A veteran passing the torch to a rookie (this was Dirk's 21st and final season). No NBA player had ever before played 21 seasons with a team. The previous record was Kobe Bryant at 20 seasons. (Both are one-team careers.) No NBA player had ever played that many games with one team (Nowitzki finished at 1522). The previous record was 1504 (John Stockon). (Both are one-team careers.) As for seasons overall and games overall, only 3 others (Robert Parrish, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Vince Carter) have played more NBA games, and only 4 others (Parrish, Carter--played 22 seasons, Kevin Garnett, and Kevin Willis) have played 21 seasons or more in the league

I flew twice from Germany to Dallas on my own just to see him. It was worth every dollar and every hour of flight time. He is a legend to me because he's one of a kind. I don't know any other athlete who is so successful and at the same time so down-to-earth like Dirk. A role model on every imaginable level. Take care, Dirty and thank you for 21 years! 👍👍

Mavs got lots of faces that shaped the franchise, and Dirk certainly stood out among the rest. He could have left and joined other teams for multiple rings, but he stayed for 21 years in the franchise that drafted him. Man, humble.

I was too late to witness other earlier runs, but the 2011 Dallas run was the best I've seen in my life. Imagine beating the Roy-Dame-LMarcus Blazers, Two-peat LA, Durant-WB-Harden Thunders, then capping it off with beating the Heatles. Really special. That run cemented him as a GOAT. One of the best PFs!

His performance v Miami is still the most impressive and surprising single series performance I have ever seen and I have watched since 1970. Lead by example and him walking off with 7 seconds left in game 6 brings me to tears. An absolute legend.

You took us on an incredible ride 41. From all the nail biters in San Antonio and Sacramento, to the heartbreak against Miami in '06. Then you led us to our first ever title in '11.. YOU made the Mavericks an incredible franchise, and it's been an pleasure to watch you for 21 years. I saw your first game, and I saw your last. God bless you Dirk, you're one of the greatest of all time. Enjoy your retirement, you most certainly deserve it.

I grew up in the 80s and have seen some incredible players over my life: Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, Hakeem Olajuwon, John Stockton, etc. Dirk is up there as well. I've got this saved on my desktop for inspiration as well as John Stockton's final game at Arco Arena. I tear up every time.
