My dad worked in a major crime unit as an investigator in New Jersey back in that time frame. He saw how with even the tightest and best evidence high level perps "walk" thru some loophole in the legal system. Although he didn't actually operate like the Callahan character, he understood what the character/Eastwood as an actor was portraying. The frustration, stress of dealing with and staying within the law as it was and still bringing criminals to justice. On a sidenote, my father could shoot just as well in real life as was portrayed by Eastwood.@@kahnadah

I preferred Magnum Force to this one; without saying, of course, that the original set the standard for the sequels. There was no Godfather II to consider as the best film in the series, in my opinion.
I would say u are making a mistake, Eastwood made great reactionary movies, where the poor and disadvantaged are portrayed as the enemy, while the movie is devoid of meaningful content, he supported a very narrow view of what is right and wrong, based on the interests of the rich. He has never been able to play anyone other than himself.

Judge Dredd was initially based on Dirty Harry, but evolved into a sci fi feature. Karl Urban who knew this did his homework and mumbles "Marvelous" in one of the scenes in the Dredd 3D movie, just like Clint does here. And that's what makes Karl Urban the sole actor that could ever do a Dirty Harry reboot if one's ever done. He's got the same badass thing about him.

@@carljohansvamp I only wished I had kept those first issues. I also remember a story (not Dredd) about a powerful authoritarian nation based in Northern Africa (I think) that grew to be very violent and expansionist called Volga or something that was invading Europe as the backstory (minds a bit fuzzy on that one) and another story where the Roman Empire never collapsed but over the years has continued its expansion and developed tech to the stage it had time travel through portals and could leap through and conquer other times. I remember watching Dirty Harry and thought it was a bit comedic with the gritted teeth and the dialogue but it was entertaining. It wasn't until many decades later that I realised that many Americans took it very seriously. Not being American it never occurred to me that it wasn't an ironic comedy like early James Bond movies from the same period but it seems many Americans who grew up in this era thought this is how you should act being a cop.

well consider the similarly timed Death Wish , no humour at all . Both movies are critical of the criminal justice system but handle it different . Dirty Harry the Cop has cynicism but dry humour to get him by within the law . Paul Kersey , A civilian business man with revenge on his mind on the other hand goes full vigilante to seek justice . You see how humour can be used to balance a man .

These criminals didn't even wear masks to conceal their identities ; however, the criminal climbing the stairs wasn't a danger to anyone at that particular stage so basically dirty Harry committed a act of homicide on the criminal ; however, legally he would likely go unpunished

As for the all units available for that police job - don't think that's actually accurate as it's usually only when there's an officer down or in distress which might have happened who knows as officers could have requested assistance through their 2 way radios

Dredd was a sleeper movie for me and Karl carried it off perfect. I’m old enough that I bought the first Judge Dredd comic in Britain in the mid 70’s when a child (it was part of a bigger comic called 2000AD). He was good.

@@xr6lad 2000AD produced a lot of cool comics. I'm a tad younger and resident in sweden, but I read all of those I could put my hands on back then. Stallones Dredd wasn't really good, but I was ecstatic to see a ABC warrior looking a bit like Hammerstein in that movie. That was pure joy.

All fun at the time. I live in Australia now so moving lost many of those old comics.

@mrhob6355

well consider the similarly timed Death Wish , no humour at all .
