Dipped in Gristle with Greg Koch
Blues-rock guitarist and gearhead Greg Koch steps into Rhett and Zach's virtual studio to talk all things tone, including part of his personal amp journey-from solid-state to the Fender Super Reverb-the makeup of his current rig, and the power of the Strat middle pickup.

Apart from being a *stellar* musician, Greg's entire presence is so positive and fun. What a generous and friendly conversationalist. Loved this!
Whenever I see Greg in an interview I know I'll be happier after.
As a musician and music aficionado living in Milwaukee, it's great to see the rest of the world catch on to the magic of Greg Koch. Nothing better than him playing a show where he exhibits his mastery in all genres- absolutely mind boggling.
Great interview with Greg!
The Mark V is definitely my dream head in the 90w.
I've been dipped by Mr. Greg Koch! 29.9/30 - I'll take it! The reverb unit absolutely acts as another gain stage, much like an Echoplex or Space Echo. There's really nothing like it. Thanks guys!

Cheers man! Not only dipped by Greg, but also got a 10.0 from Rhett & Greg. Nice compact rig!
I’m getting nostalgic thinking about a time before KZread when nobody knew anything. Great interview
Greg is always a treat! And thanks for letting Zach talk more!
The word is confounding. Greg Koch is CONFOUNDING. 🎸❤🎸❤🎸❤
Im also reading ian gillans autobiography right now and there are some great stories in there.
Interesting conversation about loudness. I was at the Kock-Marshall trio gig last night and they completely rocked. It was LOUD! Even with earplugs. My ears were already a little fried from my Friday night gig, but my ears were still ringing a little after the show. Maybe 20 feet from the stage. I left my house and forgot earplugs and then circled back to get them. Don't get me wrong, it was a great show with stellar playing, but I wouldn't have enjoyed it without the plugs. The people sitting at the tables in front of me were visibly in pain. Its tough to get it right - as you still what the sound to project to the back of the club.
"Dua! FOREVER!" I actually chortled out loudly
For my first big concert I saw the Allman Brothers at the Congress Zentrum in Hamburg in the fall of 1980. Behind the stage Marshall 4x12s with JBLs were stacked up. No way those were fed by just one amp head. More like three for Dickey and three for Dan Toler.
I will watch any content with Greg as soon as I see it, no questions
Congratulations on the Sweetwater sponsorship! You guys have managed to build something really cool.
Great episode title! I lmao out loud when I read it.
Big Headstock Strat Talk gets me giddy! I've got an '09 American Special Stratocaster that I simply love, especially since I yanked the Texas Specials out for a set of Seymour Duncan mid scooped pickups.
Greg is 1 of the most fascinating & entertaining humans ever! This was amazing.
Rhett - I just bought the Mark V:25. You won’t regret any Mark series amp
Yo huge shoutout to Wildwood guitars. Went up to the old showroom with my dad all the time back in high school (10ish years ago now) - still have a Gibson-347 I bought there used with my summer camp counselor money. Glad to hear Greg mention Steve Mesple (the original curator of Wildwood), he was always really cool to me even as a clueless kid. I understand why the new showroom isn’t open to the public, but I really miss going in there. Steve remembers EVERYONE’S name, and it was great going in there to shoot the shit with him and Lance and Bruce.
Great interview. I've been fortunate enough to see Greg play since he was 16(probably 150 times). The progression has been impressive. I've been playing guitar for about 44 years. He is the best all around guitarist I've ever seen. There is no style he doesn't excel at. Gristle King!
Koch made this interview pop the man is just a brilliant and kind humble cool man. Honor and diplomacy hahahah!!! Greg Koch rules!!!! Brilliant guitarists and a legit comic hahahah!!!
Thanks for having Greg on! A true entertainer in every sense. I remember getting my T.C. electronics HOF pedal and not finding a reverb sound I liked until I found the Koch setting.
That was a fun episode! Great stories and good times had by all
Mr Buzzman’s rig is a solid 10. Love it. Very happy to see someone else using Way Huge pedals. I have a Saucy Box and I don’t think it’ll ever leave my board.
I have two Mesa amps, the California tweed and the blue angel. I feel like they are both non-Mesa Mesa amps that would be right up Rhett’s alley
Koch should join the podcast
Oh and Congrats on the Sweetwater thing! I'm an OTR truck driver and I make it a point to stop in any time I'm within 50mi of Ft Wayne! I love that place and they absolutely get a fair share of my annual income!!! I could set up camp in the "Used Room" and just live there!!! 😎
"If Peavey made a car, I'd drive it... If Peavey made a boat, I'd buy it..." - Rhett Shull. I'm using that!!! License plate I had in the 80s read "PV4EVER".
He is just a cool guy. I love it when older men can pull off cool. Of course it helps that he plays great guitar. When talented people are just nice people, they deserve to be acknowledged.
