Directors WIZ and Chloe Raunet on I Am Weekender, a doc about Flowered Up's iconic film | BFI Q&A

Фильм және анимация

The directors of I Am Weekender, a celebration of Flowered Up's iconic 13-minute rave music video, visit the BFI Southbank to talk about their film.
Fuelled by Flowered Up’s epic soundtrack, WIZ’s Weekender was a film ahead of its time. A journey into 1990s club and drug culture, it received an 18 certificate and was banned on mainstream TV. Since then, the film has gained genuine cult status. Now fully restored from the original negative, this tangible document of the British rave scene is coupled with Chloé Raunet’s feature-length documentary about the making of the film and its enduring impact, offering a unique insight into the heart of acid house.

For a real insight into Flowered up watch a recent interview with the legend that is Barry Mooncult . Excellent stories of touring with the band . It was mental , I know as i was the bands roadie on a trip to Germany (eventful from start to finish) a rough trade tour to promote an album called Rave On. I also was on the Full Petal Racket tour ( so many stories from that one ) , this was before the album was even recorded , Its On was out as a single just about i think . I was 17 years old at the time , it was a baptism of fire to touring . Been on many others since but nothing compares to how wild those times were . I am forever grateful to Terry McQuade and Des Penny for giving me , someone who had little experience at the time a job like that . Not that it felt like work at all . I'll never forget the last gig of that tour at the Underworld in Camden . It was a Heavenly night . With Andy Weatherall DJ'ing , East Village , Manic street preachers , St Etienne and Flowered up . Before the band played i remember Barry Mooncult running into the dressing room which was packed with all sorts going on pulling out a gun (blank firing as it turned out ) and firing it off a few times ! We all hit the floor , Barry was laughing hysterically a few seconds later the underworld security team ran in shouting and screaming after hearing the gunshots , they were promptly told where to go and everybody could not stop laughing. The gig was mental , the stage as per every gig was invaded with dancing fans . What a top night. Flowered Up were on top of the world right then and had it in their hands . Such a brilliant live band that we will never see the like of again . They'd be "cancelled" in our current culture for just having a good laugh . Amazing times . RIP Liam and Joe . They are fully deserving of Legendary status . Have it up boys !

Wow - where can I watch the interview with Barry? I was a huge fan of the band and read Barry's blog while it was being updated, but nothing for a while!

Mine arrived today. can't wait to watch it. Having come through the 90s rave scene in the UK and specifically London and since been chasing that 90s feeling as an events organiser, this really is as close as you could get to it without actually partaking ;) I actually have the original 12 inch vinyl release too and the VHS version :D Brings back so many amazing memories and it was so good to see Trade mentioned in the booklet that came with the disc. Would have loved to have been at this event too. I was so happy when this was announced. Well done to all involved. I'm going to enjoy showing this to fellow ex ravers who knew nothing about this back in the day. :)

Nish is a four minute short by Wiz. It was shot before Flowered Up had formed though a subconscious seed was definitely at work. It is a visual piece documenting the essence of Acidhouse and I'd be surprised if each one of the people in it weren't at one of, or both of FU'S first two gigs. Nish (also a slang term for nothing) certainly isn't nish. It really is something 😊
