Disa Towers
Disa Park is one of the best-known pieces of architecture in the Vredehoek area of Cape Town, South Africa. The towers were built in response to a "white housing crisis" in the city and completed in 1969. The buildings were designed by architectural firm Bergamasco, Duncan & James, which also designed most of the contemporary Catholic churches in Cape Town.
Built by the construction company Murray & Roberts in the 1960s, these three 17 story, cylindrical towers, called Blinkwater, Platteklip and Silverstroom, are nestled on the slopes of Table Mountain, and are almost universally proclaimed to be a blemish on the face of the majestic mountain. The three towers are popularly known to Capetonians as "The Pepper Pots", "Toilet Rolls" and "Tampon Towers". It has 287 apartment units providing enough housing for roughly 1,000 residents.
Murray & Roberts found a loop hole in the building restrictions on the mountainside, and built the base below the allowable development line, then built upward, above the line. The residents tend to disagree with the demolitionists; their homes have access to dozens of trails and hikes on their doorstep as well as a tennis court, squash courts, braai area and a swimming pool. The towers also provide an excellent vantage point for scenic views over the region, but dominate views of Table Mountain from below.
The design was more aligned to a US-design movement focused on affordable social housing. The first similar building was built in Chicago, known as the 'Corn Cobs' today.
Originally seventeen buildings were planned for Disa Park but only three were ever built. There was a white housing crisis in Cape Town in the 1970s into the 70s for which all of the town planning regulations in Cape Town were temporarily suspended in the 70s, so that any developer who was prepared to build apartment housing in the white group area, could build whatever the hell he wanted.
The oddly tall building scattered around the historically white suburbs were built in that period when regulations were suspended. The National Party government was very involved in interfering in Cape Town at the time...in the 1960s. Then finance minister Nico Diederichs's son was a junior partner in the company that developed Disa Park. When people ask how was such tall towers built at the foot of Table Mountain, it helps when your father is the minister of finance and about to be the president of the country.
In their day, the structures were highly experimental and lead the way for their industry in design and lessons learned from construction. Their circular design is capable of reducing noise pollution and the structures feature unique vinyl-like flooring which further reduces unwanted sound.
Now the towers experience some of the best views of neighbouring suburbs and the mountains in the Mother City. Residents living in the towers are spoiled for choice when it comes to trails nearby and they also have a variety of recreational activities nearby including tennis and squash courts.
