Yes this is a great live version also the live version of Tunnel of Love is brilliant Knopflers guitar work is very moving and beautiful.

This whole album, "Love Over Gold" is great, only 5 songs most too long for classic radio play, so only true fans that bought the physical album knew how good it was. The intro to some songs were longer than whole songs from bands just trying for a single for the air. This is a real headphone record.

On Every Street Album was the pinnacle of Dire Straights .. Planet of New Orleans

Absolute classic, and my favorite Dire Straits track out of many. I don't think there is a note or an instrument or a musical idea out of place. The story itself is compelling. For me though, the most brilliant part of the song is the interplay of Pick Withers' galloping drums and Knopfler's blistering guitar work at the end of the song. The thing brings me to tears.

Mark Knopler's Local Hero Soundtrack is a Miraculous work of Art.

Hi again, this is such an amazing track. I need to hear it again ...on headphones with my eyes closed. I cry everytime in the final minutes.The album is brilliant ! Bob Dylan famously went to watch Dire Straits live when they first began. He was so overwhelmed he went up onto the stage and hugged Mark....Later Mark was featured on Bob Dylans album "Slow Train Coming". I have mentioned also, Mark is on Phil Lynott's solo album "Solo in Soho". This track, the volume rises & falls numerous times, just like on a movie soundtrack. Their studio albums are absolute classics. Checkout "Private Investigations" from this same album....Now there is an atmospheric track. This was an unexpected treat. Loved it. Thankyou ! Byee Jim

The story of Detroit, in particular, and other American cities, in general.

Really pleased to be able to show this one to you. Beautifully written, great guitar playing, and the piano is just gorgeous. Just dripping with drama and desperation. I agree with the commenters who suggested you check out or go back to the album "Making Movies", which is really good from the first track to the last.

The whole LOG album is a treat. “Private Investigations” is an experience. I’m particularly enamored with the solo outro on “It Never Rains,” a hidden gem of Mark’s “angrier” side. Give “Making Movies” another listen, especially the first three tracks. Beautiful musicianship, lyrics. Same with “Brothers In Arms.” Sure, “Money for Nothing” gets most of the attention due to MTV, but the whole album is a masterpiece. The second side has an “anti-war” theme, starting with “Ride Across The River” (phenomenal!) finishing with the title track, which you MUST hear in its entirety (the official video is shortened). Their last studio album “On Every Street” didn’t live up to the success of BIA, but is still a good listen. Standout tracks include “Calling Elvis” (Toto’s Jeff Porcaro on drums), “You & Your Friend” and “Planet of New Orleans.” Once you’re caught up on DS, there’s Mark’s solo albums… nine, with a tenth album currently in the works. Plus another bunch of movie soundtrack albums, including “The Princess Bride.” The album “Screenplaying” is a compilation from four movies he’s composed for. Last, but not least: “Neck and Neck,” with Mark and the late great Chet Atkins. Masterful x2. Alchemy Live… can’t forget that! I wish iTunes had it. :(

Agree. A lot of the solo albums are fairly redundant with each other, but they're all enjoyable. Neck & Neck is such a fun record to pull out every now and again :)

Yes, “Screenplaying” is brilliant, and I especially love the theme from Local Hero, which makes you cry in the context of the movie. Totally agree about “It Never Rains!”

One of the most atmospheric and incisive guitar solos ever! The whole song is atmospheric and bang in tune with the message, There is a track on the same album named Private Investigations, I think Mark Knopfler's voice matches the character in that song. See if I am wrong.

Crown jewel of DS' crown jewel album, the " Love Over Gold " album is almost a prog rock album..." Private Investigations ", the next song on the album is just as fantastic as " Telegraph Road " Remember: MK's voice is the narrator, MK's guitar is the singer

Yeah the boy can play... :) Love his style too, and there's so much more in his solo work too beyond DS. :) Private Investigations off the same album is well worth a listen. :) Like Gilmour he knows time and space and to let things go, understatement, room, it grows...

Dire Straits were such a breath of fresh air in the late seventies, early eighties. Most punk and new wave were not my cup of Tea at the time (except for Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, or The Clash, among others).

Cinematic! Always the right note and he never overplays. His sound seems to come directly from his heart. That ever present melancholy giving voice to the northeast of England. The thorn in my soul recognizes the thorn in his. Just beautiful.

Telegraph Road is one of the all-time great recordings. So much depth. The dynamic range and use of space on this record is a marvel.