Thanks guys for such a great show. I genuinely look forward to every episode.
Ry Cooder Lipstick sunset solo is chilling on the Hiatt album.. a must listen. Had no idea it through Dumble. Thanks Greg.
Speaking about Fender amps... Back in the late 70s there was this little device that plugged into the reverb/trem footswitch jacks on Fender amps. I think they were called Ice Cubes. Couple those with Les Pauls or SGs with Dimarzio SD pups, and you had something going. Just around the time Boogies came out.
Hell yeah. Love Greg. I could listen to him play all day. And I could listen to him talk about playing and gear all day. He’s such a gift. Thanks guys. Excellent episode.
Love Greg. Seen him a few times around here. Didn’t realize he liked pro jrs. I love them. Have two. Kept one in the little box and stuffed another pj4 in a mojo tone larger cab with a Celestine blue 12 inches in there with the bell cover taken off to stuff it in there even with the bigger cab
Terrific episode, gents! It's always a treat to hear Greg do his thing, whether that's playing guitar or just sharing about his life and times. Bravo! 🔥❤👍
Phenomenal interview with great insights. Much respect always GK and team. 🙌🏼
Favorite dipped rig so far! Simple, refined, yet very versatile!
I have an Evil Twin and even with the original Fender speakers, it's a beast and the tone is gorgeous. It makes a killer bass amp in the studio too.
I meet Greg in La crosse, WI at Dave's before his gig. He's just as nice and goofy in person. I was about to plug when I saw him and the first words I said to him were "I don't think I want to play in front of you" 😅
53:40 I don't think I could ever go back to using a single amp. At least 2 but I really like three. Three is the magik number!
Greg is a god. Please come up north in uk. We love u. 🇬🇧❤️
I have a 1971 NMV Silverface Twin Reverb with NOS tubes and Weber Cali 12's. before the mods I paid $425 in like 2002. the amp was being used as a keyboard amp. lol
Saw Jimi in '68, Allmans 15 ft away center stage, and all the big groups... loudest ever was Johnny Winter in '70... my ears are still ringing!
Great stories, and great info about gear. Thanks guys, keep up the good work. You gotta love Greg.
Great episode. Greg's not only funny in person, but his playing invariably makes me smile. There's always little sonic trinkets that reward the careful listener.
So excited! I'm a big fan of Greg... wicked player, articulate teacher, and hilarious
Hi Rhett! ..I'm an older Rocker just down the road in NC. I really enjoyed the show...looking forward to many more.
Robin Trowers playing on the track No more worlds to conquer from his latest album, has made me cry a bunch of times. Such an amazing player with great touch and the ability to pass the emotion through his music.
If Rhett's gonna be in Europe soon maybe we can see a meet up with That Pedal Show?
Fantastic interview with Grey as well as a great rig that got dipped!
Great talk! That "Greg" amp has got to be one of the best sounding amps I've heard.
Re: Stage volume, concert sound in the old days. I started going to live shows in 1971. I saw the The WHo, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Queen, many of the classic bands. From what I remember, the sound for the audience at shows varied a lot. (It's much more consistent now) It depended on the band, and the venue mostly. The bands I listed above all sounded great the times I saw them. The Who carried their own P.A around with them, complete with elaborate monitors and side fill speakers, all by a company named WEM in the early 70s. They didn't trust the venues to provide top shelf P.A.'s that could handle their very high volume, and rightly so! This way they were in total control, and they had a GREAT live sound then. Zeppelin sounded terrific too. I remember hearing everything. The Fillmore East was a great concert hall that had a reputation for having a great PA and great sound. Thats why so many people recorded live albums there too. That Cream show Greg Koch mentioned was a bit notorius for its shitty sound. My best buddy went to that show and despite being a huge Cream fan, he thought the sound really sucked. And he was a kid, so it really must have sucked for a kid with no experience to notice. It was roll of the dice back then, but I think most people adapted pretty well, because that was the only game in town at the time. They found a balance between the loud guitar amps and the PA for drums and vocals. THey worked it out, from venue to venue, night by night.
Really loud was AC/DC on the For Those About To Rock tour!
Great video Rhett and Zach. Wonderful hearing from the awesome Greg Koch. Interesting you mentioned about Mesa's. I own a TA-30 and it's the best amp I've ever owned. It's so versatile.
Great interview. Greg is absolutely cool!!!
Several things - really enjoyed the interview with Greg Koch. Your Sweetwater show with your guest list is awesome. Regarding Sweetwater, I’ve bought several guitars from them and couldn’t be happier. My latest acquisition was a Gibson ES-335, not a cheap guitar. I chose a specific one based on the detailed photos the sales engineer sent me and the weight. When I received it I was blown away; the maple top had beautiful flame and it sounds awesome. The setup was great. Lastly, Zach, I bought a Mythos SusMaryOsep and love it. Keep up the great work you guys!
