sound like Jesus, but I liked learning about the year with no summer stuff. Sounds like something God would do.

As an exmo living in Utah where nearly every city is named after a BoM character, this is so extra funny.
a small correction: Martin Harris didn't lose the first 100 or so pages of the Book of Mormon, his wife Lucy stole them and hid them. She basically said, "if you're really translating this stuff from an ancient book, you'll have no problem recreating these 100 pages."

There's actually no proof for this, as far as I'm aware. It's a legitimate theory, but all we know for certain is what was said in the video- Harris took the pages to show his family and one way or another, he lost them
Just a quick quibble -- it's "more OWN eye" (which doesn't lend itself as well to the "moron" jokes, but that's how they say it!) Otherwise, still really loving this one as a long-since-former Mormon who left because pretending not to be queer wasn't a viable long-term plan. 😁🌈

Turn it off. Like a light switch.
Something that absolutely needs to be said about Mormonism is that suicide is consider one of the greatest sins, I was taught that if you commit suicide you go straight to Super Hell (outer darkness) no saving throw. Which, as an ex-Mormon who's been suicidal my entire life, is a very fun bit of religious trauma for me to grapple with every time I ideate :)
@Mort-ko7lj
Ай бұрын
Not Mormon specific unfortunately. Pretty sure it's in Catholicism as well that suicide sends you to hell. You couldn't be buried in a church graveyard if you committed suicide (although in the 1900's i know you could get around this by claiming the deceased was of unsound mind when they committed the act)
The way I gasped when Caelan said they hadn't seen The Mummy (1999). It's good they had drawn me in with that deliciously flawless Moira Rose impresión. Amazing episode, as always.

Been trying to reply to you vis a vis the Bering Land Bridge, but something in my reply was tripping up the Community Guidelines and when I edited my comment to add it to my original comment, it just deleted the whole comment thread. So I'll just post the article title here: "Late Upper Paleolithic occupation at Cooper’s Ferry, Idaho, USA, ~16,000 years ago" from Science. I'm not planning to argue this further, wrestling with unclear commenting rules for 2 days for a single comment is way too much time to spend on this, but I wanted to provide some evidence of my claims before I dipped.
His repeated bashing of his head against rocks explains a lot.
That was a lot of fun. I can't wait for the inevitable part 2 when you all roast Brigham Young.

Omg YESSS
Couple fun facts: So the Celestial kingdom is actually further split into 3 levels, and only people married in the temple get to become gods. Also its only the men. The wives are just their husbands servants, not gods in their own right. I believe the other two levels are just. Men and women devided? But i honestly dont remember for sure about that. Second, Outer Darkness is only accessible to those who deny god to his face. So you have to literally see god and then betray him or deny he is god or something like that. So theres only a few souls there supposedly.
@mercury4885

the kingdoms of heaven are compared to the sun, the earth, and the moon & stars- Celestial is the brightest/best and where God lives with the people who got married in the temple, Terrestrial is chill and not really so bad (iirc it's supposed to literally be earth as paradise after the second coming), and Telestial is like. i guess you did your best lol.

Quorum of the Twelve also appears in both iterations of Battlestar Galactica. (Which was basically a bit like Mormons in Spaaaaaace.)

another fun facet of the whole preaching after death thing is that you can get into the celestial kingdom after you die! but your marriage has to be sealed post-death by proxy in the temple. and if you had kids out of a temple marriage, they've gotta be sealed to you too, because your family didn't come from a temple marriage so it isn't real. so mormons don't just do baptisms for the dead, they also do proxy marriages, adoption, and even the endowments that give you the funny underwear & secret rituals!

Not y'all pronouncing Moroni wrong 😭
fuck yes we're back (missed u guys)! Ok, gonna listen now
I was listening to this in another room, and got an ad for a video game. But didn't immediately realize it was an ad.
29.46 reminds me of the time I was admitted to hospital from the emergency room and asked the nurse for a pad cause I was on my period. She *would not* take the word "pad" into her mouth. It was all "I'm gonna look for what you asked for" and "after you get settled I'm gonna get you what you asked for" and "I am gonna bring you what you asked for before putting in the IV". This all in the strongest Berlin accent, which is the German version of saying "Hey I'm walkin' over heeere". Like, girl, what are you being so formal for, I know you're gonna go eat Currywurst for breakfast after this?
Ex Mo here, loving this podcast episode! I grew up gay and biracial in an all white church, I live to listen to the church and it's founders be dragged!
I am in the process of writing a book (sadly, not given to me by Moroni to transcribe and translate). The phrase “god plates” made something click in my head, so I think I’m gonna have offerings made on special plates made for that purpose. Thanks for the inspiration!

PRAISE BE!!!! Another RTD episode!!!
Exmo here: it's so fascinating to hear people react to what we grew up being taught. Like it really does sound like a video game, and I honestly never thought of it that way XD Ps, it's like nails on a chalkboard for me hearing Moroni pronounced wrong (the indocrination goes DEEP y'all). But the petty part of me is glad he got unintentionally dunked on like that. I mean, if Joe didn't want us to pronounce it "moron-i" he should have spelled it differently. You'd think god's bff would know better
Great timing! Just yesterday I was randomly thinking about this podcast and wondering when a new episode would drop💗

This was awesome. I actually recently watched a video about the LDS church by knowing better and like that plus this explains so much. I grew up with Mormon friends, my friends dad was a bishop in the church even... like it's crazy. So learning about this stuff has been fascinating. Great choice of topic can't wait for the next one ❤
The fear of swaying of elections by a new religious group reminds me of "Wild, Wild Country". Has anyone else in this comment section seen this docuseries? It's on Netflix & was popular enough to be parodied on "SNL".
Ok wow, I knew he was dead, but not *that* dead

Awesome video, I do just want to say that Emma *was* educated. Pretty well, actually. If I'm remembering correctly, she was more educated than Joseph (which wasn't hard but the point still stands lol)

7:57 I think the pengwing man looks like a cat.
So true story here. I was raised Mormon, and when I first heard of Moroni visiting Joseph with an open robe, my internal mental image was of joseph kneeling before him, and playing with Moroni's "melchezi-dick" priesthood. The mental image wandered in and out of my head all throughout my teens and 20's. ..... I really should have figured out that I'm bi/pan sooner.....
