SMM1 Version: • Dire Strait
Though I have no plans to actually play SMM2, now that Nintendo has fully killed SMM1, I've decided that I'm willing to port some of my levels over to the lesser game by special request. This level was requested by JankPickle, known in SMM1 as LordPickleKing.
The level remains substantially the same, though some modifications were needed.
First and foremost, Nintendo's bizarre rules disallowing placement of anything in the spawn area prevent you from making any level that tightly encloses the player at the start. As a result, if you want to do that, you simply have to start the level with a door or a pipe, as shown. (Awful.)
Secondly, Nintendo radically expanded spike and muncher hitboxes. Things that were fun in SMM1 are now miserable in SMM2, or outright impossible. Though the SMM1 configuration of munchers and spikes remains possible to clear in SMM2, it's insanely precise and profoundly unfun. The point of the level was for the player to show sufficient moonswim mastery to be able to swim steadily, not to require frame perfect swimming.
In order to preserve that moderate level of difficulty, I used two rows of munchers in SMM2 instead of the one you will see in SMM1. The stacked munchers settle a bit, slightly increasing the amount of space between them and the spikes, more or less canceling out the expanded hitboxes.