Greg is a phenomenal guitarist. Top on the guitar mountain.☝
So excited, we’re getting to see Koch Marshall Trio twice in New England!
I just learned about your cast. Thank you for doing it!
JBL stuff: D series were the originals, made with Alnico magnets; you COULD blow them with a high headroom amp (Orange OR100 or HiWatt D103). The E series had ceramic magnets and could handle more power. The final solution is K series, which were higher power but D-series alnico design.
Big Shoyles!! Great sessions fellows, regards to the Meister of Gristleaister. Reverence to the words of ye gods.
saw greg in dallas and it was killer tone.
Talking of the new Joey Two Rock, he brought it out when they were at my venue a little while ago, and good lord did that thing sound good!
You hit the nail on the proverbial head Rhett, Greg is a chameleon of guitar virtuosity. I can't imagine anything that he cannot play with convincing skill.
Engaging, knowledgeable personalities discussing stuff I find fascinating-that’ll do.
Great interview 🎸👍
Such a great episode. Greg is always an amazing guest on whatever type of media it is. A couple takeaways I had were- 1. Please stay strong Rhett. Tube screamers suck and everyone will try to change your mind. I’m with you 2. That was possibly one of the coolest rigs I’ve seen in a while. I’m incredibly jealous of it 3. 4 pro juniors is hilarious to visualize, but also just sounds like a super reverb with extra steps. (I fully support it) 4. I might have to make a 5 hour drive in February to see the trio play…
Greg is the man!
best episode ever
He’s a good man, and thorough
Entertaining and educational. What more could you ask for?!
Greg is always very entertaining and a ledge as a musician/guitarist .
Greg is a real treasure.
I went to see KMT this week in Phoenix and it was awesome!! Highly recommend going to see Greg Koch if he's in your area.
If Sweetwater doesn't currently have the model you're looking for, but they carry it, they can notify you when they get more.
I love those old JBLs.
That rig is sick!
The Gristle. THAT'S IT. Joe Bonamassa says that pound by pound he is simply the best guitar player on earth. I've been following you Rhett for a while on your regular channel and I've discovered your podcast and man. I really thank you for your amazing job. same for Zach. love you guys.
Saw The Allman Brothers play in Harvard Square- heard them on the other side of the river and followed the sound down Mass Ave. Loud it was but sounded great. Wasn’t as loud as John McLaughlin & Carlos Santana at Schaefer in the middle of Central Park. Heard them all the way home on 110th St. In Manhattan. Hendrix at MSG seemed quiet by comparison.
Subbed and Subscribed. Let get this going!!!
Ha, ha... I still have a Peavey silver stripe Bandit, in my room of gear. Cool show with Greg. Cheers from Mike in Sooke, BC, CAN
I could listen to Greg for hours. Isn’t he the most likeable, downright funny dude? Louder than the word of God 😂
Saw Greg at Peach Guitars in UK, one of the best guitar players I’ve seen and so funny
I like that Rhett found a way to wear two Madison Cunningham shirts in one podcast 😂
RHETT! When you're in Europe, please stop by That Pedal Show and have a go. I think it would be fun and you can show them your wet/dry rig and have a laugh or two. Do it!
I was big on Mesa amps 10 - 15 years ago. Don’t buy the Mark V !!! It does a lot of things kinda good but nothing really great. I sold mine after a year. Moved on to Suhr, Amplified Nation and Friedman amps. Much happier now. Cheers. 😎🎸👍
50:22 I'm not sure if they mention in the intro, but it seems like this was recorded before Jeff's passing. Poignant... I know from the TrueFire course that JB was a huge influence on Greg
Greg Koch should be a regular on this podcast
Just ordered a guitar from Wildwood an hour ago. :)
Check the back of the owners manual of a Mesa boogie. It will show numerous ways to modify the amp for some reason
G C is just the best. I was intimidated the first time I saw him and heard him play. Holy Cow he is so good. And then talks shit too… great interview guys…
Regarding "JBL vs. Celestions back in the day" IIRC (I'm 72) in the SF Bay area in California, the JBL speakers were more affordable and were considered to be better, more reliable speakers.
KZread just suggested this, what the heck these guys look like twins ha ha. Greg Koch is amazing.
God Greg is so damn cool, I love it!
I think I've bought three guitars now after playing them outside of Wildwood. Ya kinda have to do a weather check before you call to set up an appointment,
When do we get to see Dipped in Driftwood guitars? I think it would be awesome
Greg: loves oranges , Allergic to dogs. Man I love Greg dude is so funny.
i feel like rhett is gonna hate the mark v, I have a mark v 25 and its incredible but you need to know how to set them. I have high confidence for Rhett but I think it is going to take him some time to get use to it. I hope he does well! I love them and theres nothing like a mesa in my opinion.
Greg might be the only person on the planet that can get Rhett to belly laugh on camera.
