The "set" is actually a bar in Brighton, (Bar Valentino) and they only had a few hours to shoot. They had to be out by 3:00 pm as the bar was opening at 5:00 pm. All in all this video went from a germ of an idea from Ren - to the finished product in just eleven days, and during the Xmas break. Kudos to Ren and his small team. Ren released a BTS of the video on his Patreon channel. A standout scene in the BTS, is Ren sitting on a couch rehearsing his lyrics - with a drip attached to his arm. He is still receiving almost daily treatment to restore his damaged immune system, all while producing this quality music. The man is a legend.. Nice reaction sir.

The BTS on this was incredible! I also appreciate how flawless the blend was with the back up singers! It’s crazy that their first rehearsal together was only 2 days before the video shoot! And he pulled them forward in the post-production mix. It sounds so lush and his voice keeps getting better.

I was honestly just trying to think... Other than Money Game 3, which was shot in a warehouse (and looks like a warehouse) but they were able to dress as a set, has Ren ever shot a video on a set? Or has it all been someone-tied-up-on-a-chair-in-a-carpark or we're-putting-a-hospital-bed-in-a-bike-storage-room or we're-going-fight-real-addicts-in-an-abandoned-mall? Like, genuinely, how many times HAVE the cops been called on Ren, to get to the point where they're now just like, "Oh, that's Ren, it's fine." 😂

@@icyravens other than MG3 the closest to a set I can think of was when he took over his friend’s flat for Animal Flow … I’m sure the neighbors were very confused and maybe a bit terrified 😹 Ren and his creative team demonstrate over and over how you don’t need massive budgets to film and produce fantastic videos.

@@GarnetJTrue! They had permission for the flat and they dressed that space, but I'd personally still call Animal Flow guerilla filming (no homophones intended) because they stole a bunch of plants and took over the whole building to film a wackadoodle Kubrick fever dream. 🤣 As an aside, do I remember correctly that Animal Flow was the same building as Violet's Tale?

When Ren does these retakes / mashups, he doesn’t make any money on them, since he doesn’t own the licensing. But I think he does it for a few reasons - to pay tribute to artists and music that inspires him, to challenge himself, and to showcase his broad range. The other two recent releases are also incredible and stylistically very different. He did a Nas “Halftime” retake paying tribute to a hip hop great. And he also did a mashup of 5 Fred again EDM songs, but performed just him singing with an acoustic guitar and a ton of emotion. The filming of that one was beautiful! Someone referred to Ren as a “Welsh Army Knife” - he can do virtually any style and he’s always keeping it fresh and unexpected.

And the reason I think he’s so good at so many things is because he talks about growing up in a tiny village where he couldn’t find any collaborators so he had to do each part himself. By the time he was in England his skills were such that he recognized & chose other talented people to work with to create his visions. If he had gone on from there I think he’d be considered a very good musician and probably would’ve been a hitmaker for Sony, but honestly it would’ve limited him as far as style. I think him getting sick gave him the impetus to finally put his own heart & deepest soul into the mix. That’s what appeals to people of all ages around the world. It wasn’t until he performed a piece about his worst nightmares that the internet took notice. I love that so many people drop what they are doing on Thursdays to see his newest offerings. It makes it a shared event that brings even more community each time he tackles another thing. 💜

  • @eryksun

Note that Ren wasn't busking much in Brighton as a teenager because he didn't live there. He started busking while at university in Bath, in southwest England, starting when he was about 18-19 (2008-2009). In late winter 2013, just before he turned 23, he moved to Brighton, a seaside city in southern England. He did some busking and gigs occasionally in 2013-2016, but not full time on account of his autoimmune illness. In spring 2017, about a year after his first stem cell treatment, he got back into performing gigs and busking full time.

Have seen him at home practicing this with an I V in his arm and a nurse nearby. Repetition cements it in his mind, so nailing the words are his last concern. He can be aware of the performance and blending of voices. He's a pro and he directs all these. Don't know how many takes it was but Samuel Perry-Falvey was the photographer again. The entire song was conceived written and performed over 10 days when he was home for Christmas.

Interesting that you mention how when busking, a singer needs to grab the audience as they're walking by an pull them in. In interviews Ren has mentioned that he loves the psychology of holding an audience when busking. He has said that in a paid concert, people generally won't walk away if they don't like a particular song, because they've bought the ticket; but in busking you need to keep their attention. So, yeah, I guess he agrees with you on that. Thanks. Ren fan here, I've watched hundreds of reactions to Ren's music over the last 15 months. Love your Ren reactions, new subscriber here.

Not too many people can guess what Rains is gonna put out unless it’s like his most recent song halftime Nas retake. OK well you can figure that one is gonna be wrap, but right here is a masterpiece put together to go along with all other masterpieces artist out there right now. All the videos are one shot I think, except for money came three, which was two shots so yes we realize. There is only my second review of yours I’ve seen I saw you do the Jenny and screech, which is obviously an amazing piece of art and of itself but he’s got a lot of songs a lot of awesome videos. I don’t know how far down the rabbit hole you gone, but believe me when I say, he’s the best artist out there today, and if you watch all the stuff even stuff with his band, the big push his stuff which chinchilla his song with Sam is that his world his Nas retake that he just made as attribute to Nas cause he’s one of the best rappers ever and he still still alivehis level of guitar and his level of piano were off the charts he’s a musical salon you know another prince Michael Jackson, something like that. Can you say sting influence? Have you done the money game trilogy? If you have, I gotta watch your breakdown of it I gotta look after this. Have you watched his friend again mashup? If you haven’t you gotta watch that next and do the money game, but the Fred again mashup is club musicthat he mixed up four or five of his favorite DJ songs and made his own. It’s filthy. And there is footage out there of the making of this I think when he went home and stopped his treatments. He said he did it in nine or 10 days and I’m not sure if his Instagram I think it is Instagram I think the name is not Ren but it’s the behind-the-scenes people that film it and it shows him practicing and stuff it’s crazy. Have that much talent love music that much have that kind of work ethic, this is what you get. Michael Jordan of music!

Really enjoyed this. I wanted to piggyback off of your busking comments. Consider performers on Broadway or the West End. Not only do they need to perform consistently (8x/week), but they also have to find a way to keep each performance fresh. Health not withstanding, I think Ren is perfectly suited for these stages, should he have any desire. Also, Ren, at the very least, began pursuing music at a university level in Bath, England. I can not remember if he graduated or if his illness interrupted his studies. My point is that he took and takes music seriously as a whole, with the [obvious] intention of properly knowing his craft. IMNSHO, it's not so much that he's a great rapper or an awesome singer/songwriter/ bard; he's a talented, well-founded musician who puts in the hours and the passion, not to mention an enormous respect for at least one of the things that has kept him motivated over the years and very likely contributed to saving his life! God, that got deep in a hurry 😊! I'm not fan-boying. You are!

I'm not clear if he dropped out of uni before or after being signed to the Sony contract, but his health deteriorated so drastically over that next year that he couldn't complete either -- he moved back to Wales to live with his mother for a few years whilst trying to figure out what was wrong with him. Eventually he moved to Brighton in 2013, busked when he felt well enough to, and got his first stem cell treatment in 2016. Rejuvenated, he busked as often as he could around Brighton on his own, and with The Big Push, and with collaborators like Sam Tompkins, Chinchilla, Liv Sangster, and many others.

@@serendipitish Somebody mentioned he studied commercial music, and I'm not sure he completed the first semester before he got to sick and had to drop.
