Direct Conversion Radio Receiver Using the MC1496 Double Balanced Modulator Demodulator IC
Briefly narrates the different characteristics of the MC1496 double balanced modulator demodulator IC and about its use as a product detector in a direct conversion receiver. This is an IC widely used in balanced modulator applications in amateur radio transceivers as well as mixer and product detector applications in radio and communication receivers. It has good modulator, demodulator and mixer characteristics. Due to being an active device, RF signal input must be adjusted for the required level to limit overloading, inter-modulation distortion, and other abnormal signal mixing characteristics. It has good sensitivity to weak signals when used as a radio mixer. Also demonstrates the construction of a direct conversion receiver using the MC1496 IC.

Good! That arrangement seemed to work finely. Connections of the boards together with your self-made soldering points is interesting. Well, it served the purpose for testing the direct conversion receiver.

Thank you for your video. Making a simple direct conversion receiver in order to listen the broadcasts on a CW, LSB, USB and AM mode in the shortwaves. I would like to see what other units you did connect the MC1496 double balanced modulator unit on this video in order to complete the receiver. Good!

I added a 1) Receiver bandpass filter to selectively tune to the radio frequency band that you are receiving from the antenna. 2) An RF amplifier to amplify the weak radio frequency signals. 3) A VFO that generates a local oscillator signal to beat with the incoming RF signal. 4) An audio filter to filter the RF signals from the audio signal and 5) an audio amplifier to amplify the audio signals.
