This is the most detailed description of owning a composting toilet on KZread. Totally honest and very thorough. Anyone considering buying one of these should watch this video. I have a box with a bucket toilet in my van. It must be emptied often, but dumping it is quick. There's very little cleaning and no maintenance.

Actually they do have to be a bit restricted in their speach because of the rules of KZread, I believe. There are certain nono words and topics that will makes them lose ad revenue if they violate, and they could potentially have the channel shut down if they have too many strikes. Peace❤

I wish you had discussed menstruation issues. Whether you use pads, tampons, or a menstrual cup, things get messy; esp if you have heavy periods. Do you empty the cup with the pee or poo? Or neither (separate compartment)? What about all the bloody wipes? Spray water bottle to rinse off with? This is reality and needs to be talked about. Even you male campers have female guests occasionally, so the topic WILL come up. Don't be squeamish, it's just another bodily function.

Some people might not like to use bleach though, it's just a little and I'm fine with it...I haven't found anything else yet that works that's not chemical. Thanks for posting this. This is insanely helpful with understanding the engineering. My only problem with all off the shelf designs I've seen so far, is that I've lived overseas for many years. Paper doesn't do it for me. I have to have a handheld bidet spray gun to clean up after, and that means completely waterless is not an option, unless I separate the process and do a shower rinse. I really think I want to design my own, with externally accessible tanks (like on many private jets) but there are many features of this one that are worth incorporating.

I have this toilet, and this is a great video! I had the same issue with the pucks, but I just press them into the grey cage, and they have enough give that they will stay in place, and not fall apart. I wish there weren't as many nooks and crannies to clean, and I might consider getting a steam cleaner to help with that. Also, I wish the lid had a soft close feature! You'd think for such an expensive toilet they could have made the hinges soft close somehow....

You didn’t discuss how to manage toilet paper. We’re sailors and have been using a airhead for a while. I agree with most of your comments, but….we only have to empty our poop bin once a month. Airhead offers two bins where you can let your poop compost while you use the other bowl. Finally our vent which sits on the transom of our yacht attracts flies, which we’ve found the biggest downside

poop takes about a year or so to fully compost (to be safe for further use), so the composting toilet “output” should go to a compost for additional 11 and a half months. These Separett type toilets are doing about the same thing the “composting” toilets do. If you buy the compostable bags from Separett of other manufacturer, then you can put the whole bag into the compost. Well, in RV case you probably don’t as you are moving around ...

We have one on a boat, the urine I pump overboard with a windscreen washer pump, and the solids and paper are basically a poo-in-a-bag set-up with the bag disposed responsibly. No composting occurs. Wet wipes are a good solution for cleaning after use, if required but the spray is something that we also use, after every use, a slightly acidic solution just to neutralise the urine residue. We have the fan set on a PIR triggered timer, that leaves the fan running for some 20 minutes after the person has left the bathroom which seems to work well and dries most of the moisture in the solids bag. Moisture is what causes smell. We have a decent charcoal filter on the vent outlet, haven't had any issues. Highly recommended. This unit replaced a Thetford cassette toilet which was also great to use but so ugly to empty.... public disposal points.... ewwww.... yellow rubber gauntlets and unwelcome splash-back are now all things of the past.

It's far easier to find a place to dump your pee bottle every two day than it was to find a place to dump the cassette every three days. In Europe there are stations to dump cassette toilets everywhere. i (Ben) say the Separett Tiny wins in my book.

Thank You for this rather Real look at an option for the normal RV holding tank type toilet . Can you also give us a look at the available options for a traditional holding tank toilet system. Does Europe have DUMP STATIONS similar to what is available in North America , and are they readily available in most towns , or do you really have to of out of the way to find THE ONE and only in a town , country , or region. Do most official campgrounds feature sites with sewer connections are they the few exceptions . What might be the average cost associated for dumping your black and grey tanks . THANKS CHEERS AND SFE TRAVELS Steve h.

You’re very welcome. You will be extremely inconvenienced with a tradition black tank in Europe, not saying it’s impossible, but it would not be fun. On the other hand there are actual cassette toilet dump stations everywhere.

Hello. Yes we still like the Tiny. That being said all toilets have compromises but we like it better than the cassette toilet. I also have to add we view things as world travelers, outside of North America there’s no dump stations. The urine bypass was not available when we bought ours and I also don’t want our gray water smelling even worse. Here in Europe people would notice if our gray water smelt like piss as you drive over concrete pads with drains to dump. In the wild I also don’t object to dumping gray water on the ground and yes I dump pee in the bushes I’d rather not have pee smell under my truck. The vent shit smell is bad enough. Hope this helps.

So am I understanding correctly, that there is not anything added to the poo bag? It seems to me that the odor that is forced out by the exhaust would be less offensive if some pine pellets were added, even once a day. Just a thought. I suppose that would be a personal choice thing.

Hello Tina, At this time we are not adding anything to the poo bag. We are tempted to try some type of powder or wood shavings to reduce the exterior smell. When we have company or want to sit outside we just empty the poo bag.

I put tampons on the solids side and I’d do the same with blood, bc then you have the exhaust fan so odor isn’t an issue. If you are rinsing it down the liquid side, I think it would fill up the liquid reservoir pretty quickly, but you could try both and see which works best for you. I think either is a viable option.

When I view these videos of complicated toilet situations, I always have the same question. Why not just do the Humanure system? It is dead simple, clean, no separation and no odor. I don't get it. Can you tell me your rationale behind not doing the Humanure system?

  • @pa_maj.MARTINI-van-MAN

    @pa_maj.MARTINI-van-MAN

In a van/camper, one cannot store the waste long enough for composting to take place, plus it would still need a place to eventually be put which while travelling would be very difficult. This is what I've come to understand through others that have answered this question. If in a static home with a large garden, yes feasible.

  • @theshermano3000

@@pa_maj.MARTINI-van-MAN The Humanure system CAN integrate with a composting situation. However, it doesn't have to. You can just put a plastic liner in a 5 gallon bucket and do your business until it gets to the point where it needs to be tossed. Then just tie up the bag (use compostable bags so it's not so hard on the environment) and just put it in any public garbage can. Easy peasy. The only drawback is you have to always have peat moss or wood shavings (sawdust) for the cover material. Otherwise, it will not work because the smell will be present if you don't cover it with that. We used that system to great effect for a long time in our off grid situation.

@@theshermano3000 Thanks. Yes, I understand that but I was really referring to the use of a 'proper' composting toilet in a van, it takes close to a year to make compost apparently and it still needs to be put somewhere eventually. I personally would use a Good liner in a bucket with a toilet seat (or something similar) and throw some horse pellets in to help dry things out and for smell. I pee in a 5 litre bottle with a squirt of bleach to stop that ammonia smell, recently I was informed that vinegar and a few drops of orange oil works great so I'll be trying that. Thanks again.

Trust me I’ve tried but I end up bending my knees to reduce splashes. Depending on where we are and what resources we have available I’ve taken to using a pee bottle so once my wife is filling up the urine container. It’s easier to discreetly empty a pee bottle than the urine container.

You may use your pee after diluted to watering tree and plants (you waste water - two times flushing and rinsing liquid container- itisn't eko). If that part of life it is that gross for you, stay in hotel and stop travel life. Have nice journey
