Hi there, Maggie. Please, please do another video for us of the Alchemy live version. At over 10 minutes it is is almost twice as long as the original studio version of 5 minutes or so. This version is very restrained compared to the live performance, in which the final solo seems to go on forever. And check out the drummer too, who is going off, I think the expression is. Plus of course, you get the magic of a live performance! Love from the south coast of England.

Every Dire Straits song is a duet between Mark and his guitar... you have to think of the vocals as call-and-response with the guitar fills. Great lyrics, incomparable guitar playing, and just enough vocal skill to put it all together.

Mark Knopler has a knack for that Dylan-esque storytelling in a lot of Dire Straits songs. Romeo and Juliet is one of Dire Straits' best, and worthy of anything Dylan ever did. Knopfler was an English teacher before getting into Dire Straits. Which figures, as his lyrics flow like someone who understands how to use the written word to good effect.

Maggie, you do realize that there are x amount of notes in any scale that is appropriate for improvising to the key of the song in question, and it's how you put them together rhythmically, melodically, and creatively which makes it either a hit or miss scenario. Trust me there's no plagiarism here, just pure talent. It's allowable to let your heroes loose in your compositions, although I really don't think that's the case here. Just relax and enjoy another guitar/songwriter legend..

I think what you are hearing in the melody is the 'call and response' style of guitar playing. In blues guitar playing it is a common way to practice phrasing, you play a lick( a call) then another guitar plays a lick in reply ( response).

When this song came out in the '70s I said to a friend, " I think that Dylan finally got a great band". You are hearing things that don't really exist when you make your comparisons to other songs from other bands. There are many common chord progressions in rock/blues/jazz, and a lot of plagiarism suits as well, which almost always lose. Now Sting literally does lift phrases out of classical music, from Prokofiev's Lt. Kije Suite for example, but as they say, good artists borrow, great artists steal;)

The song came out at the end of the 70s with Disco dying, acid rock a memory, folk music in the far corner and the more scripted for radio music of the 80s. Everything changes, so I mustn't complain. This song was quite popular on the radio then.

People much prefer the Alchemy Live version because it has another level of energy in it. Mostly because they changed drummers after the studio version and Terry Williams absolutely beats up a storm live rather than the much more sedate style of the previous drummer. Well worth playing that version and focussing on that drummer. Also the live version sound engineer did a magnificent job of balancing a live event - including the crowd handclapping. Go see.

Most people will look at the sheet music and think in terms of 2/4 or 4/4 or 6/8 (etc...etc...) at 16th note intervals. To master the speak singing thing it feels like you have to be thinking about 128th notes pr even finer....

Chris Rea!? That's an impressively deep cut for a gen-zedder! Rea is most famous scion of the North-East English coastal town of Middlesbrough since the intrepid explorer, mariner and navigator, Captain James Cook, met his violent end in Hawaii in 1779, while engaged in the sort of shenanigans for which, nowadays, colonialism is quite properly reviled. By contrast, the furthest Chris Rea went with his colonialist ventures was an appearance on the David Letterman Show. He refused to tour the US, basically 'cos he couldn't be arsed with all the bother - typical of a Teesider, that is - although he now regrets he didn't try harder, mainly because of the money. On the positive side, his has not had his life endangered in skirmishes with indigenous tribespeople, or even just a random crazy white Republican going off on one with his semi-automatic. However, Rea has earned a nickname of "the survivor" from his fans, having recovered from any number of potentially life-threatening illnesses, including pancreatic cancer. Whereas Captain Cook had pretty good health I think, apart from a spot of Scurvy, and other such sailors ailments, common in the day. So you just never know, do you? Now 71, Rea still lives with his partner, Joan, with whom he has been in a relationship since 1968. That's 54 years. They met when they were 17! Mind, you have to wonder if they'd have stayed together if he had pursued more of a career in the States? Is it any wonder the US divorce rate is what it is, when there are so many lawyers doing Family work? You just have to look at what happened to the Beatles.

The album that Mark Knopfler (guitarist of Dire Straits) and Emmylou Harris did together, All the Road running, is just killer.

As for Mark's singing/speaking - I remember reading an article about guitarists that are not the most impressive singers, but still are great guitarists/musicians, BUT it was because they did attempt to sing. Mark Knopfler, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Hendrix (for example) are/were amazing guitarists, now we also like their singing, but it's not like their singing is something we're going to remember them by. And some of those guitarists started singing to gain more recognition to their names, because people usually recognize singer, not other musicians. So they started singing to put themselves more in the spotlights. Well, I guess it worked ;)

🥰 I love your reaction to Dire Straits , Sultans of Swing. They have a good rift at good story. Have you reacted to George Thorogood, Bad to the Bone or One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer. He tells a pretty good story on both songs.🥰 Thank you.

I first heard this song on a jukebox in a restaurant [kind of a truck stop style] and I fell in love with it. It just speaks to me somehow that is hard to explain. I don't know why this song would make me think of it, but have you ever heard R.E.M. Losing my Religion [which, btw, if you don't know, is a Southern expression meaning that you are very upset and about to lose your temper ... although the song seems very 'controlled' and calm]

Interesting that you should say that this song reminds you of other songs. I think most of the songs you've mentioned were after this song was released (even the Eric Clapton Unplugged album). Given the blues nature of the song, there are a limited number of chords that work well in blues, so some progressions are going to be repeated. Something that this might remind you of is the soundtrack for The Princess Bride, since Marc Knoppfler wrote and performed that, as well. Remember this song well from my youth (late junior high/early high school).

This is so interesting. It's obvious you're a singer, because all the comments you made were about Mark Knopfler's delivery of the vocals. Great, but there is the small side issue of the fact that he's recognised as one of the greatest pop/blues guitar players of all time! Not one mention of the guitar playing. As I said, it's obvious you're a singer!

Knopfler is one of the all time greats. The Alchemy Live version of this song is amazing, and you can find it on KZread. I would put Knopfler in a similar category as SRV, Clapton, Page, BB King. He's one of the rarified few who can "make that guitar sing, thank you very much". His guitar can tell the story without verse to the song. Listen to songs like Romeo & Juliet, Once Upon a Time in the West, Money for Nothing. You'll hear it. He's also a great innovator, with a distinct "fingerpickin" style. No guitar picks on this song. It creates a unique sound.
