That's why I say, never take directions from a local. You're better off with someone that is relatively new to the city. Once you're lived in a place too long (myself included) you stop remembering vital information like signs and street names and your brain converts to landmarks noone else seriously considers.

beg to differ i with you on that *+Always Learnin' * at-least to my own place or wherever i've lived or even to an eatery near workplace, say meeting a friend for lunch i'd always be fairly good at giving piecemeal directions with sometimes even foot/steps count and specific land, arks (easily visible/ identifiable) so has been with my Paa and few others. Maa not so much.

In the U.S., you're better just taking down the address and trusting your GPS. In some countries, you're better off abandoning all hope.

*+EebstertheGreat* haha ha.. that last part cracked me up. for it can be true sometimes (and thus, really frustrating) although here in Bharat en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhārat_Gaṇarājya (and few other places that i've been) it usually works out fine to just roll down the window (if in a vehicle) and ask local people or my favourite: walk up to any mom 'nd pop grocery store or pharmacy or milk distribution/ laundry shops centre guys and take door specific or at-least building location.. to the T. [in Bharat, often small or even medium sized grocery shops, medicines shops or ironing (laundry) guys often provide home delivery.] works best for congested areas. and even otherwise, GPS doesn't work that well for towns or areas that aren't mapped well. The '..abandoning all hope..' part made me guffaw because 8/10 times, if (ever) there are 4-5 people standing/sitting around and someone asks for directions, the groups give almost as many (often conflicting) answers!

As a teenager, I worked harvesting crops. I had to ask for directions to a farm - “go to the end of the road, turn right, and you’ll know his place when the grass looks better”. What’s worse is that I tried to look for ‘better’ grass.

Never ask directions in the country. Me: "How do I get to Highway 30 from here?" Man cutting grass: "Well... (scratches head), "I don't rightly know. Where you from? " (I tell him) Him: "Highway 30 won't take you there." Me: "I'm not trying to get home." Him: "Well you won't get there on Highway 30." Me: "I'm trying to find Johnson's farm, he said it was before you get to Highway 30." Him: "I don't know any Johnson 'round here" Me: "I met him at the cattle auction, and I'm going to buy some calves from him." Him: " Johnson ain't got no calves." Me: "I thought you said he didn't live around here?" Him: " He lives across the county line." Me: "Which way is the county line?" Him: "Bout a half a mile down from the turnoff on Highway 30." Me: "And where's the turnoff?" Him: "Down at the end of this here road." This really happened, about thirty years ago.

Yea, me and my dad had the same thing. Someone was looking for a local petting farm to take his kids to. Now, while we both knew where this petting farm was, we didn't know how to explain it to him in a way he would understand. I turned to my dad and said: 'You know the place too. It's right next to where the old tennis center used to be. Just a bit off by the creek, right before you get to where they pulled that car out of the creek 2 years ago.' From the look on my dad's face, I could see that he immediately knew what I was talking about, but obviously none of that information is useful to a tourist. We ended up directing the poor guy downtown, so he could pick up a map at the town hall.

@@Xylarxcode What I never understand is people giving "country" directions to a place which has an address I could just look up. Like, we're both sitting here with a phone in hand, just tell me how to look it up and GPS will take it from there!

It's when locals say it's the roundabout before the turnoff to... that really gets me. How do you know it's the one before until you go right past it and have to double back on yourself.
i'm glad he didn't encounter any left angles, that would have been disasterous.
'Y'ello'. Says it all.
I feel like if I was this guy, I'd have given up with life and moved into the mountains already.
Oh the beauty of “share my location”
TFW he's referring to the "Abbit" junction on the Main Rd. where "Thaet st." crosses, which changes into the "Keindoff-Leftische st." at the local bus depot, "Olewaysgle".

That guy is an amateur on evil directions. In Saint Louis, we normally give directions like "Head west down Watson to the road just before where Red Bird Lanes used to be and turn right, go up to where the gas station was and turn left, you can't miss it." Near as I can figure, we don't like outsiders around here, so we give directions based on where things used to be.

thank god for google maps!
"Walk down the main road for a bit, then up the street that goes high and leftish, it's where the bus is always go, then turn up the roundabout and you'll soon be at my place." I love this line due to how it's almost made as vague as possible. Which one is the main road? Do I turn left or right? How do I know if the road is high -leftish enough? Are there really going to be enough buses for me to know? I assume that road must be crowded with buses if you were to give it as part of the instructions. Then where do I turn it around about? It's a roundabout, so it's not off the tables that I might even want to go straight on it. But do I turn left or right? Or do I go straight? And then I'll soon be at your place? What does your house look like?

I was tempted to make a smart-ass comment about using google maps, but lately I’ve noticed it says stuff like “turn right just past McDonalds and your destination will be around the corner”... so, not much better that what you had here. Keep up the good work.
This is my boss explaining where I'm supposed to deliver stuff. I've started interrupting him and just telling him to give me the address instead.
Hahaha, YASSSS
I used to live in the rural countryside of the U.S. You often heard directions such as, "Go to where the old church used to be, turn right. Then just past where farmer Bob's cow was struck by lightning make a left. " My grandmother called the highway the "hard road." She once told me to "go out yonder and do that thing." So I went to my brothers house and built a really nice set of horseshoe pits.