In 1982 the compact disc player appeared in my town This year also brought 2 albums made to demonstrate the new technology Avalon by Roxy Music & Love Over Gold by Dire Straits Just magical memories of hanging out at the Hi-Fi store to these sounds, I was 14 & it would be 5 years before I had my own stereo. In the meantime there was my boom box & cassettes & FM radio

You really need to watch Dire Straits perform live Sultans of Swing[Alchemy tour] one of the best live performances you will ever see.

Good choice, on this one all the band shines, love the dynamics of the recording (this was done before loudness war). the lyrics and the story telling is fantastic too.

This may be the most impressive thing Dire Straits ever did. Which is saying something.

I agree with you. When you have a virtuoso in your studio like Mark Knopfler, and you don't take advantage of it, it's a sad day in rock n roll. Strange, with how much insanely complex, emotional and beautiful music Mark created, he doesn't read music. I don't know how he got the sounds and ideas across to the other musicians, but he certainly did. However, that's not how the Dan operates. They not only use strict time signatures and written music, they have very precise rhythm charts that their usual players follow to the letter. The fact that their styles are quite different was never communicated ahead of time. Odd. I do like what Mark laid down, as economical as it is.

I remember when this album came out. As soon as it hit the turntable, I knew I was in good hands and the name of the album was perfect. It was an amazing experience listening to it for the first time and totally falling in love with it.

Dire Straits definitely has a distinctive sound and Mark Knopfler contributes greatly towards the Springsteen like effect with his guitar playing.The whole sound reminds me of a sort of 50s rock ‘n’ roll composition but this case without the saxophone or glockenspiel in Springsteen music arrangements. The piano and the guitar shine through, and the vocals are a spoken Springsteen-esque style. His guitar picking reminds me of early Clapton but in an almost banjo picking or resonator style.

Worth checking out Live Alchemy versions of Sultans of Swing, Telegraph Road and Once Upon a Time in the West

My favorite Dire Straits song. I remember when i was younger and still tried to play guitar i often played to this and "Dogs" from Pink Floyd in a row since they both have just so great guitar parts. Also of course as a big fan of prog/symphonic rock, this is Dire Straits most symphonic like piece they ever did i think.

I cried when I heard this album first time. The A-side is flawless.The musicianship, the dynamics.. its ridiculous..

This version is like listening to Telegraph Road under water. Alchemy Live is where it’s at.

Nick you really need to listen to "tunnel of love" from "makin' movies" album from 1980, another epic, it's special!! 😊

I've a story to tell about this album, this tour. But it's too bittersweet for tonight. I'll maybe tell it on a less stressed out day.

In my humble opinion…this is Mark’s very finest work and I love all of his music.

You do have to get to the '83 live album Alchemy. No overdubs, all recorded on one night and totally brilliant with Terry Williams on drums and Alan Clark on keyboards. It will blow you away. Also don't over look (to date) Marks 9 solo albums.

My fave Dire Straits album absolutely

Never a bad track from Dire Straits. Mark has also written score music for movies. One that comes to mind is Local Hero.

My favourite DS song, from my favourite DS album. The whole album is fabulous. The live version on "Alchemy" is beyond fabulous - one of the best live tracks by anyone ever, IMO. Nick, please check that out if you can!

My favorite DS track from my favorite DS album. Alchemy Live is legendary, and there are many worthy tracks from the other albums, but Love Over Gold is where they captured that once in a lifetime lightning in a bottle that cracks the list of best albums of all time. In my humble opinion :-).

Stopped buying their albums after Making Movies which was their 3rd album. So this is a treat!

Love Over Gold is Dire Strait’s most underrated album, with only five songs but they stretch out on all of them to an unusual length, especially with this song. My favorite on this album is the last song, “It Never Rains,” which just builds and builds until it reaches majesty. But I think their best album is Making Movies, where nearly every song is backed by members of Springsteen’s E Street Band, and they’re all classics. Check that out next!

The genius of Knopfler...instrumentally perfect. The pianist sounds classically trained.

I guess I'm one of the few that likes Communiqué better than the first album. A lot better. Knopfler absolutely rules. Money for Nothing is with Sting.

Dire Straits finest moment - still gives me goose-bumps decades after first hearing it! I know you're a fan of Jethro Tull so try 'Farm on the Freeway' from their grammy award winning 'Crest of a Knave' album which they clearly took some inspiration from this track.

MK has so much emotion tied up in those beautiful notes. I really appreciate his solo work, which I recommend for your consideration Nick. The whole Love Over Gold album is worth a listen from start to finish. Enjoy!

On the whole, I like Mark Knopfler's guitar playing more than I like Dire Straits. He inspired me to learn to play with my fingers just because there are so many possibilities to explore with those techniques. Of course , there are folk and country players who take it to a whole other level. This is a fun one to jam over the chords. D minor, like most of my favourite Dire Straits songs. I think Tunnel of Love is even better.

