Dirk Hartog Island | The Most Comprehensive Guide You will Find | 4x4 Adventures Australia

Welcome to Jafffa Adventures where Jill and Terry take off for a half year trip through the remote regions of South Australia and Western Australia. The genesis of the trip was the solar eclipse at Exmouth on April 20th, but we decided to turn the adventure into half a year on the road visiting the most remote places we could get. In this video we visit Dirk Hartog Island, also know as DHI, and provide you with a comprehensive two-part series on all the highlights and remote places to visit on this overlanding mecca. We will show you how to get to all these great spots with detailed maps and explanations.
If West Australia 4WD and off road tracks are not on your bucket list, they should be!!
If you like overlanding, if you like remote unspoiled places, if you like 4WD action, then this is the place to be.

Another great instalment (shame that they have to collect the rubbish, there should be none! well, maybe some wash up from storms but I wouldn't have thought there would be much else (that's my pet Hate!! 🙄) I'll 2nd that with lockers, I'm still only running 1 in the rear & they don't make one for the front but with the pending front end rebuild, I may just upgrade the whole lot, different diff & with another locker of course. Thanks guys, gotta love Friday nights!!

It’s an amazing spot Tony, one of my favourite in Australia, but as you note, not cheap. I used our lockers constantly on the WA trip. Could I have done it without, most definitely but the mechanical sympathy lockers provided ensured I did not break any achy breaky-parts in the remoteness👍😎

Surf point on DH is like living on King Island everyday of the year. How windy is it you ask? Well, if it drops below 40 knots, all the cows fall over.

Hi Terry, ah you've found one of (if not the best) places in WA to visit. Looks much the same as when we were there last year. However, the ferry/barge pick up point has been at Shelter Bay for years - and I had a feeling you were using EOTopo 2023 maps which show the correct location of the barge pick up at Shelter Bay? I'm aware that Google and other maps haven't updated this. Kieran told us that the reason for moving it was because it is safer/easier in rougher weather than the old spot. But been there for ages and he was so happy that we were able to update our maps so I just want to find out if you were using ours or not? Are you keeping the rest of the island for another video?

Yes indeed, it’s one of my favourite places in Australia that’s for sure. We were (and are) using Etopo 2023 and were at the landing point marked on the map. The reason Kieran had to move it up the bay a few hundred meters was that there was a 30 knot wind working against him and he only had one engine on the barge as the second engine had a gut full of water. When we went back to the mainland several days later, the winds had died down and he got the second engine repaired so he could use the normal landing that is marked on your map. I release content every Friday at 3:00pm AEST and the next video continues to highlight the Island, and it gets even better!. You have a great product, 2023 is streets ahead of the prior version, love it. Cheers👍😎

@@JafffaAdventuresThanks very much for sharing your method. I have used Google map and Travel boast app. When it comes to off-road trips, that doesn’t work well. I have Hema app on tablet and phone. I will give it a try. Again thanks for your help.

Awesome videos. Can you please confirm how much fuel you used? I’m doing the same trip in Easter 2024 (including Steep Point). Just wondering how many jerry cans to take. Thanks

  • @JafffaAdventures

Thanks for the kind words mate. Sorry, I can’t tell you how much fuel I used as I did not track it. I have a long range tank, that coupled with the 90 main tank gives me 280 litres in total. I drove from Denham to Steep point, all around the peninsula, then over to Dirk Hartog for 4 days, then back to Denham with fuel to spare. That’s the bonus with LR tanks, you don’t really have to worry about it unless you are doing massive remote k’s like the Canning (which we did on this trip and will be featured in the near future). Have an amazing trip mate, you will love it😎👍

Hey, just viewed your latest video. You really explored every bit of the island which is great. If you’re not sure about your fuel consumption, do you have any idea how many km’s you covered from Denham, steep point, DHI and back to your next fuel stop?