Its unbelieveable to me ...as good as knopfler et al are ...the way the drums are miked....unbelievably well....never heard better???...dsotm, this and steely dan aja my desert island albums. Like who really comes up with this ...the tone... the beauty, the dirtiness.... the cleanliness ...track has it ALL!

I agree with you about the first album, it just hit hard! For me “Sultans” is an incredible song, but I think it’s maybe the 4th best song on the album! Telegraph Road is fantastic!!!

This song was the reason why I bought the Love Over Gold album. First time I heard it, I had to get the album. The only version that matched, or perhaps in places exceeded this version, would be the Alchemy Live version. This was also an album, obviously a Live album, taken during their Alchemy Tour, and most, if not all, are also videos.

Another vote for the live version. Some say the best work of music ever recorded thank goodness.

I was in high school when Love Over Gold came out. I bought it on cassette tape and immediately fell in love with them. It didn’t come out of my tape deck for at least six months and I listened to it every day. Telegraph road was my absolute favourite track. Brilliant stuff ❤

Nick, have you ever checked out the playing style of Wilko Johnson? Very unique finger strumming, kind of playing lead and rhythm at the same time with alternating up and down motion. He passed away recently. Look for anything by Dr. Feelgood - he wrote a lot of their original songs and was a quite menacing stage presence. Love over gold was the first CD I bought with my new CD player. Boxing day sale 1985.

A great song and album ! The build up and creating tension is so beautiful! The outro solo is class !

The "Love over Gold" album is my favorite Dire Straits album.

No album of them ever reached the magic of the first Dire Straits album. Not only that it was new, fresh, only has good songs, but also due to the fact, that I saw them live in June 79 right after Communique came out. They played open air in one of or even the most beautiful open air venues in Germany : The Lorely Amphitheatre in the hills right above river Rhine, every time I've been there I was enchanted by the sundown ... in connection with the music being played. So it was one of those magic nights, when Dire Straits entered the stage, starting with Down to the waterline, Six blade knife, Once upon the time in the west, Water of Love (we all felt the love in the air ❣😀) and Sultans of Swing. Simply epic and they even stole the show from Barclay James Harvest, back then really huge and famous in Germany ... (Narvik might be envious, unless he was there 😂) All the later albums had single great songs, just like telegraph road - which is IMO a little too long - and my alltime favourite besides the first album - the song Brothers in arms, a song for eternity.

Not a big Knopler fan, but it warms the cockles of my musical soul that someone who doesn't just try to write hits and creates such high quality music had been so very successful. Kudos, bro.

Nearly in the middle of the song (a piano part) you took a sip of your cup and I don't know why but it felt like that point in the song was made for exactly this: taking a sip of tea or a really good whiskey...just consuming a good drop of whatever to accompany an just as good piece of music. It was just a funny coincidence.

You should hear this live! I saw them many many times, including for the Alchemy show (where I went backstage afterwards and have a great photo 😂)

Hi Nick, I've just seen this.... Oh boy what a track !!! Everyone has their own cinematic experience .. my final scene is this very long deserted road, with only some old Telegraph Pylons that just stop halfway, then, a dirt track leading to the end of a cliff. Knopfler is on fire with this that gives me goosebumps everytime. This will be the 1st time I've played this in years with my eyes open. Just what will your reaction be ? My favorite Dire Straits tune as well. This album and the first are their best...hard to say which one is a favorite, they're very different. But I think the band's playing is at its best on this album. I disagree about the sound...I think the production is great, but everyone's ear is different. Thanks for the listen on this one...enjoyed it.

As has been said, you now should watch the Alchemy live version, it's incredible. After that listen to Tunnel of Love, but make sure you hear the studio version then the live version.

An Epic Masterpiece!

Love the "Dan" and your comment on Donalds obsession with perfection. It led to absolutely awesome music but Marks play by ear picking style is borderline perfection and so unique. Love it! Also liked your reference to "In the Gallery". One of my favorites. Please check out "INDUSTRIAL DISEASE" also off "Love Over Gold".

Love Over Gold is my second favorite Dire Straits Album, after Making Movies.

Great tune from master musicians! Walter was in the hospital at the time GAUCHO was being produced so the burden for the large majority of doing Gaucho.

Mark had Roy Bitten on the previous album so I guess he knows a bit about 'Springsteen Keys'.

The first five Dire Straits albums are an incredible run of music.

Tunnel of love and romeo and Juliet are must listens
